The more effort I put into cooking, the less they like it!

When you 'cook' like that, l can understand why.

.

A 1960's era, middle-to-late aged women's question: How many can openers have you worn out?

:worried:"Uhhh . . . maybe l should not have asked that."

The implication was/is she can't cook unless she can do everything from scratch. Crusts, breads, canning, and so on.

Truthfully, l know it is hard to please a family all the time.

I like to know what we are eating and most processed foods are garbage, but I don't mind taking shortcuts. The point is to eat, not to do extra work.

I would be happy to let any of the other three adults in the house cook, but they tell me my cooking is at least better than theirs. Should I let the children cook?

Yes, depending on how tall they are. lf they are too short to do stuff safely then the basic small jobs are all they should be allowed to do. And watch them with the hot stuff. Their hands may not be strong enough.

Like my father said, you -including boys- need to know to know how to do this stuff. l knew he knew how to cook and stuff. 0nce when mom was gone for some reason, we were cooking something to eat. Whatever l was doing, he said l was doing it the 'hard  way' and showed me how to do it. The only part l can remember is that l was using the cast iron skillet.

When l was about 11 or 12, my Dad came in the living room with his work vest and the sewing basket. Sat under the light and started putting a couple of buttons back on. So my dumb mom tried to make a laugh out of it. Then he said, "l need this tomorrow because of the pockets in it." Then she said an 'iffy' something about doing it and he answered, "l haven't got time to wait on you." She said something else about how unusual it was. Then he said -probably for my benefit- "You can't go through the Army or Life dragging your Mother along with you." -and l believe there was a 'doing all this for you.'

l also saw him scrub a couple of times.

So yes, teach those boys how to do stuff.

l remembered this a couple weeks ago. ln college, a girl came to our (all boys) table and sat down -because she knew a couple of the others- and said, "l am not being forward, but l got to get away from those girls (sorority sisters) for a while."  Then she explained when asked why.  Those girls couldn't do anything basic. Wash clothes without ruining them, clean messes up, wipe things off, and so on. As fuming as she was, she kept her rant in a low tone. And the thing l remembered is when she said, "l had to show two of them how to use a can opener." That is when l said, "You've got to be kidding me." As soon as she looked back at me l knew she was not. She elaborated by saying the one girl couldn't realize she was trying to open at one-of-those-cans that have a rounded end and to open it on the other end -then the gurl didn't know enough to squeeze the handles together. So she did it for her to show her.

My sister later made the same kinds of complaints when she was in college.

Yes, teach them how to do everything around a house.

0f course, you can only hope that the boys aren't like me. As my sisters said, "(He) knows how to do all that stuff. He just doesn't do it." And yes it is true, ever so often l scrape the crude loose on my stove and then vacuum it up.

Which reminds me. Since February l need a new bag for the vacuum cleaner. Keep forgetting to buy it.

@hasanhh my oldest son knows how to cook a few things, my second son is pretty competent but incredibly lazy. My nine year old daughter doesn't know how to cook anything more complex than pasta, and I don't know if she has the hand strength to use a can opener.

My six year old son is developmentally delayed and not ready to start cooking. He needs help to make his peanut butter sandwiches. His chore is to put away the silverware. The rest of the kids wash and put away the dishes each day and do other work as requested.

Reads like a normal schedule of development.

l can't off-hand remember when my sisters and l were allowed to do anything pertaining to the kitchen except silverware, napkins, set the table; but we were not allowed to touch the food or get anything out of the refrigerator for years.

Ate: my daughter requested macaroni and cheese for last night's supper. We had it with steamed broccoli.

Eating:

PXL-20210323-122459386.jpg

My husband dubbed this "pea-laf". I married him for his puns, you know.

Will eat: I'm thinking eggs and a homemade european style bread, and some fruit for tonight's supper, but might change my mind.

Yesterday I went with my dad to fix his car, this is the first time we go together to fix his car. I was happy. We went to a scam restaurant, they don’t have 80% of the menu. My father wanted to eat shawarma and I wanted to eat chicken burger, they said they don’t have them but instead they have FRESH beef burger. We both agreed to have it but then it turned out it’s not fresh at all, it with frozen from one popular brand in Middle East. The fries was old too and the soft drink was double the price. Definitely one of the worst restaurants I had in my whole life. $12 was wasted for nothing. Oh my god I don’t want to talk about the place where we sat to eat our food, I’m sure no one went to that place for more than a decade.

After few minutes my mother called me and said she and my siblings are hungry, so once we fixed and cleaned his car, we went to another restaurant and ordered 2 grilled chicken with fries and stuffed grape leaves, it was 10000% better than the first restaurant. My father paid almost $20 but they deserve it.

That was only for lunch, didn’t have dinner and breakfast.

Chicken enchilada lasagna.

Chiicken -Gallus gallus domesticus ; one of them thar "jungle foul"

enchilada -a rolled tor-til-la, made from maize. Rhymes with vanilla.

la-sag-na --wheat paste that makes a stomach sag

This recipe reminded me of a Get Smart line from the 1960s. Agent 99 informs Maxwell Smart that their suspect's parentage was a Mexican and the other ltaIian; to which Smart comments, "lmagine the heartburn."  [Both cusines are known for their over-spicy-ness.]

Now, for Friday, l baked a Gallus gallus pattie in cast iron. Made a sandwich with cheese and relish. A that, my dear, iz American cookin'. [From a quote a movie, but l forget whcih one.]

That all sounds good, except I rarely like sodas. A glass of water instead and this would be perfect.

I drink a lot of water, because of that I like to drink something else while eating.

We ate just macaroni and cheese with peas last night for supper.

Right now I'm having my usual morning coffee, and I had a few bites of leftover pilaf from five days ago that didn't taste fresh. Is cooked rice ok to throw out for birds and squirrels?

Will eat: planning to make a loaf of French bread today, and plan to serve it with simple salad and tuna. I'll need to go to the store for salad veggies, as the ones in my garden aren't near ready.

Anyone have any ideas what to do with several pounds of frozen corn? We don't really eat it as-is and I don't know any recipes, but I don't want to waste it either.

l had a use-it-up combo of noodles, spaghetti, tomatoes and such.

l had what l thought was a can of black beans in the refrigerator. Got it out, and it looked so dark brown as to be black. Look at the label and it was a can of fruit cocktail that went bad. So always read those old labels again.
