I don't have a "favorite ayatollah", however some of the current ones we don't hear as much about but whom I admire for their knowledge would include Sayyid Sadiq Rohani (his monumental Fiqh as-Sadiq is work I frequently will refer to, and he's someone who will personally respond to your questions (in his handwriting) when you send them to him) and Shaykh Ishaq al-Fayyad (reputed to in fact be the a`lam in Najaf currently, and apparently a very nice, humble person as well from what I hear)

One of my current favourites who has not been mentioned is Ayatollah Dastghaib Shirazi (R.A). His book "Greater Sins" is one of my all time favourite books and has seriously effected how I perceive my daily life today. Other amazing Ayatollahs who may not have beenmentioned are Ayatollah Tabatabai and Shaheed a-Sadr (R.A.)

It's an extensive (26 volume) commentary written on `Allama Hilli's Tabsira. It's an istidlali fiqh work, meaning he not only gives the fatawa for the issues (ranging from tahara to the diyyat), he gives the proofs for them. He'll not only list the view he prefers, but lists alternate views, who held them, why they held them, and conclude with what and why he prefers a particular one. It's a very in depth work of great use and value, written in such a way that even if you don't always agree with whatever conclusion he's drawn, the material and evidence he's presented is enormously useful anyway and like I said it's one book I'll frequently use myself when I'm trying to find the proofs on something.
