"Iranian Nobel peace prize winner Shirin Ebadi writes to UN human rights commissioner over treatment of Sunni minority

At least 12 people who are believed to belong to Iran's Sunni minority have been killed in clashes between security forces and anti-government protesters in the south-western city of Ahwaz since Friday.

On Monday, Shirin Ebadi, Iran's Nobel peace prize laureate, wrote a letter to the UN high commissioner for human rights, in which she said "more than 12" Sunni protesters had been killed in Iran's oil-rich province of Khuzestan, home to many Arabic-speaking Sunni Iranians.

According to Ebadi, hundreds of people in Ahwaz had gathered for a peaceful demonstration against the Islamic regime's discrimination towards its Sunni minority.

"During these clashes, more than 12 people were killed, around 20 injured and tens of protesters have been arrested," Ebadi wrote in her letter.

She criticised Iran's treatment of the Sunnis and said: "In the 32 years' history of the Islamic Revolution, Arabic-speaking Iranians have suffered from inequality and an extensive discrimination."

Recent events in Ahwaz come at a time when Iran has publicly criticised Bahrain – a country in which the 70% Shia majority is ruled by minority Sunnis – for using extensive violence in suppressing its own people.

Iran has voiced support for the pro-democracy movements that have been sweeping across the Middle East, except in Syria, a strong ally of Tehran.

Iranian state media initially ignored the clashes in Ahwaz but Iran's semi-official FARS news agency reported later that one person had been killed and one other injured.

Speaking to the Guardian, a human rights organisation based in the UK said that it had received testimony from various people who participated in the Ahwaz protest, who told them at least 12 were killed when government forces opened fire at peaceful protesters.

Reza Vashahi, a spokesman for the Iranian Minorities' Human Rights Organisation (IMHRO) said: "Unfortunately, the fate of those protesters who have been arrested is unclear and we even don't know where they have been taken to."

The organisation identified one of the dead protesters but said that the fear of persecution has forced the families of the dead protesters to remain silent.

Since the Islamic Revolution in 1979, human rights organisations have documented Iran's violation of the human rights of its minorities, especially the Kurds and the Arabic-speaking Sunnis."

^It would be believable if you posted from neutral sources rather than propaganda machines!

Does that apply to all news regarding Bahrain from PressTV say, or Abna.ir, or Al-Manar?. Are they considered 'neutral sources' on an issue such as Bahrain?, or an Syrian protest news for that matter.

^Past history has shown the biased media coverage regarding Iran by these sources whereas i dont think you have enough evidence to say that Iran is giving out false information regarding the Bahrani issue. Having said that all news agencies would have some level of biasedness and even in terms of Bahrain coverage by Iran/al-manar it might hold true. The important thing is to see which side is constantly obsessed with handing out false information.

Anyone who has read iran awakening would know the biased approach of Shirin Ebadi so i'll rather not believe her or people like her.

Shirin Ebadi as the only source? Is this meant to be some kind of a joke?

Heck, when a dozen youths burnt some dustbins in Northern Tehran last month, it made headlines and the Western media kept on discussing it for the whole week, and now they wouldn't give this story any coverage?

This Bahai B..tch.. just exposed herself and ALL OF HER FRIENDS. First question: Where did she get the report while all other media failed to see or report except a few Shia-hater networks? Does she have any kind of network or people who report to her? Especially the way she claims and puts facts forward as the primary source... Where did you get your info lady?

I knew this monafiq was onto something big and is promised to become Iranian president once regime is toppled. LOL

The other day I read a letter of communication between Jundullah backed website and Abdul Karim Soroush.

What is next? Mousavi will demand some rights for Jundullah members and Mashaei will perform his duties to prepare MKO's arrival to Iran?

The question is why Iran stands by and allows the growth of such feminist fascist and hypocrite networks to operate under the name of women rights and human rights! Those networks who receive funds and guidance from the most brutal and anti-human rights governments on the planet such as Saudi Arabia and the Zionist regime.

Shirin Ebadi is a monarchist, and during the shah's time pimps like her would probably write up arrest warrants for Muslims.

She is definitely not a reliable source LOL.

