This is a sahih hadith from the book "Man Laa Yahduruhu al-Faqih," by Sheikh al-Sadouq. The book is in Arabic, and has not been translated into English. The hadith can be found in volume 1, here .

هشام بن سالم عن أبي عبدالله ( عليه السلام ) قال صلاة المرأة في مخدعها أفضل من صلاتها في بيتها ، وصلاتها في بيتها أفضل من صلاتها في الدار

Imaam al-Saadiq said: The prayer of a woman in her room is superior/better to her prayer in her house. And her prayer in her house is superior/better to her prayer in the surroundings (meaning, in public, in a mosque).

It is something which is mustahhab, rewarding. It is not a matter of halaal and haraam. As the narration implies, women have the right to pray in the mosque. It's just that praying in other locations is superior.

We need to balance the understanding of these narrations however with the understanding of time and place. The masjid is supposed to be a place where people come together to worship and to discuss the affairs of the community.

Now that women have become more normally engaged in these sorts of affairs, it is normal that they should be at the masjid so that their voices and insight are part of the mix.

By "balance" I take it you mean "ignore them and do the opposite of what they say".

A woman with, for example, a graduate degree in public relations, or business administration, or finance, or community and public development, or Islamic studies, for that matter - should stay away from the masjid? This is losing the forest for the trees.

I wouldn't attend Friday prayers at the mosque. They are just way to many men around the mosque at that time. Maybe that is what is being implied on why women should pray at home, because it is better to avoid the crowd (mostly men).

The hadith mention about women attending mosque solely for prayers. It probably wouldn't include cases when women are already outside (traveling or working) and when going home to pray is simply impossible, would it?

What about women praying in these small back room in the University. If you are a student, sometimes you have to pray outside because you are not going to be able to go home. Am I correct to assume that the hadith doesn't cover the above scenario?

Also, the Masjids/Mosques in the USA (and elsewhere) serve many purpose. They are not just a place to pray but also a place where people come to hear sermon, read the Quran, gathering place for reading the dua on Thursday night and also to attend the Sunday school. All of these should still be allowed, right?

THANK YOU!

these hadeeth, I believe are very contextual. And this issue raises a very important topic about the separation of women from society (although what society is complete without women, I dont know) but every year after the Hajj season, when both women and men come together, shoulder to shoulder, my doubts about whether we have it right in regards to telling a woman "her place" are confirmed. I sincerely believe we have it all wrong.

Doesn't matter what you believe son unless its backed up by the akhbaar of masomeen (as).

Also your talk about hajj holds no water, as lots of things change when a person is in ehraam.
