Pink Chaddis

Indians outraged at an attack on women for drinking in a bar have gathered together to send a provocative gift of underwear to right-wing activists.

More than 5,000 people, including men, have joined the Facebook group, which calls itself the Consortium of Pub-going, Loose and Forward Women.

The group says it will give the pink underwear to Sri Ram Sena (Army of Lord Ram) on Valentine's Day on Saturday.

The Consortium of Pub-going, Loose and Forward Women, which was formed on Facebook last Thursday, has also exhorted women to "walk to the nearest pub and buy a drink" on Valentine's Day.

A spokeswoman for the group, Nisha Susan, told the BBC it was gifting chaddis (Hindi colloquial for underwear) as they alluded to a prominent Hindu right-wing group whose khaki-shorts-wearing cadres were often derisively called "chaddi wallahs" (chaddi wearers).

But our correspondent says that right-wing Hindu vigilante groups loosely linked to the BJP are active in many parts of India and have in the past targeted Muslim and Christian minorities as well as events such as Valentine's Day.

Yup. Once again, women forgetting thr's a fine line b/ween "liberated" and "stuck in days of Ignorance when liberation meant behaving like a prostitute." Ok..it IS a womans' personal choice to go to a pub BUT...to be joining a group that labels you "loose, fast etc"- that's like putting up a sign that says " I'ma skank" on ur foreahead and only a VERY complex-struck woman would do it. It's like joining a group labelled "United skanks fo the world"- u'd expect only teenagers to join. Furthermore, you know what I like abt our Eastern society? AT LEAST WE KNOW WHO OUR FATHERS ARE!!!! Whats' the diff b/ween our society and Western? In our society, no matter how much money you have, your NOBODY unless your parents are legally married, your mother is a proper lady, and your fam tree is good. Hope these "pink chaddi activist" dont ruin that. Seriously, it's really funny how, in the name of liberation, women actually go backwards and do the absurd?????

I think this highlights the fact that the issue of gender relations/rights is one that affects all societies.

It's a shame that the champions of modesty in India are also fascists.

It would have been better for women's groups to flag up that today's Consortium of Pub-going, Loose and Forward Women are promoting activities that will diminish the importance of families in society and lead to a variety of social problems - many of which will lead to increased problems for women.
