If you dont wanna go.. don't. Something tells me you aren't really the life of the party (the whole pagan haramness bit) and will most likely not be missed.

Are you kidding? I AM the party (not to brag but I am a former cocaine/ketamine addict so I've seen my fairshare of parties) however I try to stay away from things that are haram as best I can, why wouldn't I?

(salam),

There's no harm in greeting the Ahlul Kitab on their ocassion (a/c to Ayatullah Sistani):

305. It is permissible to greet Ahlul Kitãb (the Jews and the Christians, etc) and also the non-Ahlul Kitãb on the occasions they celebrate like the New Year, Christmas, Easter, and the Passover.

You're in France, aren't you? You sure the part will have no wine being served, no Haram food being served, such as chicken or no 'Christmas' music playing? It's really not the Christian origin this time. It's the quality of the party.

I'm sure you're aware you're not allowed to eat at the same table, where wine is being served, and drunk. You have to get up from that table. Better, not attend than embarrass yourself by freaking out when you see wine.

Besides, like others mentioned, it's going to be Muharram (one of the first ten days, if I'm not mistaken; during which more care is to be taken). You'll feel better by staying at a Mahdi Modarresi Muharram lecture, than go see people dance and drink at a wild party.

It's a pagan holiday, but I don't even think that's the worst part. You shouldn't go to a place where drinking and dancing is inevitable, especially since you were formerly a cocaine addict. I'm not trying to take shots, but I'm looking out for what's best for you brother. You're really not going to be missing out on anything.

No, that would be the fools boozing it up, but you can think whatever you like, come over round my place baby and I'll show you party. ;)

Thanks for the advice brothers, the parties I was invited to was just a small get togethers with friends and the like, I think there was goin to be wine and spirits at a couple of the parties but at my best mates place I was promised a hearty hookah session and he doesn't drink either so. I'll probably cancel for most of them aside from my mates shindig. Thanks for the Imam Sistani quote!

Salams.

Im a revert to Islam, and i still live at home (being only 18 and all..) and my familys xmas is only a family tradition, not related to religion at all. I sit and give them gifts, and they give me, and its a way of showing each other we love each other. Were the type of family that are totaly opposites and dont have many occasions were we sit down all together, so xmas time is sort of only a family time.

I asked my mum if she sees any religious value in it at all, and she doesnt, neither does the rest of my family.

I buy them little gifts with the note, "I Love You", on it. Thats all it is for me, they give me gifts, i give them. That is all.

And of cours Muharram is during Xmas, so im going to cut it short n sweet, give thanks to my family, then off to lectures. My family will always be my family, and xmas = family time. Even if only for 1 hour!

Salams.

Asalamu Alaykum,

The topic is very simply actually, parties and the like are not haram unless certain properties are introduced, 1.alcohol, 2.scadly dressed woman, 3.music, 4.drugs, 5. any other thing that is haram for us to do in our day to day life.

Therefore its very easy to decide within yourself wheather these things are haram or not, ask yourself is there going to be alcohol there, 150% yes, is there going to be music & scadly dressed women etc, 200% yes, if you know these things are there and u go saying its ok i can handle these things without committing sin, then in my opinion that person would be arrogant, because not sinning is a choice, as is going to a place harbouring sin's, its up to the indvidual to choose. however choosing to go would simply state that your willing to be in a sinful enviroment, an as the saying goes, "we are like those we hang around" therefore if you endorse these parties and go to them to socialise with these people then it means you are ok with their sin, meaning u accept the sin, wheather u commit it or not.
