Saalam,

I was just wondering if any one could tell me how reliable this is? - http://www.al-islam.org/encyclopedia/

Sorry, it's just that I wasn't too sure, and I was going to copy and paste some of it for someone else.

Your answers are appreciated! :D

This is an excellent source, with both Sunni and Shia references. I think you could give your friend this updated link here:

The parts of the encyclopedia that I have consulted in the past have been mostly reliable, so you can use it. Be warned though that the references are not always up-to-update. E.g. if I remember correctly, the references to ahadeeth Saheeh Muslim are referring to an older english version which differs in numbering to the version online. Another site you may also like to consult is:http://www26.brinkster.com/sdolshah1/articles.html

(salam),

It's a good endeavor, but you need to be conscientious in using it. It's good for your own info, but don't use the references listed while trying to 'prove' something to a Sunni. It seems the references given have not been checked and the encyclopedia is not the work of someone very thoroughly familiar with Sunni works.

To give an example, it frequently cites Tafsir al Kabeer of Fakhr al-Din Razi as a Sunni source. While what the encyclopedia quotes will obviously be found in the book, but one would be deceived into thinking that this was a view held by the author himself while a little knowledge of the book would show that it is written primarily to list all the known views about the particular verse in question and a particular view being present in the book does not mean the author also held the same view.

Ahhh! Thanks, I didn't know that. I've tried only to use references that are linked with Sahih Muslim and Sahih Bukhari.. I hope that's okay? :squeez:

^Should be fine. I can't imagine someone attributing fabrications to the Sahihayn. But do check from the online USC website just to be sure.

It has, however, happened that people go around citing left and right like they have so much command over the book and its contents only to end up making a fool of themselves when someone proves them wrong. It's best to check your citations from their primary sources or at least mention that you haven't checked them.

I have done just that! As in I've checked the sources as much as I can and I mentioned that I have copied from another book. That said, I wasn't trying to bash or insult someone per se but I was asked why Shia pray 3 times and why they do wudu the way they do and that the prophet (pbuh) didn't do it that way etc. I needed something to back my answer. Funny really as I tend to avoid religious discussions but meh.. Thanks again! :D

Ah, you misunderstood my post! I meant to say that I knew the answers of those and so used those links to back up points, not that I needed the links  (I just needed to know if the encyclopedia was a good book to rely on) I explained as I didn't want people to misunderstand that I was getting my myself into a Shia vs Sunni or Imam Ali vs Calipheh type of debate, rather, I was just explaining basic things which I was asked.

The all above, however, only applies if your post was put together for me :squeez:

Thank you though

Sorry, I tend to post things with everybody in mind, not just the one who started the topic. I really admire you for trying to help your friend understand the issues. There are some people at ShiaChat who think that we don't need to explain our beliefs to anyone else. They think that if Allah SWT wants to guide someone to Shia Islam then they will be guided. They forgot that Allah sent the Prophet SA to guide the people and the Imams AS to carry on after him, so it takes a human being to guide someone else. If you step in and explain something to your friend, you have done a good deed. Allah bless you.

Haha, my bad, I did think that was the case but I wasn't too sure :squeez:

I think you've praised me a little to highly there and I do hope that Inshallah I can become the sort of person you have described! I think at certain points I may have came across as sounding somewhat arrogant (which I do regret) hence why little knowledge can be so harmful! :!!!: I am though, trying to correct my ways and be a better example of the followers of the Ahlullbayt (Inshallah) and speak more humbly and realise that not everyone may see things the way I do. Sadly, its only after when you reflect on these things that you realise things could be said in a better way.

I don't know why I'm explaining this (neither do you I suppose), but I just felt like I was being admired for something that I didn't do which made me feel a tad guilty.. But I will be trying my best!!

And I agree with you I think we should set good examples so people will be attracted to the path of the Ahlullbayt and that we should teach them about it (nicely!) if they want to be taught. ^_^
