Here are some hadeeth concerned with joking.

All of the hadeeth that has been graded Hasan by Al-Majlisi is due to 'Alee ibn Ibraaheem's father, Ibraaheem ibn Haashim Al-Qummee, which if he is in the chain it becomes hasan, but this is the highest level of Hasan we can have.

There's no problem with joking.

As as you know brother Nader Zaveri, we have a number of ahadith of the Prophet (pbuh) and our Imams (as) encouraging making our brothers laugh. ;)

The only problem is when when you joke so much that you basically become a clown and lose your dignity.

I don't know of any extreme that is good.

We also have hadiths prohibiting types of joking; ie when you demean our brother/sister (even if its a joke), or when you lie as a joke, etc

If there is nothing indecent in jokes, then its allowed.

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Mu’ammar ibn Khallad who has said the following: “Once I asked abu al-Hassan (as) ‘May Allah keep my soul in service for your cause, can a man be with a people who speak and laugh at funny stories?’ The Imam said, ‘It is not an offense if there is not that.’ I (the narrator) then thought ‘that’ was his signal to indecent acts. The Imam then said, ‘Arabs would come to the Messenger of Allah and bring him gifts and then say, “Pay us for our gifts.” The Messenger of Allah would laugh. When he felt sad he would say, “What happened to the Arab man? I wish he comes by.”’”

Yeah no doubt, I didn't mean to quote only the "harsh" hadeeth on joking. The one that Jondab has posted is SaHeeH, it shows you what type of joke is permissible. It was funny when I first read it actually.

You are right, you don't want to seem like a "class clown" and no one takes you seriously.
