Salam all,

I have a few questions for people who might have some clue or answers ...

1. When did the Jafri branch of the syeds arrive in India/Pakistan? And more importantly where did they arrive from?

2. Why do we use terms like Jafri, Zaidi, Naqvi, etc? When did this come into use? Why not just syed abc. Seems like this usage is common among the shias, however, there are some sunni jafri, zaidis etc. But, I really want to know why we use these names at the end of our names.

3. I know that there is a group of Sunni syeds, sons of Ali Uraydi who was the son of Jafar as Sadiq, that migrated from Baghdad to Yemen to escape persecution from the Abbasi rulers. They settled in Tarim, Yemen. From there they spread to parts of East Africa, Malaysia/Indonesia/Brunei, and Kerala, South India. Today they are mostly followers of the Shafi fiqh of Sunnis. So are the Jafri's also the sons of Ali Uraydi? I ask this because Imam Jafar as Sadiq had more sons ... which son do the Jafris descend from? Or descendants of all sons are Jafri?

I would really appreciate a response from someone :) ... especially if you are a Jafri with access to your family tree. In case you have access to the faimly tree could you look up to find which son of Imam Jafar as Sadiq you descend from. I unfortunately do not have my faimly tree so can't find out.

Asalaamu Alaikum! Brother, are you actual Chisti, not the Sufi one but that this is your family-group from Pakistan? Can you give me any more information about Chisti-family (and it's names, ancestry). Sorry I can't contact you via PM because you can't use it yet :/

And more importantly where did they arrive from?

There is actually a research on the credibility of these claims that was being done (from perspective of genetics). I haven't seen much progress on it though :/

1. When did the Jafri branch of the syeds arrive in India/Pakistan? And more importantly where did they arrive from?

Syeds from different parts of Arabia and Greater Persia moved to India during the Muslim rule. Some of them fled religious/political persecution but most moved due to economic reasons. [india was huge and wealthy] History, so far as I know, does not give any clear dates and a particular place(s), that when and where they emigrated from. Generally, most of the Shia who migrated to India hailed from Persia, Afghanistan and the rest of Central Asia with few emigrating directly from Arab.

2. Why do we use terms like Jafri, Zaidi, Naqvi, etc? When did this come into use? Why not just syed abc. Seems like this usage is common among the shias, however, there are some sunni jafri, zaidis etc. But, I really want to know why we use these names at the end of our names/

I don't know when but the current nomenclature and categorisation of Syeds, common at least in India/Pakistan, into Rizvis, Jaafris, Zaidis, Naqvis etc is done after the name of the first infallible their family tree goes back to. So those who have Imam Ali Reza as the first infallible in their family tree are called Rizvis. They can also be called Kazmis because Imam Ali Raza was Imam Musa Kazim's son. Rizvi syeds prefer to be called Rizvis and not Kazmis because the first infallible in their line of ancestry, in ascending order, is Imam Ali Reza not Imam Musa Kazim.

Although Rizvis can also be called Kazmis but Kazmis cannot be called Rizvis [unless they are descendents of Imam Ali Reza - and IF they ARE descendants of Imam Ali Reza, they wouldn't be called Kazmis at the first place.] A bit confusing I know. LOL :D

In the same way, Naqvis can also be called Rizvis, Kazmis, Jaafris, Zaidis, Hussainins [not Hassanis] but the Zaidis, Jaafris, Kazmis cannot be called Rizvis and Naqvis etc. Hassanis are either Hassanis or Alawi Syeds. They can't be called anything else coz Imam Hassan's line of descendants is completely different from the Hussainis.

3. I know that there is a group of Sunni syeds, sons of Ali Uraydi who was the son of Jafar as Sadiq, that migrated from Baghdad to Yemen to escape persecution from the Abbasi rulers. There are many Sunni syeds. The main reason for their Sunni madhab is primarily the taqqiyah of their ancestors which became a kind of habit. This on-the-face apparent Sunnism under Taqqiyah was then taken up by their children as a true madhab. This is the most plausible explanation. However, there have been instances in history where some Syeds have converted from Shi'ism to Sunnism proper.

