What Video Game Are You Playing These Days?

Welcome back, Vader.

I recently went to my local electronics store and played a demo of this:

Mario_Kart_8.jpg

First of all, demos have changed a lot since my day. In this demo, you have 8 tracks and around 20 characters to choose from. It feels more like a shareware than it does a demo.

This is the first Mario Kart game I have played since Mario Kart 64. Obviously, in terms of visuals, this is a huge leap. Mario Kart 8 is one of the best-looking games I have ever seen.

As for the gameplay, it is very familiar. It combines racing with vehicular combat. This game has reintroduced the coin system from Super Mario Kart, where collecting coins makes you go faster and getting hit by an opponent's weapons takes away your coins. It has also introduced new items and weapons, with the question marks being skewed towards less unfair weapons. Yes, I think this game is much more "fair" than MK64. MK64 was evil.

Anyway, it's Mario Kart. You know what you're getting into. It's just with new tracks and stunning new visuals. But it's the familiar gameplay that we have all known since childhood.

Dead or Alive 2 for the Dreamcast

If not for the blatant female exploitation of this franchise, this game would be perfection. And this was the last game before the series completely went off the deep end and forgot the fact that it's a fighting game and not a pornography.

It features everything you want: beautiful graphics (to this day), great controls, a wide variety of fighting styles, lots of unlockables.

It's a ton of fun, and quite addictive. I daresay DOA2 is the best 3D fighting game on the Dreamcast (even better than Soul Calibur).

My favorite character is Jann Lee (the Bruce Lee stereotype). I like his moves as well as his overall style and personality. (He's a super-douche.)

Just wanted to add another point about this game: unlike Soul Calibur where the fighters fight on a relatively small ring (although some of them are bigger than others), in DOA2 they fight in some very expansive environments with multiple layers. For example, fighters can get knocked out of windows and into caves and secret rooms and other places. You may have played the game a million times but still have never seen some parts of the levels.

Moreover, interacting with your surroundings is part of the game. There are certain moves you can only perform when you are near a wall. And a lot of the levels have electrified fences that when you hit your opponent into them, they suffer more damage.

So although we can have a discussion as to whether Soul Calibur is better or DOA2, there is no doubt that DOA2 is more impressive.

How's Destiny? Is it only online?

Destiny is like an mmorpg but with shooting. So like Halo and Final Fantasy mixed, but more-so of the Halo. Honestly, it is a solid game. Never played anything like it before. It is only online, but you can do everything solo if you want, as long as someone else doesn't join you on your mission. The maps are full of online players. You might come across maybe 10 different players while doing a mission, so it isn't like WOW where there are probably hundreds of players in a single session.

There's a lot to explore. Many weapons and armor which you can swap out and upgrade. It's a fun experience, definitely look into buying it.

Sonic 1 for the Genesis/Megadrive

After weeks of torturing myself with Super Mario Bros 1, I decided to play a game that actually rewards the player for playing, instead of punishing him.

Sonic 1 is really awesome. It doesn't look quite as good as the later Sonic games, and there is no spindash, but it's perfect. If I had to choose a favorite Sonic game, I would choose either #1 or maybe Sonic & Knuckles (because I love Knuckles).

I recommend to any of you guys to go pick up a Genesis (they are very cheap, trust me) and a copy of the game. Or if you have an X-Box 360, you can buy Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, which contains a bunch of Genesis games. They go for around 10 bucks on ebay. It's a steal.

Found this and it made me think of Darth Vader:

Anyway I'm playing Sonic 2 now. Almost finished with it.

It is definitely a deeper game than the first but whether it's better comes down to taste. Sonic 1 is much more linear whereas the levels in Sonic 2 have many pathways to the goal. (Sonic 1 had some of that, and certainly more than any platformer of its time, but Sonic 2 takes it a further degree). Most people like Sonic 2 better but I think they are more or less equal, at least in how fun they are. The graphics are much more detailed, especially the backgrounds. Sonic has more animations; also, he is smaller. In the first game he takes up the entire screen, it's kind of annoying.

Just as with Sonic 1, most of the levels come down to memorization but there is ONE level that is just stupidly cheap and annoying. In Sonic 1 it's the Labyrinth Zone Act 3. In Sonic 2, it's Metropolis Act 3. I dislike these levels because they are very cheap, especially Metropolis Act 3. The crab, starfish, and praying mantis are the top three most annoying enemies in the entire game and they are all a part of this level.

Sonic 3 is the game I remember being my favorite of the series when I was a kid. (maybe because with the Sonic and Knuckles cart you could play as Knuckles, who I friggin loved). I can't wait to re-explore that one.

This is easily one of the most scariest demos of a game i have ever played in really long time, i am a humongous fan of survival horror's and i can easily say that this demo representing the new silent hill for ps4 is better than most horror games out there and i loved playing every second of this, it was fun, heart wrenching, suspenseful and fear building

I have always been a massive horror games fan who grew up playing games such as Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Dino crisis (first one was considered horror) and so on so forth but personal favorite has always been Silent Hill

Almost finished with Sonic 3.

I like it a lot but it is definitely the most intimidating of all the Sonic games on the Genesis. I think the only reason I liked it more than Sonic 1 and Sonic 2 as a kid was because I was pretty dumb and couldn't get past Zone 2 but I didn't care anyway because I had all of Zone 1 imprinted in my brain and it was enough for me to play through it again and again.

In any case, although the levels in Sonic 2 dwarfed the levels in Sonic 1 and added a lot of different routes to the goal, Sonic 3 makes all of that look like child's play. The levels here are enormous. It would probably take half a dozen playthroughs just to see all of these levels in their entirety. The best thing about this game (aside from Knuckles) is that the little shield power up things (which had existed since Sonic 1) actually do something now. The fire power up lets you launch yourself at your enemies from midair. The water bubble lets you breath while underwater as well as letting you do a "butt bounce" on your enemies (like in Castle of Illusion). The lightning power up is my favorite. It serves as a magnet for nearby rings while also allowing you to double jump.

The level select cheat code in this game is notoriously impossible to execute. Fortunately, there is a save game feature but it only saves after each zone (not every act) and you can only play the last zone that it saved. (Meaning, if you have played until Zone 3, you can only start from Zone 3, not zones 1 and 2). This is very annoying for people who want to replay the game from whatever zone they choose.

In any case, I think I will stand by my childhood assessment. This is the best Sonic game. Most people seem to prefer Sonic 2 but I think for the sheer breadth and scope, Sonic 3 beats it.

Hah. I have nothing against console players. Why would anyone? Its like saying that the rest of the world hates American -people- (and not their govt's foreign policy). Thats just incorrect. Heck, I don't even hate consoles. To me, they're simply irrelevant.
