Malangs are like Persian Sufis and are found mostly in Pakistan. In India malang is defined as a person who doesn't care for the world and is always busy with his religion.

Hope this helps as there is a lot of controversy about malangs. You can talk bad about them on this forum as the malangs are a minority here but don't ever do it in a gathering of Pakistani community.

Ya Ali Madad

(salam)

There are many meanings and types of Malang - they are not a sect or religion but they are more a type of people

In the UK Malangs are usually referred to those people who do matamdari on a regular basis - a couple of times a week or similar, they do zanjeer zani and so on, wear large karreh (huge heavy anklets) around their feet and some wear like loads of beaded necklaces.. most of the malang I know give matam top priority to everything else religious based such as namaaz etc. - a general stereotypical view is they do Ali Ali all day.. If you ever see a jaloos on the streets of UK or anywhere in the world the matamis are mostly malangs

Now in Pakistan a malang is also a person who smokes weed all day, wears sort of tatted clothes, lots of beaded necklaces and so on.. a little like a fakeer.. in fact Ive been told there is a special train that travels to Daatha Darbaar in Pakistan full of malangs puffing away, like thats what they do.. and again they get into a hajoom and start chanting Mola Alis name and get into a jalee.. like they can feel the chant taking over their bodies.

Malang is by far not a bad thing... and please do not hold me against what I have described as there are lots of Malangs that do pray namaaz and don’t smoke weed (in Pak).. I was just describing the majority... In fact my little one whos only 2 listens to Nohay all the time and does matam in her own sweet way.. ALL DAY... we call her little malangi so its by far not a bad thing

But I wouldnt say you could say bad things about them here as there are little malangs using this website - at the end of the day they are Shia aswel and we don’t want to anger Mola Ali and Allah by hurting a fellow Shia do we??

If malangs did not do their Azaadari then how would the world know about the mission of Imam Hussain etc.??

that was my 1st reaction too!! lol

ok here's what I think from experience since my man is one :yaali:

there r different types of mallangs.. shia.. sunnis.. sofies.. siks.. etc the word itself means a crazy wondering man.. but the social meaning is different.

I'll talk abt the shia mallangs.. they r dedicated to serve the Imams and the cause of Ahl Albait.. they do dua kumail every thursday and do some aza after it, and on the 10th of Muharam they do zanjeer (the blood thing) BUT they only do it for few mints (max 4mints) in the whole year.. other than that they r shia like everyone else with praying and fasting..

there r so many misconceptions about them from what I read online, but in reality they r just like any shia.. coz I know many shias who rn't mallangs that do aza on regular basis

Malangs have nothing to do with shiaism. They are extremely dangerous deviants. They are a black spot on the name of shiaism and act as parasites to the madhab of ahlul bayt. Pious shias should fall down like a ton of bricks on these deviants and rid shiaism of their pollution!

^ y r u so against em? and I hate it when ppl just judge the whole thing.. u should look at each individual and talk separately.. coz the mallangs I met were so nice and so devoted and there r some shia I met that were horrible.. it all goes to each person.

lool it's not something u turn in to! :P I actually don't like the labeling.. just be urself and try ur best to follow God and Ahl albait in the way u think is best :)

I didnt mean it as the label though, I want to know the practices and beliefs, I know malangs do blood letting, I can’t really do that, I can’t stand seeing even a drop of blood  so thats abit of a mission for me lol. Somone should construct a website, simply dedicated for malangs only, that way it would be clear for somone like me. ;). unless there is one already?

Consummate nonsense.

Malang is just an attitude or approach towards Islam. It's not a sect or faction with a different belief system like Isma'iiyyah etc.

Malangs are like Persian Sufis.

Not quite. Sufis are a distinct sect. Malangs are not.

i want to know the practices and beliefs.

No different to those of other Shias. Malangs exhibit a lot of zeal in whatever they do.

Malang is just an attitude or approach towards Islam.

That is a short but accurate description.

Consummate nonsense.

Malang is just an attitude or approach towards Islam.