"In the Shah's era, Ebadi had been one of Iran's first woman judges. A devout Muslim, she supported Ayatullah Ruhollah Khomeini's revolution against the Pahlavi dynasty, only to find herself out of a job under the Islamic regime. That sparked a long battle against Iran's clerics for women's equality and rights for children, workers, artists and others. Though Ebadi is careful to push for change within the law, that has not kept her out of trouble. In 2000 she spent 23 days in prison, and she has received regular death threats."

First of all, if she says she's a Muslim, who are you to tell us that she's Baha'i ?

Second, calling her a b..ch and a "feminist fascist" is disgusting, considering that she was one of the first female judges of Iran and the Islamists took her job away from her.

Shirin Ebadi is a Western puppet tool that wishes so badly she was a white European (an Iranian version of an "Uncle Tom" shall we say). She is the kind of idiot "feminist" who would argue "why can't women walk around with no shirts on?" but then at the same time say "don't objective me"! Western "feminists" are truly retarded, they get angry if you mention a simple fact like that in almost every single case men are physically stronger then women. Putting aside sick "female bodybuilders" who are a small minority, and we know the world's strongest man is infinitely stronger than the "world's strongest woman": so my general point holds. Ebadi wants to spread evil, sick diseases like homosexuality that cased AIDS to exist and then spread to mostly fornicators. A man and a woman make a baby; yet the homosexual demons still want to claim they are somehow "normal" not evil freaks with a mental disease as even US scientists admitted until relatively recently when the gay promoters took control in Zionist Jewish owned Western media. Some good articles refuting myths of demonic scum homosexual supporters:

http://www.narth.com/menus/born.html Refuting the silly, completely unsupported myth/lie that homosexuality is allegedly somehow "genetic"

As for Ebadi's claims about Sunnis in Iran this is truly hilarious coming from her! Ebadi hates all Muslims, as she is an atheist "feminist" Western imperialist supporting Uncle Tom scumbag: so even if something was happening to Sunni Muslim Iranians (which it is not) she wouldn't care at all anyway as she hates religious people! Ebadi is a Shah(la) supporter and an atheist who is pretending to have alleged "concern" for Sunni Muslims in Iran that don't need it in the first place. These silly propaganda claims about Sunni Muslims in the Islamic Republic of Iran are usually the kind of propaganda garbage being claimed only by Wahhabi liars in their attempts to attack us "Rafidah" (Shi'a Muslims). But it seems Shirin Ebadi is allied with the Wahhabis (like "al-Qaeda" aka al-CIA-duh, the CIA created Taliban, and the US puppet monarchy in the "Kingdom of Saudi" Arabia) on this one, again truly hilarious!

Sunni Muslims in Iran have full rights and are for the most part proud citizens of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The only real issues that have come up in Iran have involved a few small armed groups (funded and trained by the US CIA and Zionist "Israeli" Mossad) that have attacked Iranian civilians (both Iranian Shi'a Muslims and Iranian Sunni Muslims); these have mainly been the CIA backed Wahhabi terrorist group "Jundallah" (which is also suppose to be allied with "al-Qaeda" aka al-CIA-duh and the Taliban especially the Pakistani Taliban). And other than this you have the armed Kurdish terrorist group PJAK which attacks Iranian civilians; PJAK is allied with (or part of) the communist PKK terrorist group that attacks Turkey and kills thousands of Turkish civilians.

And being a Kurd doesn’t confer automatic immunity from official repression, as Dr. Kamal Sayid Qadir found out when he accused the ruling Barzani clan of corruption, nepotism, and gangsterism. Qadir was kidnapped by the Parastin – the Kurdish secret police – held in a jail for months on a charge of "libel", and only released after an international campaign called attention to his plight. Hundreds of political dissidents and other unfortunates languish in Kurdish underground prisons, as the Washington Post reported: given the historical record, this hardly comes as a shock. What’s shocking is U.S. forces are not only standing by and letting this happen, but are actively cooperating with Kurdish partisan militias as they round up their political and ethnic enemies.

...

This is a bunch of propagandistic malarkey. Like the Kosovars, another victim group beloved by the War Party, the Kurds are clannish, militaristic, and have no liberal tradition or real experience with democratic pluralism.

Secondly, why didn't you question the same thing when you posted the first news report? How come she got this report? Why she is making up her own stuffs and lies? The entire media was blockaded somehow but she who lives outside Iran and has no source or people to report somehow managed to find out that 12 'Sunnis' are killed?

