I normally repent buy bringing my hands up and sincerely ask Allah to forgive me for what I have done and promise not to do it again. Out of respect I sometimes perform wudu and do two rakats before making a dua to Allah and ask for forgiveness.

I recently heard of Namaz-e-tawbah which looks to be a very different process from what I have heard. The Quran has always specified as long as you are truly sorry, give up the act, not return to it, and ask for forgiveness one is forgiven.

Can one explain to me what Namaz-e-tawbah is in this case? what is it used for, when is it used? is it just considered as recommended, out of respect in addition to the regular sincerity, asking, and giving up the act? or is this truly required to be done for repentance to be accepted even though I felt sorry and asked Allah for forgiveness and never returned to the act.

You dont HAVE to do namaz-e-towbah for forgiveness, but I imagine that there is more chance of being fogiven if you do, otherwise why would there be such thing.

Similarly your probably gonna have more chance for forgiveness if you raise your hands and make dua to be forgiven than whilst your running on a treadmill or playing a game and asking, because it shows your paying more attention to Allah (swt) and care more about getting forgiven.

Alright thanks :D but in the end that seems to indicate it is about sincerity as one who is running on a trendmill while saying astaghfirullah clearly isn't sincere, while the sincere person will raise his hands and ask for it. Regardless thank you

Yep your right its about sincerity :D

and obviously one who takes their time to do namaz e towbah is more sincere as they are taking up more of their time to seek forgiveness than a person who just says astaghfirullah a few times, however someone may be forgiven by just saying astaghfirullah if they were sincere [you would have to double check that - I may be wrong]. After all, Allah (swt) is Al-Ghaffar and Al Ghafoor

Al Ghaffar is the one who forgives many sins

Al-Ghafoor is the one who forgives the big sins

ya sure thing, I think a true muslim should sincerely offer namaz-e- towbah every now and then if he can. Just a little bit of extra effort can earn big rewards, just like Namaz-e-shab,

Ah so in the end the point of this dua versus simply asking for forgiveness is that you use more effort and time for it. Then i'm curious as I normally give a lot of effort and time in repentance even though it isn't this as I talk about my belief to Allah, what I think of him, how and why I am wrong and how great he is, etc. As another poster also stated, he stated that it brings up rewards so is that the benefit of it too?

This is a general description of how its done. It is one of the many ways to ask Allah for forgiveness or rather one of the organized ways to ask for forgiveness. Doing this brings up your sincerity more as you went on to do it longer and possibly lead to even being rewarded for it too.

Well I dont know much about it to be honest

But this website may help you : http://www.duas.org/na_istegh.htm ^_^

P.S It says namaz e istighfar but it is the same as namaz e tawbah just has a different name

Edit : Here a few quotes

This is four rakat prayer. In the first rakat after Surah Hamd recite Ayatul Kursi once. In the second rakat after Surah Hamd recite Surah Tawheed once. In the third rakat after Surah Hamd recite Surah Falaq once. In the fourth rakat after Surah Hamd recite Surah Naas once. After concluding the prayer recite the Isteghfar ten times. The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.s.) said: If one recites this prayer on Saturday before noon the Almighty Allah forgives all his sins.

The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.s.) said: If one recites 10 rakats prayer on Tuesday in the following way that in every rakat after Surah Hamd he recites Ayatul Kursi once and Surah Tawheed seven times; the Almighty Allah shall forgive the sins of all his life.

Im not sure if these hadiths are true, they could be (im saying that cos I dont wanna attribute a lie accidently and break my fast but they may be true)
