A funny as well as confusing situation arose yesterday on Ashura in one of the Muharram processions here in Pakistan.

A group of half a dozen local religious Sunni men, heavily bearded with trousers up to the ankle, asked permission from our procession organisers to do the volunteer work for clearing the streets and maintaining order along with dozen others Shia scouts for the sole purpose of showing solidarity with the Shias.

They were granted permission and given badges and were identified to the police beforehand to avoid confusion because in usual circumstances these Muawiyah look-alikes would alarm everyone with their presence in a Shia juloos. And so it happened.

When one of the Sunni volunteer crossed the security back into the procession, a Shia youth who wasn't aware of what's going on pounced on him and pushed him away thinking he was up to something terrible. The Sunni guy was embarrassed and politely informed him that he was a security volunteer too and showed him his badge. The Shia guy couldn't believe it and stood there confused.

It was a weird sight seeing half a dozen Wahhabi look alikes leading the procession and clearing way and doing body checks on people entering through the check posts.

Masha'Allah, they are showing their love for Ahlulbayt (peace be upon them all)! :D

I know well weird. I thought it was you...but didn't want to make the first move in case I was wrong LOL

An honour to finally meet you, albeit briefly (had to leave as mum was with me).

His masaibs are always vicious. He's a good friend of mine - my favourite urdu speaker.

We shall definitely meet again!