Why she had to mention 'Sunnis'? Is she a human rights BS or a Sunnis' defender? And all a sudden how come she began reporting things on Sunnis that happened in the last 32 years according to her nonsense? Why not all these years?

What is the plan? Is it her plan or her Saudis and Zionists masters told her to bring up the issue of SUNNIS for some reasons that they are planning? Sunni cause in Iran is a death cause just to let you and Shireen Ebadi know. They are 7% of Iranian population and MOST of them are happy and their rights are given equally. A few groups like the communist PEJAK and rapist and thief gang Jundullah never represented Sunnis and will never be able to provoke them.

You were quick to post something against Iran...all LIES why your evil eyes never see anything happening in Bahrain and Saudi? In one country where the entire sect is oppressed and rights are denied and in another that 75% of the population are subjugated to torture and killings by local and foreign forces because they PROTESTED and want equal rights.

If these are the methods used by liars of the century like you and Ebadi, then the responds are clear and will be harsh and extreme.

Yes, she did : http://www.progressive.org/mag_intv0904

I knew about her, but I didn't notice her name in the Guardian article. It's not easy for a Romanian to keep in mind persian names.I remembered her when I looked into her article on Wikipedia and saw her picture.

Sorry, but Ebadi has more credibility than you.I believe her.

You were quick to post something against Iran.

But it wasn't really against Iran...it was against its regime.

There's no point going back and forth with a Romanian.

Their country is utter [Edited Out], and they are trying to speak about Iran now LOL.

I think Romanians need to clean up the prostitutes, gypsies, and gangs they have splattering all over the place before they can point a finger at Iran.

We have our own ups and downs, but we certainly don't need the likes of groups like Romanians who are among the most problematic of the world, to stick their noses everywhere else.

What? That doesn't answer the question of a reliable source!

Sorry, but Ebadi has more credibility than you.I believe her.

It is not about me. I did not make a lie and never claimed anything... She claimed something very baseless and made barked where it was not necessary.

They call me "Speedy Gonzales" :)

But it wasn't really against Iran...it was against its regime.

I thought they call people like you a hypocrite. A Romanian feeling sorry for Iranians based on lies while ignores the facts and brutalities by puppets in Bahrain and Saudi.

The last thing I remember you and Irishpotato were posting under Bahrain topic was that blaming protesters for being Shia and somehow related to Iran...and indirectly you are trying to claim they all deserved death and discrimination.

Where did I lie ? I gave my references, The Guardian and Times.

And who believed her?

A better question is, who didn't believe her?

People like you, who are bothered by her criticism of the iranian regime and the situation in Iran in general.

What? That doesn't answer the question of a reliable source!

Your first question was, why didn't I make an issue of her religion when I posted the first news report. My answer was, because I didn't notice her name, so I realized who she was only after you guys started to question her credibility, making me curious about who she was.So I went to the Wikipedia article about her, saw her photo, and remembered her.

I answered separately about her credibility.

It is not about me. I did not make a lie and never claimed anything... She claimed something very baseless and made barked where it was not necessary.

She has credibility, so your claim that her claims are baseless lacks credibility.

I thought they call people like you a hypocrite. A Romanian feeling sorry for Iranians based on lies while ignores the facts and brutalities by puppets in Bahrain and Saudi.

I told you I posted in the thread about Bahrain.

And even if I didn't , I would only be a hypocrite if I had said something *against* the protesters in Bahrain.

Simply posting about something and ignoring something else wouldn't have made me a hypocrite.Everybody ignores something.

The last thing I remember you and Irishpotato were posting under Bahrain topic was that blaming protesters for being Shia and somehow related to Iran...and indirectly you are trying to claim they all deserved death and discrimination.

You remember wrongly.

Oh really, so you spent some 'Times' on Zionists' Guardian, and you think we take you serious?

The Guardian is a serious journal. You calling it "zionist" won't change that.

But still, I'm curious about why you think The Guardian is zionist.

People like you, who are bothered by her criticism of the iranian regime and the situation in Iran in general.

