"The Howard, a heavily armed guided missile destroyer, was in place to monitor whether Somali pirates began offloading any of the MV Faina's 33 Soviet-type T-72 tanks or their ammunition, a US Navy 5th Fleet spokesman said.

He would not say what action was being planned to stop the pirates moving the cargo, which had been en route to Kenya.

A spokesman for the armed group which seized the Ukranian ship and its 25 crew said that the Faina was surrounded by three foreign warships, but he said his men were ready to fight to the death to protect their catch.

Sugule Ali said that the ship would be released on payment of a $20 million (£10.8 million) ransom."

Our Somali brothers have nothing to worry about. The Somali people are to brave to be intimidated.

They call them Pirates, all they are stealing from are Imperialistic forces who are in their waters!

Russia and USA have been violating Somali waters for a long time.

Those damned American getting involved in something that isn't their business again. They are not pirates they are freedom fighters trying to free money from the Ukraine and Russia.

This is a for profit operation. If a Moslem flagged commercial ship sails through these waters they will be attacked as well. In fact, the ship taken was a Moslem ship because like most commercial ships it flies the flag of a country with the lowest tax and insurance rates!

Calling them Moslem brothers is simply ignorant because these pirates are criminals. Who knows what their religion is? Somalia has a number of different religions and the pirates could be a mixture of all of them.

Have you ever been to Somalia? Then you don't know, I've been there and the religion there is:

99.99% Muslim.

And that ship was being sent from Russia to Kenya, to create more violence.

They saved countless children from being killed by criminals.

They are stopping the flow of weapons by super powers to third world countries.

Any other commercial ship in Somali waters is fair game, their water their rules.

Peli, you should read this:

http://www2.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi.../MNU81388D6.DTL

Kenya does not buy its equipment from Russia. As this article points out, it usually buys weapons from Western sources. To suddenly start buying from the Russia causes a parts and ammo supply problem. In battle it to often happens that the wrong size ammo or part is sent forward. If you are using a dozen different types of equipment getting the right size type oil filter to the right unit can be a hair tear head ache. If all your weapons systems are in common you reduce this problem to a manageable size. This article thinks the tanks were ultimately bound for Somalia who uses the Russian battle tanks.

descotek, Islam is the state religion of Somalia. For a Somali to declare himself anything but a Muslim is to put his life in danger. I'm not surprised that its population is identified as anything other then 99% Muslim, but I would say the real percentage is less then that since all the surrounding African Nations have a diversity of religion and the enforced period has not been long enough for all those non-Muslims to have converted. (Though its dangerous environment might have killed all the old people off)

Somalia is another spot for power struggle.

Something is messy there, the recent changes and "ships missing games” going on... First Iranian, now the Ukrainian.

*Russia may try to find excuses as American excuse of "war on terrorism" to boost its military presence there, as they are already exercising in Venezuela.

*Iran may arm some people in Somalia, in case she is attacked to even start in Somalia in response. (It is not the first time Iranians having ties with Somalians, had been in contacts in the past.)

*Somalian government is leaving the country while the Ethiopian military is punished.

What is strange is that a Russian ship is responding to the distress of a Ukrainian ship. The Ukraine is suppose to no longer be a part of the Russian Empire. If a Russian ship boards a Ukrainian ship it give weight to the idea that the Ukraine is a part of Russia. Like I said in a prior post. Those Priates better get any deal they can get before that Russian ship arrives. Russia is very sensitive about its status in the world and what better way to show that she is a player on the world stage then hanging some pirates up on a ships mast.

I have facts and evidence to back my claims, want them? I appreciate it if you know what you're talking about.

They are not 'muscreants' they are muslims defending their waters from being raped by these kufars.

So it is okay for Russia, U.S. and NATO to violate Somali waters because they don't have a government, oh wait they have a government the people support which is the ICU or Islamic Courts Union.

The western world doesn't recognize the ICU because they are a Islamic government.

Wherever an Islamic government appears in the world the kuffars are quick to suppress it, hence the attacks against Somalia when the ICU took over most of Somalia in just months when the country was in civil war for YEARS.

Don't call muslims who you don't know miscreants, as far as I'm concerned THEY ARE NOT THE ONES IN THE RUSSIAN OR USA WATERS so they have ALL RIGHT TO ATTACK and STEAL from any boat, ship or even cruise ship because those ships have no right to violate Somali waters.

Ask yourself this, what the hell are warships from USA and Russia doing in Somali waters?

