Did the Imams know EVERYTHING or was it just an amount of wisdom and knowlegde that was given by Allah? And was it like that they could do it on their own or did they have to ask for permission by Allah in able to see "further" or "more"?

In short; define what the Shia mean with "everything"

"they encompass nothing of His knowledge except what He will." Quran 2:255

Imam al-Sadiq (as), when asked, ‘Does the Imam know the Unseen?’ replied, ‘No, but whenever he wishes to know something, Allah makes him know it.’

[al-Kafi, v. 1, p. 257, no. 4]

So they did not posess permanent knowledge of the unseen? Rather when it was necessary they could ask for it or Allah would warn them?

Is it like that?

So they did not posess permanent knowledge of the unseen?

"With Him are the Keys of the Ghayb; non knows them but He."

Quran 6:59

"He possesses the Ghayb and He does not discloses His Ghayb to anyone except to such a Messenger as He is well-pleased with."

Quran (72:26-27)

Rather when it was necessary they could ask for it or Allah would warn them

yes whenever Imam wishes to know something, Allah makes him know it...

Thank you guys, but I have one last question. How about the "The 12 Imams control the very atoms of the universe" statement. Is this because they were granted this as a gift from Allah to be able to control the atoms.. Or was it their duty to control the atoms... Or could they control the atoms, whenever needed or necessary?

In the movie nebras you could see Imam Ali growing some grass in the desert (or wherever it was). I know that this is just a movie, but it represents what we believe. So in what way do the 12 Imams control the atoms?

Khomeini said it in his book. It's a very famous quote.

yes

Allah let the Prophets and Imams (as) know (control) whatever they needed to know (control)... but they don't have the whole knowledge within themselves...

example...

"I have come to you with a sign from your Lord; I will CREATE for you out of clay a figure of a bird, then I will breath into it, and it will be a bird by leave of Allah; I will also HEAL the blind and the leper, and BRING TO LIFE the dead, by leave of Allah. I will also INFORM you of what things you eat and what you treasure up in your houses. Surely, in that is a sign for you, if you are believers." (Quran 3:49; see also 5:110)

"We gave knowledge to David and Solomon, and they both said: "Praise be to Allah Who has favored us above many of His servants who believe!" And Solomon was David's heir. He said: "O People! we have been taught the speech of Birds and we have been given (some knowledge) from all things. This is indeed manifest favor." (Quran 27:15-16)