And the best question is, why you and people like you insist too much to proof that she is a Muslim? That makes her case very weak. It always been Western agendas to infiltrate opponents societies with such individuals and misleading them. If she was to say that she was a Bahai, she would never been able to round up a bunch of low life Muslim ladies behind her to build up her little feminist party.

Your first question was, why didn't I make an issue of her religion when I posted the first news report. My answer was, because I didn't notice her name, so I realized who she was only after you guys started to question her credibility, making me curious about who she was.So I went to the Wikipedia article about her, saw her photo, and remembered her.

What credibility? She was given a Nobel BS by the Zionist in order to make names for her so they can use her against Islam? First Muslim lady who won the prize for rejecting main Islamic principles? BUT, after all what is the relation between her credibility and the reports coming from Sunni Arab neighborhoods? The question was how come she has ACCESS to such events? It has nothing to do with someone's credibility, it is all about evidence and materials provided to her.. Who is she? She is just an individual living outside the country with no position with any reproting agency. So, was she told to say all these stuffs in thinking this would be the right moment to serve Saudi and Zionist masters?

I told you I posted in the thread about Bahrain.

Nah, it well and perfectly explains your motives. And your friends motives. Coming here on a Shiachat and telling Shia folks how to support Sunni Arab Takfiri terrorist in Iran, Syria, Iraq, Saudi, and Bahrain... While yourselves, 'socialists, zionists, and all western blocs' are rounding up Muslims and discriminating them in your own countries for being Muslim and for sharing the same religion, Islam, as those terrorists.

Hypocrites. What is so odd and solid proofs of your double standards that for self interests and for a few $Oil$ can go and shake hands with alqaida. Today McCain was in Libya's rebels city to meet the commanders who fight against Qaddafi, the same commanders who ran away from Afg/Pak and are affiliated with Alqaida.  And at the end of the day it is Iran who supports terrorist group. Yea, Iran is stupid enough not to go for its interests and for Shias interests helping some groups in the right time by somehow thinking 'human' and all those craaapp... As we can see no country ever do that. So, Mr. McCain what happened to Islamic extremism and 9,,1,,1 victims?

Please, read the interview with her that I posted before. Here's an excerpt:

"Whenever women protest and ask for their rights, they are silenced with the argument that the laws are justified under Islam. It is an unfounded argument. It is not Islam at fault, but rather the patriarchal culture that uses its own interpretations to justify whatever it wants. It utilizes psychology to say that women are emotional. It utilizes medical science to say that men's brains are formed in such a way that they are better able to understand concepts. These are all hypotheses. None of this has been proven. Needless to say, the dominant culture is going to insist on an interpretation of religion that happens to favor men. Before the revolution, there were the first 100 female judges in Iran. I was one of them. After the 1979 revolution, they argued that women cannot be judges, and they made us all into peons in the ministry of justice. But women resisted. We wrote essays, held protests, and organized conferences to insist that women being judges was not incompatible with Islam. After twenty years, they finally accepted the argument and said, OK, women can be judges. So, as you can see, one day they interpret Islam in such a way that women cannot be judges and the next day they manage to reverse themselves."

Coming here on a Shiachat and telling Shia folks how to support Sunni Arab Takfiri terrorist in Iran, Syria, Iraq, Saudi, and Bahrain...

I've never asked anyone to support terrorists.

While yourselves, 'socialists, zionists, and all western blocs' are rounding up Muslims and discriminating them in your own countries for being Muslim and for sharing the same religion, Islam, as those terrorists.

Well, that is what all your posts are about when it comes to Libya and Syria...

Some people in the West do discriminate Muslims, yes.I'm not one of them.

The point was not about discrimination. The point was that you discriminate all Muslims basing your facts on Takfiri and extremist groups, BUT then your governments go and help the same Takfiri and extremists who came fresh from battles from Afghanistan and Pakistan to fight in Libya and Syria. Totally evil intentions and satanic politics all around.

