Good thread.

I am actually itching to get one for no apparent reason so I'd watch this thread closely for any helpful advice. I only knew of the unimaginatively named iPad but there are so many of them out there now and probably cheaper than iPad. Should I get one just for some minimal browsing and media playing? Or should I not?

I got a new tablet incredibly cheap from a man who gets his relatives to send him these things from the West. He lost money on the stock exchange, and sold the new tablet for 1/3rd of the price to recoup his losses. Its one of those 10.1 inch, Tegra 2 ones.

iPads are definitely worth it! But there are others like the htc tablet but tbh iPad is the king as it is definitely the smoothest. It really depends if you're going to use apps as well, if you simply want media and Internet then I'd recommend the Samsung galaxy tablet. Cheaper, quite awesome and has flash!

ipad has all the bells and whistles one could need but if u do a little research u could get the same stuff on an android tablet for a fraction of the price.

Personally, the iPad is the best and most effective tablet in the market!

All the others like Samsung and Motorola become extremely laggy after a couple of weeks based on my personal experience...

The iPad has the most sensitive touch screen.

guys who dont have to have a branded tab look into Chinese Ainol elf/aurora....tho nothing beats the retina display but then apple is more of a fashion statement.

bb playbook is like $160 now which is an amazing deal if you can live with not having ics and live with thier os ( browser is pretty good)

Hows the BB Playbook ?

i cant compare with the ipad as i have never used one but we brought the bb playbook for my mum about 6 months ago now and its pretty good. its more affordable than the ipad and unless u r super tech savvy (which my mum isnt) then it more than does its job for web browsing and multimedia. the only downside is that its slow to turn on.

Hows the BB Playbook ?

I have one and I have no regrets buying it. It's a lot cheaper than iPad and it runs very smoothly. It takes high quality videos and pics (1080p) which is very good. I have quite a bit of games and apps on it, including the popular ones like Angry Birds, cut the rope, plants vs zombies etc.

The real reason I bought it was to read class notes which we receive in pdf format. It works very well for that. However, the native pdf reader it comes with is [Edited Out]. I use Repligo Reader which allows you to highlight and make notes in the pdf. Pretty cool.

Another thing to note is that it feels very solid. For 1/3 the price of the iPad, you cant go wrong. BUT price isn't an issue, go for the iPad as it's obviously the best in terms of available content.

I really don't think there's one single answer for everybody. It depends on what you want to use it for and what is most valuable to you.

iPad is a nice, simple, all around solid device. Particularly the 2nd and 3rd generation. Good hardware, and the software has expanded the capabilities over time.

However, there are a number of tablets out there with lower prices, but that are still pretty solid.

Size is something to think about too. If you simply want to watch movies, browse web, look at pictures, a larger model might be better, as it gives more to see.

Portability and reading however are probably better on something smaller, a 7 inch model. I read a novel on my old iPad this recent vacation, and it worked nicely (if you set it to white text on black and lower the intensity). But it's a little too big for fully comfortable reading. It's good, but a bit smaller would be perfect. 7 inch models also tend to be cheaper.

This new Android Nexus 7 looks like a nice option.

And the BB Playbook looks like a surprisingly solid option, too, given the price.

I don't know a thing about the technicality of these technological devices lol

But! I've had an iPad for a year and a half and it's okay it's overrated though! It broke down about 6months ago had to go to Apple Store, but they gave me a brand new one so I'm not complaining ;)

I have an iPad 3 and i'm in love with it. Would definitely recommend that over others. Not that I have used any others....

Edit: Although a certain someone is permanently hogging it.

has anyone tried the nexus 7? I wanted to get that, considering it's cheep and I basically want a portable tv and games

Yes, and it's extremely good value for the price (200 dollars). The Android operating system on it is the latest major version, and it finally seems to be maturing into a what I would consider stable consumer-quality software.

The hardware is top-notch as well.

I wrote a brief review on the Blackberry Playbook in the past here. In summary, you can't go wrong with it. Especially for the price. In the end it comes down to what are you going to use a tablet for? Mostly tablets are useless toys. If you want to use it as an e-reader and web-browser, ipad 3 looks the best. Ipad 2 is also good enough. As well as some of the Android tablets. Probably the microsoft Surface will be good too. But they don't feel very portable and you'll get tired of holding it in your hand after a while. If you're at home, the good 'ol desktop monitor is a lot more useful. You might want to watch videos on your tablet, again the ipad and the other 10" tablets get tiring holding it in your hands. And if you want to watch it on a table, why not just use your monitor or laptop?

In any case, I think the playbook's a good tablet because of it's portability. The quality is really good, it's a solid build. The battery life is actually quite good too, on mine I can watch a 42 minute video and it only drains 5% of the power. This is when wireless is off though. I use mine to watch videos occaisionally and to look up something quick in an e-book or pdf, or a website and sometimes video recording (excellent quality too). I coupled mine with RIM's wireless keyboard too:

And no I don't work for RIM lol. The case and keyboard is really cool, it feels like a small book and is very portable. If you have a blackberry phone you can also use that now as your wireless keyboard and mouse, by using the trackpad or mouse on your actual phone which is cool. I use my data plan on my phone too for my internet connection if I'm traveling and not in a wifi zone. I also just recently found out the playbook has a GPS built in, which is cool.

An ipad is great piece of technology but its way over priced if you compare it to something like a samsung galaxy note 10.1 or a cheap budget nexus 7.Also the new android 4.1 jelly bean is great! highly recommend it to any1 who wants to buy a tablet and its better then ios 6

also i would avoid buying apple product because the logo is a bitten apple and a bitten apple is the original sin of when Adam bit into the apple

I dont see myself liking anything from Microsoft

Why not? The Surface has received a lot of positive reviews on a lot of its features from reviewers all around the table!

To me, the Surface - and other Windows RT tablets - are of the only ablets that have ever enticed my to buy themselves (before these, the only that interested me were the ASUS Transformer series).

because i dont like windows.... in particular its demanding updates, when Microsoft lunches new update it means you may need to change your whole PC because it is 7 years old !

Also the regular updates of softwares are annoying and heavy unlike the mac updates ......

I like the windows generally, it is easier to handle if you are someone that likes to fix things yourself , it gives you the freedom to adjust your PC the way you like but in longer term it gets annoying specially if you are depending on laptops
