Mafatih al-Jinan is like in every Shi`a's household, usually. It's almost like a second Qur'an to us ;) Of course I'm kidding about that

Basically it has different things that are mustahab for you to do (أعمال) on different nights, days, etc. For example, on the 23rd of Ramadhan it has a very large amount of Du`a and A3maal for that night because it's very recomended. It also has general ziyarat and dua that you can say everyday, whenever you want. This was compiled by Sheikh Abbas al-Qummi (الشيخ عباس القمي)

I highly recommend you get a copy at your nearest Shi`a mosque (it should be there), as this book is honestly filled with many great duas (أدعية) that will help you get closer to Allah, inshallah. Also, please remember that you need to ponder over the duas that you read while you read them. To get closer to Allah, it's not as easy as just reading a simple dua and changing overnight. I find it easier to do this after salah, I just sit down and think about my actions during the day. When I read the dua, I try to understand it, and try to understand why I'm reading it in the first place. This helps you contemplate Allah, and helps you get to know Him, and how He is filled with Mercy, etc. Inshallah Allah will make us all closer to Him, Ameen.

^^ Yes, its included.

And every other Dua, Ziyarat or Amal you can think of.

And often it tells you the history, references, benefits and stories associated with them.

Mafatih is like a Dua Encyclopedia.

Ok thanks, but how do you know its from him, and how is his translation?

I have a/h visited Qum recently and visited Ansariyan bookstore and saw it there. Badr Shahin has a track record of translating a number of Arabic texts to English. It is easily worth the cost offered by Al-Khoei bookstore , these 2 volumes are huge. If you write to Ansariyan they might also ship to you - but you will not get it for at least 2-3 months from them.

k.h.

It is nice to know that Mafatih is/will be available in English soon.

In the mean time one can use the following online book with selective duas and aamal:

http://www.shiamasji.../books/Almanac/

Also the following site is great for duas:

Hey, has anyone purchased this english one yet? Cause i want to order but i want to know if this has everything that you would find in the Urdu one? Cause my mom has an Urdu Mafathi Ul Jinan, and if you compare that to "Almanac" or "Call Upon Me" they miss have of the stuff that it is in Mafathi. Also how is the arabic text in it? is big enough or squeezed together, i am able to read arabic but not urdu (that well) so i want the "instructions" to perform aamal and their "fasilat" in english while the actual supplications in arabic.

Please let me know. Thanx!

I have a copy and it is complete, although I'm not sure if the Urdu version has any extra stuff added as I cannot read Urdu. The Arabic text is on the small side, but readable. Be aware, however, that this is two very large volumes; that is, not something to be carrying around places, but is good for at home.

Excuse my ignorance, but do you all read the dua's in arabic and have the translation handy for assistance? I'm arab, so not sure how non-arabs handle day-to-day supplications etc., would be good to get some insights, since I teach Quran to a pakistani community...

if you know how to read the Quran, reading du'a should be piece of cake,no?

I don't have an issue with Arabic, but the rest of my family does so I like to have it be handy for them.

ahsant, very thoughtful of you.

how come you're more proficient in arabic than the rest of your family?

Just FYI, Sayyid Ali Quli Qara'i is currently translating Mafatih into English. I am not sure when it is set to be finished, but be on the lookout as I know for a fact that he is doing it right now.

Because I studied Arabic for 10 years and they didn't. And we're Persian, not Arab so it's not our native language.

That's what I was asking about. I remember when he started translating it I was an undergraduate student. Now I'm half way through my Phd and it's still not out yet!

Shaykh Abass Al Qummi's Mafatih Al Jinan translated to English is sold through al khoie foundation ^ if you have not bought form them yet they have a very nice selection of shia related books. i can link if you need it?

and it is translated by Badr shahin it is two volumes at least over a thousand and some hundred pages in each. and if i recall correctly was $60 plus shipping, although the other translation may be a better one we must wait and see insha Allah

Many non-arabs (who can read Quran) also read dua's in Arabic. And from time to time they read its translation in their local language to understand what it means. Also audio files with arabic plus translations are also available.

that is not bad that is $30 per book and the books are very large.

60$ is fine, but the problem is that they charge an extra 60$ for shipping and handling for where I am. I mean seriously, that's how much it would cost me to drive down their center to get the book myself. I find it ridiculous (and perhaps even shameful) in regards to how much they charge in terms of shipping.

Also, Ali Quli Qara'i is the best translator ever. So I rather save my $ for his translation.