I would really appreciate a response from someone :) ... especially if you are a Jafri with access to your family tree. I am not a Syed but by grandma was. She was Rizvi Syed and her great grandparents emigrated from the outskirts of Kandahar to Amritsar due to economic reasons some 150-170 years ago . After the partition of India, they moved to Quetta where they had some property.

Hope that helps.

Take care

Could you provide CREDIBLE information about any other son of Imam al RiDa (a.s.) besides the next Imam?

On that note, I have no information either why a lot of Rizvis call themselves so, instead of taking on the title of Taqvi, my own family included. I can only take a guess.

Yeah, i think it is difficult to group the arrival of Syeds in one era ... Abdullah Shah Gazi of Karachi is said to have been buried there 1000 years ago. They say he came into that region escaping the ummayads ... he is one of the most respected Sufis in Pakistan. I guess the migration took place throughout the 1000 years.

I know about the usage of Zaidis, Jafris etc ... Even Syeds who don't have last names ending with one of the names (naqvi etc), still will write that in their family tree. For instance a friend of mine has a family tree which mentions that they are Naqvi syeds but they don't have that anywhere in their names.

I think a geneaologist would be better able to answer such things ... unfortunately it is difficult to get access to one :)

Thanks a lot everyone for the responses.

I just wanted to know because I don't know very much about one side of my own family :)

REgarding that research ... there isn't much interest i think, and I asked some syed scholars too, they think they have no need to get involved because those who are syeds have their family trees with them - so whats the point ... at least that is their opionion. But it would have been nice to come up with a genetic record of Syeds.

I think the reason the research is important is because there has been cases where the "tree" papers were fabricated.

1) There is the obvious power reason which you mentioned above, and I don't think that it's speciifc to the 12er Shia. Apparently, the current Agha Khan also claims to the a descendant of Alee RadiAllahanhu.

2) Ibn Batuta is quoted by orientalists in saying that when he went to India, Arabs were held in high esteem and were given the title 'Sayyid'.

3) I'm not too sure about this one, but I've heard that back in the day in Hind if you lived in the same apartment building as a famous Alawi, you and everyone else in the apartment would get the Alawi title by people.

4) People fake the lineage of the leaders of their groups. I remember reading in Dr Saleh's Dispraise of Al Hawa that followers of the Teejani tariqah claim that the latter was a descendant of the Messenger (SallAllahu'alaihaiwassalam) despite the fact that historians like Ad Dhahabee, and As Subkee did not mention this at all their biographies of Al Teejani.

salam bro,

thanks for the info. The line of Jafri syeds you mention is the one that migrated primarily to Hadramawt, Yemen escaping the persecution of the Abbasis and interestingly enough to escape the spread of Shia tendencies in Baghdad. I know quite a lot about the Ba'alawis. They trace their lineage to Imam Jafar as Sadiq and have had an unbroken line of scholarship since then. I know that they migrated and spread Islam in Indonesia and Malaysia, and even South India like Malabar. The Jafri's in those parts are certainly related to the Ba'Alawis of Yemen. But, I doubt that the Jafri's in Northern India are directly related to Imam Jafar as Sadiq's son Isa Muhajir who migrated to Yemen.

Actually the Jafari's in Northern India, especially the Sunni ones from the particular area I 'hail' from are descendants of syed badiuddin zinda shah madar, a Sufi descendant of Imam Jafar as Sadiq who arrived from Syria.

Wa salam bro - if you are referring to Syed Jalaluddin Surkh Posh Bukhari, which I think you are then his descendants (Shia and Sunni) are all Naqvi syeds. Here is a link, not sure how reliable it is, but it details the Naqvi Syed ancestors in India. Maybe this Syed Jallaluddin is a different person.

There is a place in gujrat, pakistan called madina syedan, its mainly populated by jafri syeds. thier forefather syed nizam-u-din talambi came to talamb near multan pakistan about 500 years ago, he descended from muhammad bin ali areez bin imam jafer sadiq(as) and he settled on land near gujrat that was personally given to him by mughal king. His descedents still occupy that area till today. but one of my freinds from there said that most people there are false syeds and except a few but that town is populated by shias mainly. The nature of those people is war-like and that area is pretty dangerous.