The cargo is Russian isn't it. This has nothing to do with Islam or a state's sovereinty when these criminals are labeled as pirates they are dead on. Somalia barely has a gov't and these pirates are not a part of it.

Satyaban, I think the crew is partly Russian. From memory the man who died of a heart attack was. I don’t know about the cargo, but probably it is. The Russians like to produce military equipment in the interior of their vast land. They moved the factories back to the Ural mountains during Hitler’s invasion.

They have several reasons make sure they are the ones to end this:

One: They will not receive full payment for the military equipment until it is delivered.

Two: Protecting the sovereignty of a Ukrainian ship lend credence to the Ukraine being in their sphere of influence.

Three: Russian cannot afford to look weak because they are weak. Putin stopped the collapse of the old Soviet Military Structure. He has not had time to reverse that damage. Most Russian ships can not sortie from their docks for lack of replacement parts and a trained crew.

Four: Russian nationals are involved. It not as important as the cold cash, but… the communist government has made some promises to its people they have to give the appearance of making good on it. Oil and military hardware can be turned into bread. When they run out of that the Russian people change their government.

This pirates boarded a ship on the high seas delievering supplies to the Sudan. The Sudan is an Islamic country. The cargo was going to off loaded in Kenya and shipped overland. The pirates being freedom fighters is a complete fiction.

If you go to Wikipidiea, you will see that Kenya has added 33 T72 tanks to its inventory. You can also see when and where this change was made in the Wiki data base. Somebody is interested in miss-information.

Here is a short list of who I think are involved one way or the other.

Sudan

Ukraine

Russia

Kenya

The United States

Entrepreneurial pirates

Entrepreneurial corporations

Entrepreneurial politicians (corrupt)

Islamic propagandist

Western mass media (who refuse to dig deeper)

Sudan has summoned the ambassadors of Kenya and Ethiopia over what it says are illegal deliveries of weapons to the country's semi-autonomous south.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/7669016.stm

hmmm... an America ship of war detaining a delivery of tanks to an anti-Sudan government rebels. That seems counter to its own interest! Maybe the international law of the sea does mean something.

Wow, now this sounds strange.

“A tense standoff has developed in waters off Somalia over an Iranian merchant ship laden with a mysterious cargo that was hijacked by pirates.

Somali pirates suffered skin burns, lost hair and fell gravely ill “within days” of boarding the MV Iran Deyanat. Some of them died.”

http://www.thetimes.co.za/PrintEdition/Art....aspx?id=851953

It does not have to be radioactive materials. Nine men at the local paper mill here died from cleaning of a chemical spill. Their hair fell out as well. Maybe there is some truth to the claim by the pirates that they are protecting the Somali coast from illegal dumping of hazardous waste. China sure has a lot of that.

The Russian Frigate Neustrashimy should be arriving shortly. It has the capability to rake the cargo ship with cannon fire and land 16 highly trained troops from its single helo. That should be more then enough to handle the pirates. If the helo is undamaged, a second trip could land a damage control party to close the sea cocks and repair any damage the pirates might do to the ship once they realize the game is up. I don’t think the pirates have the expertise to rig the ship to sink quickly or defend it from a determined boarding party.

Oh, the ships helo has a 30 mm cannon and a heavy caliber machinegun so when the ships cannon stops pumping shrapnel shells into the top of the cargo vessel the helo can go in and keep the pirates suppressed right up until its troops jump onto the deck. The pirates will have about a five to ten second window of opportunity to engage the boarding party and transport with their small fire before boarding party can employ its weapons. If somebody does not get luck with an RPG, it will be over for the pirates.

The Russian response has been incredibly slow. When the ship was first taken by the pirates a Russian ship from the Baltic fleet then presently in the English Channel was said to be responding. Then a frigate from an independent battle group deploying to train jointly with Columbia was said to be responding. Finally, the Frigate Neustrashimy from the Black Sea’s Fleet was reported to be on its way and was last reported transiting the Suez Canal several days ago. This response is about as slow as the Imperial Russian Navy in 1905 to the Japanese surprise. In fact, the coal fired war ships of that era would have arrived sooner then the present modern Russian navy.

It seems the Russian navy is living up to its fine historical tradition of mediocrity.

The BBC actually had a 2 part series comparing the pirating of 18th century and today.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/document...tes_prog1.shtml

http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/document...tes_prog2.shtml

But these pirates are attacking ships with food aid. Whatever happened to those who were after treasure and gold?
