http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multiple_personality_disorder

Multiple Personality Disorder is basically a subconscious shift into another alter ego and the alter ego gives itself a name and identity. There are some people who have more than 60 alter ego's and they can't control the random shift of these random aliases. One minute you're like a 3 year old sucking your thumb, the next minute you're like an ill mannered, illiterate teenager and the next minute you're an old person etc. Each distinct personality has its own pattern of perceiving and interacting with the environment.

The question is, basically, doesn't this disorder infringe upon and negate the concept of freewill? Another interesting question is, why did God create such a disorder as this, for what purpose?

You don't have to single out this disorder, there are many disorders/illnesses/diseases which limit or negate free will (ex. born mentally challenged). Unfortunately, the theist do not have a good answer other then 'this person will be rewarded in the afterlife' or 'God is the best of Planners and we cannot understand His reasons'.

We have an objective to our existence which is to know God. I'm sure you heard the hadith of God being a treasure and He wants us to know Him.

If a person isn't mentally capable of knowing from birth till death (ex.disorders, illness, etc), what was the point of his existence? And why the injustice?

Again, you won't get an answer. Well, not a good one.

Are you sure that those are the only two answers that you will get?

</p>Why don't you try answering it then?

I have given the reason here:

As far as I am concerned we Shia should already have good answers to these questions. After 1400 years you still have people who don't even know how to deal with the most important of questions yet there are some people who spend years studying other things. We have learned people who say things like the proof for tawheed is the uniformity in the design of the universe! Or when people try to justify the existence of evil they give reasons such as "natural disasters are not caused by God but by humans" and "evil doesn't exist it simply is the lack of good". We need some sort of educational revolution so that people can actually think about these subjects critically.

That link has got nothing to do with this topic. If you have an answer, please give it. Why don't you initiate this educational revolution? Do you claim to have a better answer?

In my opinion both threads deal with the problem of evil. Who am I to initiate a revolution?

i don't get it. Why is everyone avoiding the question?

I don't know about the others but I am avoiding the question because people avoid the answers :P

Dissociative identity disorder (DID), formerly called multiple personality disorder, is an illness that is characterized by the presence of at least two clear personality states, called alters, which may have different reactions, emotions, and body functioning.

Source - http://www.medicinenet.com/dissociative_identity_disorder/page5.htm

An alter ego according to experts may have different reactions, emotions and body functioning (sometimes contradictory)

Freewill is the ability to freely choose an alternative and also implies that one is responsible for their actions, therefore has the ability to know the difference between right and wrong.

http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/freewill/

So rationally speaking the disorder is contrary to Free Will as the person who is suffering from this disorder does not really feel responsible for his or her actions.

Also, Allah (SWT) has not created this. You yourself are responsible for your actions and when you keep making the wrong choices, you are bound to face calamities.

Why would a human being wish to create this? This mental disorder is initiated by things such a stress and child abuse etc basically by bad events in your past life where you've been oppressed, suppressed, lost, scared. God created everything, especially this disorder as He created our brains, obviously.

So why? Why, why, why?

Yasoob, it's definitely a bona fide case, I've seen documentary of it on YouTube. This one lady just kept shifting personalities every few minutes. Her son was there with her, saying how difficult it's been for him. It exists, no doubt.

Let's think of it this way. We know that our destinies are conditioned by our freewill. So God knows what our actions shall be. But we have total control over it. In the case of someone with MPD, their freewill has been constrained 99%. Yes, they may not be responsible for their actions. But the whole concept of freewill goes out the window.

Unless, I'm mistaken. They might have some control over their personality fluctuations.

Ppl with mental disorders still have free will, its just that thier abilities to distinguish concepts of right and wrong etc maybe severely compromised depending of the level of misfunctioning; its like having a brain injury. My understanding is that people are judged according to their capacities.

Ahlul Bayt, are you arguing that because some people with a mental illness dont have free will, then noone has free will?  How does that follow?

No, i'm not saying that. It just seems strange that a certain group of people have a portion of their freewill taken away from them. I'm sure there is a reason, just don't know it yet. do you?

but you have to understand free will first and the concept of decisions of our life to assume that its been taken away, firstly the free will that we posses in our lifes, some may argue that if your god knows everything that is going to happen, then that is predestination, the simple reply is, Allah sbwt knowing what we are going to do, does not interfere with us making the decisions. Therefore to say that they have a portion of their free will taken is not correct, as you state they suffer a disorder, meaning some of their actions may seem to be a sin for example to us, but if it arose from the disorder it self and could not have been prevented by that person, then it is not a sin for them. so the decisions that will be judged by them will probably only be the ones that when they are thinking clearly of their own actions and not in the state of that disorder, at the time, aka no free will has been lost.

Nope that usually happens when you have consumed alcohol, smoked marjuana or have consumed hallucinogens. Mental Disorder is like when you step out of one shoe and into another in an instant without any control ... therefore you are unable to have freewill or the right to choose. Due to so many personalities, and so many thoughts and minds your ideas, views are affected and ultimately might not be ones which are in sync with the people who possess freewill.

Oh wow! Youtube! It MUST be 100% real! Certainly those actual researchers and experts in this field of study need to see this youtube video even though they've considered many cases already. http://en.wikipedia....der#Controversy