True. It's just another(there's only one approach to Islam, that recommended by ahlulbayt) approach to Islam. To make it worse it's just a rip off of sufis, ghalis, ismailis, shiakhis etc. Since malangs don't have a standard set of beliefs, some are more deviated than others.

What's common among them is their practicing of idiotic azadari rituals(zanjeer/qama zani, tazia etc) which involves aping the innovations started by safavids(ex sufis) and further propagated by the eunuch led qajar regime. As far as the indo-pak is concerned, all the filthy azadari rituals have been created by the famous sufis of the land and it's no wonder the biggest azadari comical performances are held in Multan(Punjab), the stronghold of deviant heretic sufis, pir, mureed, sajada nasheens etc. Ironically these malangs are also from punjab. For further details, check this thread:

It's not a sect or faction with a different belief system like Isma'iiyyah etc

Unfortunately they've borrowed heavily from ismailis as well as other deviants. The parroting of the idiotic phrase "ya Ali Madad", especially as a greeting, comes from the deviant ismailis. Their famous Nad e Ali junk is also found in deviant books such as the deviant heretic Mulla Jami's Shawahidun nubuwwah, instead of being present in any classical shi'ite authoritative text. Same for their Khutbatul bayan and other such non sense which has been imported from the deviant sufi Hafidh Rajab al Bursi's mashariq anwar ul yaqin. Deviant malang zakirs also propagate heretic shaikhi beliefs from the pulpit. See post# 20, here:

Their idiotic belief of syeda can't marry non syed is also imported from deviant sunnis. See post# 13, here:

and post# 103, here:

The less said about these deviants, the better.

But what does the word "malang" mean..?

It's hard to translate "malang" in one English word. It basically means an aashiq (devotee) who is outwardly perceived as majnoon (insane) and has a be-niyaz (indifferent) attitude toward the mundane; the one who feigns madness but who is in fact wise and knowledgeable. One historic individual that comes to mind is Bahlol of Baghdad, the companion of Imam Musa Kadhim.

In the Indo-Pak context, some criminlised drug addicts who live off charity and reside in and around the shrines of sufi saints are also called malangs, such as the pic posted above, due to their outward display of carelessness and insanity. This isn't the type of malang I am talking about. This isn't the type of malang people are when they refer to themselves as "malangs".

But what does the word "malang" mean..?

In Malay Language, malang means “unlucky” ()

I am not sure what Pakistani Malang are, but why would someone intentionally wear tatters clothing, run around with unshaven hair and untrimmed beard and beg for their live hood?

Cleanliness is extremely important in Islam. Even if you are poor, you can’t be dirty.

People with this get up and such a lifestyle are actually Fakirs rather than malangs. HERE is what a Fakir is. They come from all backgrounds; Sunni, Shia, Sufis etc. The pic posted a couple of posts before is likely to be of a Sufi Fakir.

Here are some Sufi Fakirs singing at a shrine. This is a real video with [warning] live musical performance.

Actually, to be fair, it is widely known that nad-e-Ali is not an authentic du'a. And it is a bit dangerous as per the surah that challenges man to produce a surah in likeness of the Qur'an

Quote
And if ye are in doubt concerning that which We reveal unto Our slave (Muhammad), then produce a surah of the like thereof, and call your witness beside Allah if ye are truthful. (2:23)

Many people, on this forum and in real life, go around saying nad-e-Ali is like a surah from the Qur'an, and as it is not even from the mouth of a ma'soom, this is borederline kufr.

But what does the word "malang" mean..?

Malang is a farsi word and it means "single men with ripped clothes and bare feet".

Outwardly they look like beggars but I think it is due to their odd lifestyle which also involves "intoxiacation" of some sort (at least in the traditional sense).

AOA,

A malang is who prays five times a day, recites atleast 10 Aayat everyday, not only does he mourn during the month of Muharram but the passing away of all the Aimmah (as), beats his chest at the thought of Karbala, cries for all Imams (as) before falling asleep, goes to mosque every thursday, speaks the truth and takes good care of his family and friends.

Please stop creating these divisions, live and let live. We are going through a very bad time, hold hands and unite nd make peace. We need positive energy and lots of it.
