Made me miss home...

Not bad, but still missing this... Or well, something like it... (Couldn't find a better pic)...

post-42979-0-73197800-1316388906_thumb.j

You could slice onions and put them in vinegar in a separate bowl... To use as a "sauce"... Yummeh!!! And also the color contrast of the purple onions and the dark green slime would go great... The eye eats before the belly brah...

Well the onion+vinegar sauce thingie is an Egyptian thing... But great... I recently found out... Give it a try... Mab tendameh insha'Allah...

BTW, with chicken and not meat... Good choice, thumbs up...

Ahhhhh....that was my husbands bowl....but this picture was too neat. Soon after I had to add tons of chopped onions and lemon with alot more juice :D

Salam to all

I have heard and seen all this thing first time.

Will you plz tell me which type of dish it is.

And which food it is.

I mean where pepl like all these

(wasalam)

It's made from a leaf called Corchorus (mloukhiye in Arabic). It's cooked with chicken, onions, garlic and sometimes chilli and served with rice. It's originally an Egyptian recipe and they make it with rabbit, instead of chicken/meat and they also blend it sometimes. We tweaked it a little (and made it better of course :P) and now it's a favourite in every Lebanese home.

Why can't they?

Most welcome.

This is all I found.... https://sites.google.com/site/aehorsman/everard-1/everard1 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mulukhiyah

For reasons that remain unclear, the dish was banned by the Fatimid Caliph Al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah sometime during his reign (996-1021 CE). While the ban was eventually lifted after the end of his reign, the Druze, who hold Al-Hakim in high regard and give him quasi-divine authority, continue to respect the ban, and do not eat mulukhiyah of any kind to this day.

Oh well....it's their loss....means more for us! :shaytan:

What's the name of Mloukhiyyeh in English? I always wondered but forget to ask, for years now, I always forget to ask... When people ask me what it is, I'll usually say it's a cousin of Spinach or something...

Jute leaves (I think)

Posted

Mother of Ali, stop being moronical... Why not just say cucumber or watermelon leaves then? Hehe...

LOL......they don't eat mloukhiyeh in those countries so there isn't an equivalent description.

Why did you guys revive this thread? It's too early for me to start getting hunGrehhh....

I like mloukeya spicey. I don't like it in small pieces, I like the leaves long. My favorite dish is shish barak. (I think that was m3weeya's fav. dish :shaytan: too) I'm sure you will disagree with me, but I find lebanese food bland. I like variety. I wish I could cook variety. My husband is not adventurous with food, he only knows Lebanese food. He thinks Iranian food is just plain rice with butter, rice and raisens, and more rice with zaffron. lol

I like eating new food. I like Iranian, indo/paki, chinese, italian, yemeni, khalaji...I have yet to try African food, I wish I would meet someone from Ethiopia, Ivory Coast or any African nation to try their food.

I like the different flavors I get from those international dishes. Sometimes I get cravings for fast food/junk food, that's where American food sounds good. You know the pizza, cold cut sandwiches, nacho cheese & chips, chocholate chip cookies, ice cream....oh oh don't forget cinammon buns.

I've tried them all and nothing comes even remotly close to Lebanese food in taste, No Italian, Chinese, Thai or Indian. When it comes to food, Lebanon is blessed with a combination of fertile vegetation and an ancient culture which has perfected the taste over thousands of years.

This is a map of the fertile crescant, and look, Lebanon lies right in the heart of it.

Yeah a little spiciness makes it a tad better even, I agree with that... Shish barak is nice as well...

Gosh wow, we all love variety, and to try something new... But Lebanese food is not kind of bland, you could ask most westerners even... You just find Lebano and anything that has to do with it "bland" and "thumbs down"...

Forget Ethiopian food, And pretty much of west African food are the same or close to each other, plenty are very good, but these people can't eat anything if the pepper in it doesn't hurt... Pepper here is not just meant for a spicy taste, but is meant to literally make you feel you have knives in your mouth, then intestines then... It is good sometimes though, lol...

But again, not because I'm from Lebanon, it's when I grew up especially that I realized that no, Leb do know their food... It's good that your husband is making you cook and eat mostly that, I'm sure you feel punished by it hunh? Also I'm sure you what you make is nasty because it's apparently not pouring out from your heart as you hate making it, food has to be made with the main ingredient... Luvvv... In no way nafsik tayyeb 3al akel enteh...

Yeah mine is the same.......only Lebanese food. Sometimes I can slip in a little bit of Italian.....but I better not cook enough to have leftovers of Italian food.....because he expects Lebanese food again the next day and sometimes the same day LOL.

It makes me sad because I like to BBQ fajitas with warm tortillas and homemade salsa (mexican dish for those of you who don't know).....but once again....he's not having or putting up with any of that.....ROFL....so stubborn.

Bismehe Ta3ala,

Assalam Alikum Brother Violent,

If you ask a westerner what is Lebanese food most typical answer is hummous, falafeel, and tabboli, that's if they don't mistake it as "Isreali". You think you will get an answer like kibbe neya, mjadara, ou yakhnet bamya. Come on, who is going to give an answer like that except a food critic.

Anyways, if you say African food is like that then no thank you. I like some food spicey but if it is going to be burning my mouth, I'd rather save that moment in hell,

MMMMMM just had a bowl with lots of lemon, chilis, and onions added in.............good migraine cure :D

Thanks for that!!!, im now haveing severe carveings for mlou5iyeh :(

This time of the year in Sydney its very "bbqish" for us Lebanese over here, mainly because of the holiday period and the normaly fine outdoor weather (weather sucks this year though), so i dont think i'l be haveing mlou5iyeh till next year unfortunatly, hopefully not too long into it :)

The answer is deffinetly yes, Not Turkey as much, although i believe the the turks influenced us with the meat dishes like shish kebab and lahme ba3ajin. But the real native dishes of Lebanon/Syria are the more predominantly vegeterian dishes, like Tabouli, falafal, houmos, eggplant and war2 3inab.... etc.

What about wara2 3inab and shawarmas and farroujj and stuff? And meza w la7meh meshwiyyeh w taouk etc... You just named a very few up there sis, and mjaddarra and stuff, plenty know it... Well depends where you are... Bass halla2 bayneh w baynik, bel sharq el awsat ayya aandaf w atyab shi? There are two... Leb and Turkey, holeh andaf shi bet 7esseh w mesh khabissa... Turks have new things I never saw before, they use plenty eggplant in many different ways... Not bad... but still doesn't compare... They're clean but their foods lack a burst of flavors like Leb food... Anyways, to each his own... In each country there's the good and bad I suppose...

Anyways, if you say African food is like that then no thank you. I like some food spicey but if it is going to be burning my mouth, I'd rather save that moment in hell, Allah lay adeer.

When it was only my daughter I could do everything in about 6 hours (cause I'm alone here)...with a few breaks here and there. Now that I have my son it takes 2 days because he doesn't like me to do anything except look at him LOL. But when I'm in Lebanon it takes no time at all to do everything....lots of help.

This last time took me one day to pull the sticks out because I always had to stop and do something else (children)......then I washed and cooked it the second day (day two took six hours again because of children)

This last time 12 hours total because of bad children LOL

Bismehe Ta3ala,

Assalam Alikum Sister Im Ali,

Twelve hours to cook, and 5 minutes to consume it. That's why I don't cook it, because it is beyond me why I should prepare a meal for so long and it is devoured in 5-10 minutes. I ate ml5eyea today at my aunt's house. I let someone else go through the hassle to prepare it. :D
