Sadr City Opens Parks, Sports Complex printButton.png emailButton.png Sunday, 18 January 2009 By Sgt. Zach Mott
4th Infantry Division SADR CITY — As rockets crashed down in central Baghdad nine months ago, Special Groups criminals controlled the areas here intended for play and athletics.
But today, the children were back at play in northeast Baghdad as local government leaders opened the Faoo Family Park and the Regular 6 Sports Complex.
The facilities, which were once used by Special Groups to launch deadly attacks against the fortified Green Zone, were celebrated, Jan. 17, for being returned to the citizens as well as the military accomplishment of seizing the land back from the criminals.
“This park is for all the people to use it and all the families inside Sadr City,” said Sheikh Jamar Shahan, who runs the public workers in the Sadr City District. “It’s a joint venture between the Iraqi government, all the Sheikhs, and the support of the U.S. Army and U.S. Government.”
The two separate projects, which each cost nearly $500,000 to complete, are a landmark event for the Iraqi people in this once forgotten district. These projects symbolize a return to normalcy not known here since the days before Saddam Hussein ruled this land.
“We can see the happiness in the eyes of the children. We are proud of our job and we are proud to be a part of this team,” said Buad Abdul Sadr, the senior engineer in charge of refurbishing the park and sports complex.
The park, which boasts swing sets, a playground, benches and other childhood leisure activities, is a place for children to spend their free time.
The sports complex, which hosted its first event moments after the ceremonial ribbon was cut, is a place where future Iraqi National Team hopefuls will hone their skills on the soccer field, and in the weight and wrestling rooms.
“It’s very good and it’s very beautiful. We’re going to use it every day. We want to be on the Iraqi National Team,” said Majid Kareeb, a boy from the Sadr City District who attended each event.
Regular 6 Sports Complex is so named after Lt. Col. Brian Eifler, a Farmington Hills, Mich., native, who commands Task Force 1-6, Multi-National Division – Baghdad. Eifler commanded the American troops responsible for reclaiming this land as well as the improvements made there following the defeat of the Special Groups criminals.

Baghdad Greets First European Passenger Flight in 18 Years

16 January 2009 ( Monday Morning )

The first passenger flight from Europe in 18 years landed at Baghdad International Airport early this month when a Swedish charter aircraft touched down.

The Nordic Leisure airliner brought in 150 people, most of them Iraqis, resuming air links between Iraq and Europe for the first time since the United Nations imposed sanctions on Iraq after Saddam Hussein’s 1990 invasion of Kuwait.

More international flights are expected in the coming days, including one from Hong Kong, Iraqi Transport Minister Amer Ismail told reporters at the airport.

The pilot waved the Swedish flag as he was bringing the MD-83 (McDonnell Douglas) plane to halt on the tarmac of the airport.

Late last month, Air France-KLM and Iraq’s Transport Ministry signed a preliminary accord which will see Iraqi Airways taking off for European destinations and Baghdad airport being renovated.

In the aftermath of the 1991 Gulf War, the state-owned Iraqi Airways was hit hard by UN sanctions imposed against Iraq and its service declined rapidly.

After the invasion in 2003, the airline slowly resumed flights and today the national carrier flies to the regional capitals and major cities of Amman, Beirut, Teheran, Cairo, Istanbul, Damascus and Dubai.

The Iraqi government in May 2008 ordered 30 Boeing 737 commercial airplanes in an agreement worth up to 2.2 billion dollars.

The pictures are really nice!

The most important achievement for Iraqis will be the implementation of 'social justice'. They were denied that for decades.

The government and powerful groups in charge, such as central government, Mahdi Army, Kurdistan movements, Sunni groups should try their best to bring social justice and treat the citizens equally and rightfully and fight corruptions with any mean and with any prize!

btw: Do you have pictures from Karbala, around Imam Imam Hussain's shrine? I heard they'll design and bring some changes around the areas...!

Iraqi conductor Karim Kanaan Wasfi and the Iraqi Philharmonic Orchestra performed at the National Theater in Baghdad. The classical performance took place in the late afternoon due to security concerns in holding evening performances. This year, 2008, some nine classical performances have taken place at the national theater, five more than in 2007. The mixed orchestra boosted its oldest violin player at 60-years-old and their youngest female cellist at 14-years-old.

Iraqi students enter Baghdad University, as an Iraqi soldier keeps watch. The decision by some women to shun the Islamic head cover, or hijab, is just one of the signs that Baghdad residents are growing increasingly confident in the past year's security gains.

Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini looks at relief work along with Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari (unseen) during a visit to the National Museum in the capital Baghdad. Frattini urged the Iraqi government to protect minorities, namely Christians, after a wave of killings, during a surprise visit to Baghdad. Frattini also said, "We will continue to help Iraq restore its archeological treasures which are part of the world's cultural heritage."

A Canadian firm is to build 5,000 housing units in the religious city of Karbala, provincial officials said.

The Investment Commission in the city has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Canadian firm, they added.

The spokesman for the commission, Raid al-Asali, said the project, the largest in the city, will be constructed on an area of 1.1 square meters in Karbala outskirts.

Asali gave no figure on the cost. However, he said the cost of the project would be determined once its designs and economic feasibility studies are completed.

The project will include health clinics, schools, tourist facilities and other public amenities, he added.

Water-Purification Plant Opens In Baghdad

January 23, 2009

BAGHDAD -- U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Ryan Crocker has christened a $56 million water-purification plant in the eastern part of Baghdad.

Baghdad government spokesman Hakim Abdul-Zahra told RFE/RL’s Radio Free Iraq that the plant will meet the daily needs of some 200,000 residents of restive Sadr City, where U.S.-backed Iraqi forces and the Imam Al-Mahdi Army Shi'ite militia clashed last spring.

The two-year project was commissioned by the U.S. Agency for International Development and built by a local contractor with technical help from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Sadr City residents protected workers and machinery during construction, project manager Khalid Hassan told Radio Free Iraq.

I fail to see how much of this is good news at all. Particularly the following:

43100562.jpg

What's so great about this? Didn't women also get educated under Saddam Hussein? Where is the massive change? The only difference between then and now is that now it's portrayed as a freedom bestowed upon the Iraqis by an enlightened American occupation. The caption reads:

Iraqi students enter Baghdad University, as an Iraqi soldier keeps watch. The decision by some women to shun the Islamic head cover, or hijab, is just one of the signs that Baghdad residents are growing increasingly confident in the past year's security gains.

LA Times are more happy about the fact that some women have shunned the Hijab (we will forget that they need a military escort to do this, for now) than whether or not they are receiving any better an education now than under Saddam.

43189185.jpg

I wonder what sort of people in Iraq are going to be attending symphonies at a time when carbombs are still going off in major towns and cities. Personally I don't think this represents anymore a positive change in Iraq than if they were to start showing Les Miserable to a group of 5 people under army escort.

081205b11.jpg

And here we see a list of all the companies that will be raping your resources and workers for the next few decades...

090101b10.jpg

I wonder if he knows any fellow Iraqi soldiers who have been shot in apparent 'friendly fire' incidents by the coalition?

1hjgfjhgsjgfjhf.jpg

Images like this one tell us absolutely nothing about progress in Iraq.

I'd like to add that a few of these images are genuinely inspiring, and I pray that my Iraqi brothers and sisters prosper after so many years of torture under Saddam. But seriously - to attribute an image of Maliki as being 'hopefull news' is seriously wrong.

This thread is a great idea sister, keep up the good work with your updates guys. Don't pay attention to those who pretend to support the interests of Iraq while disfavouring the good news and shunning any glimer of hope. While only the miserable news is focused on it's important not to overlook any hopeful signs as these are the causes for optimism and change in attitude.

Mods: I second the request to make this a sticky thread. Thanks in advance.

This thread is for hopeful news abt Iraq. If you wish to proclaim your self-righetous stance please do so on another thread Iqra and muntadher.

Oh whatever. I'm so sick and tired of this whole Iraqi eliteism about Iraqi politics - nobody without a drop of pure, Arab blood has the right to discuss Iraq other than you chosen few apparently. I pointed out that the majority of pictures and stories in this thread are hardly good news, mostly speculative and have nothing to do with the everyday reality of life in Iraq. If you have a problem with that, fine, do whatever the hell you like. Stick your fingers in your ears and go lalalalalalala for all your life for all I care. Here's another picture which goes with the collection:

Discuss Iraq all you like, no one is stopping you. But don't dictate to Iraqis and act as if you know what is in their interest. Everyday life in Iraq IS better: better security, better amenities....and this thread highlights this. If you want to beat the drums of doom open up a new thread and indulge yourself.

Excuse me? What makes you such an authority on what is progressive development and what isn't? You don't need to be an Iraqi to understand that speculative diagrams and blueprints don't count as good news. Furthermore, much of this thread has been dedicated to advertising multinational corporations who DEFINITELY do not have Iraq as their concern.

