Imam Al Sadeq (a.s.) said: "The sale of chess is forbidden, [acquiring] its price is unlawful, playing with it is idolatry, to greet one who entertains with it is a grave sin and a serious atrocity, and he who immerses his hand into it (i.e. by touching) is like one who immerses his hands into pig meat; his prayer is not accepted until he washes it just as he would wash it after touching pig meat, and one who looks at it is like who looks at his mother's genitals, greeting a person who is playing with it at the time of playing receives the same punishment as the one playing it, and he who sits in a ]chess playing] session has, indeed, reserved his seat in hell, and his time spent will be regretful.

According to this hadith Chess is forbidden.

Is this also including games like backgammon ?

(bismillah) (salam)

Imam Jafar Sadiq (as) warns:

"Playing chess is polytheism, holding a chess pawn is like touching pork ...

looking at it is as hateful and forbidden as looking at the private parts of one's mother!!!'

Assalamu aleikum Shieflower

About games:

Prophet (s): “All play and games are futile except for three: Horse riding, archery and foreplay with your wife, and these three are correct.”

Wasāil ash-Shī‘a, vol. 20, pg. 118, no. 25186

Can anyone provide this hadith in arabic? Interesting is, that what is the word used for "futile" in arabic.

Fii iman Allah.

There are many narrations which forbid us to play with dice.

I think the word for 'futile' is ÈÇØá.

Buraida reported on the authority of his father that Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) said: He who played chess is like one who dyed his hand with the flesh and blood of swine. Sahih Muslim Book #28, Hadith #5612.

Narrated Uqbah ibn Amir: I heard the Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him) said: Allah, Most High, will cause three persons to enter Paradise for one arrow: The maker when he has a good motive in making it, the one who shoots it, and the one who hands it; so shoot and ride, but your shooting is dearer to me than your riding. Everything with which a man amuses himself is vain except three (things): A man's training of his horse, his playing with his wife, and his shooting with his bow and arrow. If anyone abandons archery after becoming an adept through distaste for it, it is a blessing he has abandoned; or he said: for which he has been ungrateful. Sunan Abu Dawud Book #14, Hadith #2507.

Salams

I have read ahadith of Imams which advise to distance oneself from games such as chess. I think it is mainly due to the reason that Chess has been a favourite game of many cruel Hukamraan (Rulers) of the world. So to avoid playing this game means dissociating ourselves from cruel people and their hobbies. I also believe, this game encourages one to make cunning and deceptive moves.....which is why perhaps it is discouraged by our Imams.

As to the OP's question, actually nard (aka nardsheer) which is mentioned in a number of narrations is actually backgammon, even if in an earlier form of it. It was, and apparently still is, a gambling game.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nard_(game)

ãÍãÏ Èä íÍíì¡ Úä ÃÍãÏ Èä ãÍãÏ¡ Úä ãÚãÑ Èä ÎáÇÏ¡ Úä ÃÈí ÇáÍÓä (Úáíå ÇáÓáÇã) ÞÇá:

ÇáäÑÏ æÇáÔØÑäÌ æÇáÇÑÈÚÉ ÚÔÑ ÈãäÒáÉ æÇÍÏÉ æßá ãÇ ÞæãÑ Úáíå Ýåæ ãíÓÑ.

Muhammad b. Yahya from Ahmad b. Muhammad from Mu`mar b. Khallad from Abu 'l-Hasan (as). He said: Nard and chess (shatranj) and al-`arba`a ashar (fourteen, apparently another game) are of one station, and all that is gambled upon (qumir `alayh), it is gambling (maysir). (sahih from al-Kafi)

Are the authenticity of these hadith foolproof? Not everything from our books is sahih you know...plus I would hate to think that sports for example are not good to partake in? Soccer? Basketball? Tennis? These build your endurance and stamina, and reaction and strength, I can't think that these are bad for you.

The one quoted by Br. Ali Askari in post # 3 is not sahih. It's marfu.

Chess is haraam as per Quraan Chp 5:Verse 90
.
.
IMAM ABU JAFAR [MUHAMMED BAQIR (AS)] said : Shatranj is also from amongst rijz(impurities) and act of shaitaanj

(Ref : Tafseere Ibrahime Qummi , Chp 5 : Verse 90)
.
.
.
IMAM SADIQ (ASWS) said : Adopting Chess is kufr and playing it is shirk and teaching t is greater sin, doing salaam to the one who plays it is also sin, touching it is like touching the flesh of swine (pig) and looking at it is like looking at the private part of ones own mother
(Ref : Man la Yahzahuruhul Faqih - Shiekh Sadooq, Vol 4, Pg 58)

Imam Ja’far Sadiq (a.s.) told Abu Basir:

“It is Harām to sell chess. It is Harām to spend the income of this sale. To keep chess (board and pieces) in ones possession is tantamount to kufr (disbelief). To play chess is equal to ascribing partners to Allah. It is a sin even to salute one who plays chess. One who touches it in order to play it, it is, as if he has contaminated his hands by touching pork.”

“To teach chess to others is also a kind of destructive sin.”

“To teach chess to others is also a kind of destructive sin.”

It  is narrated in Wasaelush Shia. Chapter of Business Transactions,

"The prayers of Chess-players are not valid till they wash their hands after the game. And to watch a game of chess is like looking at the genitals of ones own mother."

IMAM JAFARE SADIQ (ASWS)
on being inquired concerning chess replied:
"Leave the preoccupations of the fire-worshippers to them"
That is, Muslims should not even go near  chess.

May the Almighty ALLAH ÓÈÍÇäå æÊÚÇáì & AHLULBAIT (ASWS) grant us Taufeeq to keep ourself away from such Great sin....
