Lebanon's Parliament Speaker Supports Israeli Raid

Sept 5 - Wikileaks releases documents to show that Lebanon's parliament speaker, Nabih Berri, head of the Shia Amal movement, supported the 2006 Israeli raids against Hezbollah

BEIRUT | AFP - September 05, 2011

Lebanon's parliament speaker, a seemingly unshakeable ally of the powerful Shiite Hezbollah, drew pleasure from Israel's deadly raids on the militant group in 2006, a leaked US diplomatic cable said.

The July 2006 cable, classified confidential and released by whistleblower website WikiLeaks last week, said speaker Nabih Berri suggested the conflict was an opportunity to deal a serious blow to the Iranian- and Syrian-backed group.

"Berri condemned the ferocity of Israel's military response but admitted that a successful Israeli campaign against Hezbollah would be an excellent way to destroy Hezbollah's military aspirations and discredit their political ambitions," read the cable, filed by former US ambassador to Lebanon Jeffrey

Feltman, now an undersecretary of state. Berri, a veteran Shiite politician who has held the post of parliament

speaker uninterrupted for almost two decades, responded to the cable Monday by saying his Amal Movement remained a staunch ally of Hezbollah.

"The Amal Movement was and remains a fundamental ally of Hezbollah," said a statement from his office.

"We have demanded the US State Department provide us with the original cable through its embassy in Lebanon to determine whether WikiLeaks or Feltman is the liar."

In his cable, Feltman indicated that Berri's comments appeared to be motivated by the fact that Hezbollah holds unrivalled command over Lebanon's Shiite Muslim community.

"We are certain that Berri hates Hezbollah as much, or even more, than the (Western-backed) March 14 politicians; after all, Hezbollah's support... is drawn from the Shiites who might otherwise be with Berri," read the cable.

Feltman described Berri as having had "remarkably high" spirits during the meeting, which came a few days into the month-long war between Israel and Hezbollah that summer, at one point throwing his head back in "riotous laughter".

The US diplomat also said Berri felt betrayed by his fellow Shiite, Hezbollah commander Hassan Nasrallah, who had promised stability in Lebanon.

"We can never sit down at the table with him (Nasrallah) again," Feltman quotes Berri as saying in the cable. "We think he lied to us."

The 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah was sparked on July 12 by the cross-border kidnapping of two Israeli soldiers and ended on August 14, three days after the UN Security Council adopted a resolution calling for a ceasefire.

The fighting destroyed much of Lebanon's major infrastructure and killed more than 1,200 Lebanese, mostly civilians, and 160 Israelis, mostly soldiers.

its very weird news because in that raid many of the Amal people also got targeted so how can he be happy about the death of his own group.

i know that berri is a secular and amal and hizbullah had a big war in the 1980s against eachother

always they said amal represents syria and hizbullah iran

also i heard that berri made a big wasteful wedding for his daughter and there are accusations of corruption and also that he has hogged that position for decades.

but since the raids killed his group (about 50-60 of them) then how can he be happy?

Read about this when the first batch of wiki leaks were released. It is a shame that Amal (a corrupt group full of zo3ran) are part of the March 8 coalition...but alas, this is politics!

Man, whatever the case is, about how he got his riches (That's the only thing that bothers me about him), no doubt that he's one of the pillar of Lebanon and he's done a lot of good for it... Especially in extreme betterment of the Shi'aah areas in the north and mostly in the south...

By the way for his daughter, it's not him who threw the wedding for her, her husband did, he's a billionaire businessman in Africa, it's a fact...

Chreek kel jeha badda awedema w zo3rana to work out fine, khassa bi balad metel baladna... So it's not a bad thing... And you know given the positon of Amal and Berri himself, it would be very bad, rather disastrous if he wasn't an ally... No doubt enno el zalameh rajol dawleh khayyeh w 7arbou2 w zakeh kteer, bia3ref emtin yi chedd w emtin yi rakheh... So yeah...

Anyways Hezb-Amal-Tayyar are the main pillars of March 8, if one falls, it would be hard for the remaining two to stand straight...

Why do you guys trust Wikileaks so much ?

If you don't know by now, you should realize that the main goal of the U.S. / Zionists is to divide and conquer.

The 'Holy Grail' for them is to divide the Shia in Lebanon so they can fight each other and this will distract them

from going after Israel and Zionist plots.

You should consider this and also the credibility of Wikileaks (which is very little, IMO)

Feltman has only one goal, that is to be a towel boy for the Zionist thugs. How do you know when Feltman is lying ?

His lips are moving. Anything with him as the source is garbage in my mind.

This does not make sense. How can you condemn the israeli response and yet say its an excellent way to destroy my so-called rival? U either support it or u don't. This sounds like wishful thinking on the part of feltman.

Wikileaks = Big Lie.

That could be so, but if you are going to disregard this as a lie, you are going to have to disregard the past Wikileaks as a lie as well.

That was the whole point of Wiki Leaks, it first threw true gossips... Grabbed everyone's attention, became believable, then started throwing the lies so that people won't take them as lies... Just to create more divison etc... Their agenda has been figured out long ago...

Althought I'm not a big fan of Amal Movement, I think that statement could be a lie in order to discredit all the other reports OR Nabih Berri was trying to be diplomatic. This wikileaks report is sent out to destroy the Shiite allies.

Although there are problems between Amal and Hezbollah, but Nabih Berri wouldnt support israeli raid. This only quotation was talking out of context of a huge report. So I doubt this whole thing is a big deal.

When Condalisa Rice went to Lebanon during the war, Nabih Berri didn't go to welcome her.