Everyday life in Iraq IS better: better security,

Estimated Insurgency Strength, Nov 2003 - 15,000

Estimated Insurgency Strength, Oct 2006 - 20,000 - 30,000

Estimated Insurgency Strength, June 2007 - 70,000

Furthermore, I have had the misfortune of having to console a friend of mine who has had almost half of his family slaughtered by a death-squad in one day. So don't tell me that Iraqis are any safer now that the BBC and Fox News choose not to cover these issues - because they are happening.

....and this thread highlights this. If you want to beat the drums of doom open up a new thread and indulge yourself.

I take no pleasure out of the misfortunes of the Iraqi people. Furthermore, if you want to see 'doom and gloom', look at 99% of the other topics and posts in this section. In the interest of unity however, I won't post in this thread anymore. I just wanted to voice my concern of Iraqis falling victim to Western propaganda about the war and occupation.

They are happening, ofcourse. All our great ''neighbours'' are playing a dirty game in Iraq and supporting terrorists to kill innocent Iraqis. But that doesnt mean that Iraq IS improving, not just with rebuilding but the same goes for security. We are not saying that because of the ''Western propaganda'' but because we HEAR that from family members who LIVE in Iraq and we see that when we visit Iraq. Less people are getting killed, less car bombs etc but we just need time and have patience.

And ofcourse those Multinational companies do not have Iraq as their concern but that doesnt mean we should stop rebuilding the country. This is the case in the WHOLE world. They want to make money and we want our country to be rebuild and our people to have work.

InshAllah Iraq will improve more and more so all of us Iraqis can return to our country.

Salams

Official: New initiative for Iraqi students

BAGHDAD – A new initiative between Iraqi and American universities will increase academic cooperation between the two countries, an Iraqi official announced Thursday.

Abed Theyab, the minister of higher education, said seven Iraqi university presidents will travel to the United States next month to attend the American Council on Education's national conference and meet with senior education officials.

Theyab said the goal of this visit is to establish dialogue and links between American and Iraqi universities.

"We don't want to see tanks and weapons (in Iraq), instead there will be a scholarly exchange," Theyab told reporters at a joint press conference with the U.S. Embassy counselor for public affairs, Adam Ereli.

Theyab said the initiative will include more money for Fulbright scholarships so that Iraqi students can study in the U.S., as well as student exchange programs.

The university presidents will visit North Carolina State University, Ohio State University, and Texas A&M University.

Iraq has a rich history of academia, which has suffered since the U.S.-led invasion of 2003. Many professors were assassinated and students dropped out of classes for fear of violence and kidnapping.

Iraq to Issue First Bonds post-Saddam

  • addthis_pub = 'iraqupdates';

Baghdad, 29 January 2009 ( Reuters )

Iraq will soon issue its first new government bonds since the fall of dictator Saddam Hussain for $5bn, Finance Minister Bayan Jabor said yesterday.

“For the first time, we will soon issue government treasury bonds, worth about $5bn,” Jabor told a banking conference in Baghdad.

“These bonds will be guaranteed by the government of Iraq through the huge assets Iraq owns, which reach tens of billions of dollars, guaranteed by limitless crude and gas reserves, guaranteed by the promising Iraqi economy.”

He did not give a specific time frame to issue the debt.

Iraq, which gets nearly all its revenues from oil exports, had a large budget surplus in 2008 when oil prices were high, but faces a deficit in 2009 despite revising its spending plans down to $62bn from $80bn as oil prices fall.

The government is in need of funds to pay for investment, not least to boost oil exports and increase future revenues.

Although about $66bn of the country’s Saddam-era debt has been forgiven, it still owes billions to its Arab neighbours, some of which it disputes.

ID1b to maintain oldest water pipeline in Karbala

January 29, 2009 - 05:15:50

KARBALA / Aswat al-Iraq: A local company in Karbala on Thursday embarked on implementing a project to maintain the oldest drinking water pipeline in the holy city at a cost of 1.1 billion Iraqi dinars (ID), equal to $984,000, according to the governor of Karbala.

“Some bad parts within the line that links Karbala to Ayn al-Tamr district, (85 km) west of the province, will be replaced,” Oqeil al-Khazaali told Aswat al-Iraq news agency, adding the project will take up to six months to finish.

“The new pipelines will be ductile and with a diameter of 600 millimeters,” he said.

The Shiite province of Karbala lies 110 km southwest of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: A project to establish a huge water storage tank at a cost of $46 million U.S. dollars has been referred to three Iraqi and French companies.

“The tank, which has a capacity of 96,000 cubic meters, will be completed within 26 months,” according to a statement released by Baghdad’s Secretariat and received by Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

The project will help reduce the shortage of drinking water in Sadr city and al-Shaab area, the statement explained.
