More trouble in Iran. Telegraph reports of shooting on unarmed protesters. Guardian reports clashes between security and protesters. I couldn't find an Iranian source.

-------------

There were bloody clashes as young people launched a fresh wave of anti-government protests on the country's official Students Day.

Police used warning shots, baton charges and gas but failed to stop rallies, sit-ins and campus marches across the capital.

Universities in several cities, including Tehran's top seats of learning, were sealed off as guards checked identity cards of people trying to join the student demonstrations.

Earlier in the day, the authorities detained 23 members of a protest group of grieving mothers. They included the mother of Neda Agha-Soltan, known as the "Angel of Freedom", who was shot by pro-government militia at the height of demonstrations against Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's re-election in June.

Hajar Rostami-Motlaq has enraged the authorities by condemning pro-government students who accused British agents of killing Miss Soltan.

She was later released but friends expressed concern for other members of the protest group, Mourning Mothers of Iran, who were rounded up at a weekly protest in Tehran's Laleh Park.

Supporters of opposition leader Mirhossein Mousavi chanted "Death to the dictator" and "Do not be scared. We are all together", according to witnesses at the rallies on university campuses.

The authorities had deployed troops and militias in anticipation of the protests, the fourth such outbreak under the opposition strategy of using official public holidays as cover for protests.

TELEGRAPH REPORTS

Thousands of Iranian police today used batons and teargas to disperse demonstrators chanting anti-government slogans in the latest street confrontation between the government and the opposition.

In the largest protests in months, university students held rallies at campuses across the country to show that the reform movement was still alive despite a fierce crackdown on dissent after the disputed presidential election in June.

The authorities shut down the mobile phone network in the centre of Tehran to stop opposition protesters from contacting each other, the reformist website Rah-e Sabz said. At least two women supporters of the opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi were among those arrested, the site said.

Clashes erupted as thousands of protesters massed in the streets outside Tehran in support of the students. As the crowd chanted "Death to the dictator," riot police fired teargas and Basij militiamen charged the crowds, according to witnesses.

Active coverage of the 16th of Azar events in Tehran and other cities

On the morning of Azar 16th, security was strengthened in the streets surrounding all universities, to prevent any possible unrest.

"Tabnak" reports: Police forces, divided in many groups of 3-4 (with the support of motorbike-mounted police), have positioned themselves in the areas surrounding Tehran university, Khaje Nasir university, and Amir Kabir university.

Meanwhile, Abureihan st has been closed off, and Union st (as well as "16th of Azar" st) are under Police control.

In the area stretching from Revolution square to Vali Asr square, nearly all shops are closed. In the areas surrounding the universities, some clothing shops are still open.

Traffic has been heavy between Revolution sq and Vali Asr sq. Police have opened the BRT lane to regular cars to ease traffic congestion.

Also: Police cadres are positioned 10-20 metres apart from one another on Agriculture blvd from the Worker st intersection to Vali Asr sq (with denser forces positioned near Vali Asr). Police cars have been conducting routine patrols on Karim Khan Zand st, between the Vila st intersection and the Samieh st intersection.

Each university entrance is being guarded by 2-3 officers, to keep out non-students.

It should be noted that these security measures have only taken place in the areas mentioned above. To this point, fortunately, there has been no outbreak of confrontation in the universities. (Time, 13:27).

I am too lazy to translate the updates. I might do it later.

Translation continued from last post...

New reports have been surfacing of students clashing with one another in Azad university.

Opposing student groups outside of Azad university's Technology department chanted at each other, with the confrontation becoming violent at times. Some of the windows of the university's technology building were broken in these scattered clashes. (Time; 14:32).

There have also been crowds numbering in the hundreds gathering outside of Shiraz university. Due to rain conditions, the crowds there have been modest in size. (14:38).

The confrontations have heightened, with the students engaging each other physically rather than verbally. It has been reported that plain clothes security officials have used tasers against some of the students, and that tear gas has been fired. (14:45).

Some clashes have occurred on University st. Parts of Revolution st have been closed off to pedestrians. Reports have also arisen of clashes between pedestrians and Police forces in Amir Kabir university. (14:55).

Maybe continued later...

Should we worried about Iran becomeing secular? I used to until recently be worried if there was something antigovermental going on in Iran, but i dont see it as a bad thign anymore. I mean if the people want a goverment without religion i actually see it as a good thing, if poitics and religion are the same religion itself will become corrupt becuase politics is corrupt. I mean thats what happened to the Catholic Church, they became more powerful and became corrupt as they became powerful. Leaders in Iran are themselfves Human, they should not be thought as people that can never make mistakes and in some form lean towards corruption.

This is not a question of secular vs. religious

There is much more at stake here, which could affect the power balance of the world in decades to come.

The way I see it, there will be five world powers in the near future: the United States, Russia, the European Union, China, and Iran. In terms of conventional strength, Iran is the weakest of these powers. However, they have one advantage over the others. Jalal Al-e Ahmad wrote in his 1952 book "Gharbzadegi" that, in the 1930s, the Soviet Union was the flagship of world revolution. They sponsored revolutions everywhere, and they became the ideological role model for these revolutions. However, Al-e Ahmad wrote that "today" (1952), the Soviet Union has more in common with the West than with the East, and that China has replaced the Soviet Union as the flagship of world revolution.

If Al-e Ahmad was alive today, I am sure he would say that, in the last 20 years or so, another transition has taken place. China now has more in common with the West than with the East. And Iran has replaced China as the flagship of world revolution. And the chief indicator of this (in my opinion) is Iran's popularity and ideological influence in Latin America and Africa. Throughout modern history, no two parts of the world have been more volatile than Latin America and Africa. They have the most revolutions and the most coups. The fact that the countries of Latin America and Africa look up to Iran gives Iran a certain advantage over its larger, stronger adversaries.

If Iran becomes just another secular Muslim country, all of this means nothing and Iran will be a proxy again instead of projecting its own power.

God forbid Iran becomes secular, not because I am religious or what not. But the "Green Movement" is not the majority of the Iranian nation no matter how much the West try hard to depict that image.

Let's say this "Good secular" change takes place, what are you going to do with the Basij Militia who have been ideologically and religiously influenced, would they just stand there and take it? I doubt it.

Secularism today means one thing: Divided, weak, pro-Capitalist, and a pro-Western country.

Yea with that kind of secularism, then we would have another shiittistan (Pakistan) who is about to collapse... with corrupt rulers, bribery, full of puppets, injustice, bases of 10s of local and international spy agencies, implementing evil agenda in the region with its masters, using religion as a tool....... Qom will be used as Deoband....... and Khamenei and Jannati will be used as Qazi Hussein Ahmad......and etc...

Why everyone is dreaming of perfect democracy and secularism where Islam is ruling and West is not able to interfere? Why no one is trying to have perfect secularism and democracy and better governments in countries who are ALREADY SECULAR and failed states?

secular countries, west and east, when worried about their national security do the same thing when there is fear of civil unrest. i don't know why so many people make it sound like this is something that only happens in iran.

The Islamic Republic displays the wrong image of Shia Islam. They have distorted what our religion really is. And I believe it is better for them to leave than stay.

Good thing we have Islamic experts like you to tell us what the right image of islam is. Thank you dear sir for your in depth knowledge of shia islam.
