When you can't make it to the masjid and have to pray at home or elsewhere do you feel more comfortable when praying in an isloated corner/area where noone can see/hear you or do you prefere to pray in front of others. I, personally, like to be isolated....sometimes I feel like when iam praying others are critiqing my salat and I just get kind of uncomfortable even though I know they are not...is anyone else like this?

(salam),

At home, I prefer to pray in my room. But I hate it when one of my parents or siblings enter the room, and stare at me, like I'm an alien. And then, when they move around the room, that makes me even more uncomfortable. So isolated, is good with me. :) Though, if the room is comfortable, as in, cool, it will help.

But mosques, I'll love to pray in them. It's basically a place of worship, so I don't mind people praying. So basically, it's people doing other things in the place of prayer, that irritates me. But I don't usually go to mosques, even though it's very close to my house, it's Sunni, so I might as well pray in my home.

I see what you're saying. One of the things I find highly annoying in jamat prayers is people who whisper loudly in sujood and ruku probably out of some misplaced sense of piety. To top it off, they go out of sync with the Imam's recitation too and you end up hearing a cacophony of sounds.

This one time during Juma, I discovered to my horror that I had absentmindedly put on two different shades of socks. Every time I did ruku I cringed with embarrassment :( . Concentration went out the window.

However, regardless of one's comfort level, praying in congregation is given higher preference in Islamic rulings compared to praying individually.

Its the best way to pray. My focus is just on Allah. I feel like im in another world. It gives me peace/happiness.

I just remembered something. Some Salat are meant to be said out loud. Like Fajir, Maghrib, and Isha. If you have a family which is not praying, this can serve as a constant reminder to them that they should pray. All Athan and Iqama is said out loud. If you say BOTH before every salah, then there will be a row of Angels praying behind you that stretches as far as the heaven and the earth! Athan and Iqama are exactly what a family away from an Islamic country need to pull them back to Allah.

We were all once weak in belief. Do not take away something which might help save your family.

Just thought of reminding myself and my brothers :)

Peace.

I prefer to pray alone in my room when I'm at home, having people around during praying is annoying. But praying at mosques is ok, but really dont go much anymore.

I once prayed at this Barelhvi masjid in during a brief stop at the town Uthal in Balochistan, the people stared so much that it creeped me out. I wonder what would have happened if it were a Deobandi one.

I really don't care anymore. If I have to pray, I have to pray. If someone thinks I'm showing off then that's solely their own problem because I don't. If I'm travelling and it says "mosque" then I don't hesitate praying there. Inquisitive onlooking Kharijis flee in terror once I'm done and take a look at them. No one has dared say a word to me. It's God's gift I believe.

If I can't have my dose of that special feeling that comes with full concentration and in isolation, I just wait till the next oppurtunity or create one myself.

yes either or, masjid is nice and so is in private, private prayer is different then prayer in congregation because one is more comfortable at home and alone. but each have a benefit alhamdulillah. as for praying around other people well one has to pray when and where ever they can. so important thing is to try to feel comfortable and focus towards Allah no matter where you are or who is around you.

There isn't a mosque where I live so I pray at home and love praying in quiet and isolation. It gives me that spirituality that I need to cope with the overwhilmingly worldly desires, though it is not always possible.