2. Why do we use terms like Jafri, Zaidi, Naqvi, etc? When did this come into use? Why not just syed abc. Seems like this usage is common among the shias, however, there are some sunni jafri, zaidis etc. But, I really want to know why we use these names at the end of our names.

Usage of surnames like Jafri, Rizvi became more popular after partition. On both sides of the border, many descendents of Imams crossed paths for the first time and came to live together with others in larger cities. So to differentiate, they began using appropriate titles derived from the Imam their lineage joined with. These titles existed way before, but were not used as much. I have barely heard of people born before the partition who used these surnames. They just used "Syed" in the beginning.

those are just my observations though.

wa salam. It is sunnatullah (i.e. tradition of God) that He appoints twelve successors for certain Prophets and there emerges a tribe-community from each of these successors.

"We split them up into twelve tribes, and We revealed to Moses, when his people asked him for water, [saying], ‘Strike the rock with your staff,’ whereat twelve fountains gushed forth from it. Every tribe came to know its drinking-place. And We shaded them with clouds, and We sent down to them manna and quails: ‘Eat of the good things We have provided you.’... Quran 7:160

Slam i am a jafari syed from the lineage of Ali oraidhi whose grand son moved to khuwarzim and their my forefathers moved to pakistan we are also known as khuwarzmi sadat. Majority of us settled in villages in gujrat like medina syedan, momdi pur syed, and jamal pur syedan. I have a family tree compiled by my grandfather in 1940. It has a short history about jafari sadaat and where they settled around the world. Most jafari sadat are shia but there are some sunni as well mainly because of taqqiyah i think.

Imam Ali Reza (as) only had one son Imam Mohamed Taqi. It is reported that the majority of of Taqvi Syeds call them self Rizvi because it is reported that Imam Mohammed Taqi asked his descendents to do that so that his fathers name didn't die out. I don't know whether this is apocryphal or true .

The Jafri Aredhi Khwarizmi Sadaat in Gujrat:

My forefather Syed Abdullah Khwarizmi Multani entered Multan during Sultan Mehmud Ghaznavid´s rule 1 millennia ago. His descendants are mostly located in Gujrat via his descendant Syed Nizamuddin Talambi "Zahir Wali" who settled in Kurree Sharif (tomb: Head Marala, Chenab river western bank) in the early 1400s on the invitation of Maharaja Jasrath Khokhar (d. 1442). Prominent Jafri towns are Madina Syedan (founded in 1500s), Jamalpur Syedan (founded in 1658) and Mohinuddinpur Syedan (founded in 1500s). Offshots can be found in Jhelum, Taxila, Muzaffarabad. The 20th century saw a migration to Europe and North-America.

Syed Abdullah Khwarizmi Multani bin Muhammad Khwarizmi bin Ali Mastan e Haq Khwarizmi, bin Muhammad Khwarizmi bin Abdullah Misri bin Hassan Baghdadi bin Muhammad Baghdadi bin Ali al-Aredhi bin Imam Jafar al-Sadiq.

With kind regards,

Yasser Shah. Stavanger, Norway

Hi,

Is there anyone who can confirm whether the genealogy of the Sayyids settled in Agra, India, traces back to Ali al-Uraidi ibn Ja'far or Ishaq ibn Ja'far, particularly considering the presence of both Shia and Sunni lineages within these families?

Assalaamu alaikum, I have recently found out my great great was actually a syed as well the British clerks spelled Syed as Said from a passport from 1894 but the names I see here are very different compared to mine. We are Ba Jafar’s (باجعفر). My great great grandfather migrated from Yemen, Mukalla and from there they migrated to India specifically Jamnagar as the passport say my great grand father Mubarak bin Syed Mahomed was born in Jamnagar. From Jamnagar in 1920s they migrated to Kenya Mombasa. My grandfather and grandmother were born in kenya and migrated to the UK in the 1970’s our family have always been known as Ba Jafar. I’m just digging up more information about my Ba Jafar linage and Assalaamu alaikum to all Bani Jafar’s Shia or Sunni we are family.