Why don't you post this in the thread about Libya ?!

nowadays the whole world is condemning iran for violating human rights, yet nobody condemns usa, uk, israel and their allies, including saudi arabia, where do human rights go when usa and uk and their allies kill afghan civilians with airstrikes? where do they go when israel with the assistance of usa have been killing plaestaninas for 60 years? where are they when usa and uk have made 4 million orphans in iraq? where are human rights when its time to talk against usa, uk, israel and their allies? iran has fought and raised his voice against usa, uk and israels since their revolution started. and they have been in to sanctions for this period of time. do you know that there is a nasibi satellite channel by the name of noor and another one by the name of sadai afghanistan with the mission to say whatever nonsense that they want against ahlebait (as)?

in zahidan, before the day of ghadir khum, the great mulla of friday (a sunni) said that whoever celebrates eid ghadir is a MUNAFIQ (HYPOCRITE). why no sunni in iran or out of iran raises voice against these type of people while the iarnian government and people did not tell them anyhting? in mecca saudi arabia killed iranian shiite pilgrims because they said down with america and israel. why no one in the world raised a voice against this oppression of saudi arabia, it is haram to shed blood in mecca. (they are the followers of yazid). iran is the only shiite country right now in the world who rasies his voice against oppressors. that day a mulla on noor tv was abusing imam mahdi(aj) without having any evidence from a shia source whatsoever, and people were calling this tv channel from iran(they were saying that they are calling from iran) and they were praising this mulla,do you think when shias listen to this they will stay calm? when we talk about ghadir and the martyrdom of lady fatima(sa) with sunni documents and sahih hadiths and tradiions, every sunni raises voice that why are we saying such things, but when they abuse us without any shia documents , why should we stay calm? may Allah curse enemies of muhammad and ale muhammad (pbuh&f).

The propaganda machine is sure working hard to create a Sunni/Shia divide in Iran, when none probably exists, and if it does, it's marginal at best.

"12 Sunnis killed" huh? They couldn't just be ordinary protestors? They had to be Sunni, right? I'm shocked they left out the "Arab" label.

Shame on those manipulating and twisting facts to provoke and shame on those that fall for these tactics.

Its now official guys, Shirin Ebadi is on drugs and seems to be hallucinating.

Extract from a recent interview with her:

Q: And in your opinion, does the current U.S. president respect human rights?

A: Mr. Obama has so far shown that he respects human rights. (Maybe someone should remind her that the Obama administration were referring to Mubarak as an ally till the very last minute, refusing to even admit the fact that he was a dictator *joe biden*)

Shirin Ebadi, in exchange for her Nobel Peace Prize, is a mouthpiece for the West.

Did she ever say anything about the people being massacred in Gaza?

Did she denounce the Israeli attack on the medicine convoy ship when 9 people on board were shot to death?

Did she ever criticize the Saudis or the Bahraini king for the rape, torture and massacre of the Bahraini people?

Did she rise up in defense of the Bahraini people as their mosques and mourning places are being destroyed?

i would like to see video, image or some words from those sunni families killed..

Why would you beleive this lady words who is not even in iran? Question is where did she get this news from? Or did she make them up to satisfy her masters?

"had received testimony from various people who participated in the Ahwaz protest, who told them at least 12 were killed when government forces opened fire at peaceful protesters."

This could be easily a lie, any one can claim that they have heard testimony from blah blah people, saying that this happen, While it could have never happen.

Is there more than 1-3 more source indicating taht this action against sunni people took place.

I searched google all of the website that have this article refer to Guardian whom refer to Shirin Ebadi that does not even live in iran. They also refer to anonymous testimony which could be made up.

OP: should look into more sources before believing in the story right away.

Does that apply to all news regarding Bahrain from PressTV say, or Abna.ir, or Al-Manar?. Are they considered 'neutral sources' on an issue such as Bahrain?, or an Syrian protest news for that matter.

Well, at least they DO report on Bahrain. I haven't heard a peep from any western news agencies about shia killings that goes around in Bahrain and Yemen. But they sure are quick to liberate land of Ghaddafi. I wonder if its the oil, what do you think?

You are Saying that They Have Been Killed By SECURITY FORCES, What is Wrong in That, Security Forces are for the Protection of Nation & its People, It is Their Job To Save the Society From Terrorists.

BUT IN BAHRAIN OCCUPATION FORCES ARE KILLING UNARMED SHIA'S

Shirin Ebadi is a monarchist, and during the shah's time pimps like her would probably write up arrest warrants for Muslims.

She is definitely not a reliable source LOL.

I am not surprised at how many believe the lies cast about by Iran, but Ben there was a time when I held you in esteem but you have twisted it into extreme. I feel sorry for you now.
