If I go to a non-Shia mosque to pray and I do not have a turbah is it ok in this instance to pray directly onto the prayer mat? Also if I had a turbah might they not be awkward towards me?

What's required is to do your sajda on something that comes from the earth but is neither wearable nor edible. So, even without a turba you could still use something such a leaf (meaning one that people don't eat), a stone, grass, earth, and so forth so long as they meet the above condition. Even plain paper is fine (as long as it meets the right conditions). That, or you could carry your turbah with you in your pocket. In terms of reactions of others, my suggestion to you is to judge each situation for what it is. If it's a more open atmosphere and folks won't care, that's one thing, if it's a Wahhabi dominated center where you might get accused of bringing an "idol" (a`udhu billah min dhalik) in their ignorance and spite, well that's another. In Makkah for instance, Shi`as in general don't bring their turbahs with them to pray with in Haram (imagine the reaction from the ignorants there). What you'll see a number doing is to prostrate directly on the marble floor past the carpeting. No need to be rustling up trouble for yourself over something like that.

I know your situation, I often find myself in a similar one, the only thing that gives me relief?

remembering that Allah (SWT) is merciful if your heart is in the right place.

(salam) ,

I rechecked on Ayatullah Sistani's website. I couldn't confirm my claim about the prostraton on the nail that I stated earlier but I have heard about that multiple times in the past

Here's thw website, you can find all the rules regarding sajdah on there.

According to Ayatollah Sistani:

1081. At a place where a person has to observe taqayyah (concealing one's faith in dangerous situation) he can perform Sajdah on a carpet, or other similar things, and it is not necessary for him to go elsewhere, or delay the prayers so that he is able to pray freely at that place without taqayyah. But if he finds that he can perform Sajdah on a mat, or any other allowed objects, without any impediment, then he should not perform Sajdah on a carpet or things like it.

1093. If a person does not possess anything on which it is allowed to perform Sajdah, or, even if he possesses such a thing, he cannot perform Sajdah on it due to severe heat or cold, he should perform Sajdah on asphalt or tar, and if that is not possible, on his dress or the back of his hand, or on any thing on which it is not permissible to perform Sajdah optionally. However, in such a situation, the recommended precaution is that as long as it is possible to perform Sajdah on his dress he should not do Sajdah on any other thing.

Here is a link for his ruling of Things on which Sajdah is allowed http://sistani.org/local.php?modules=nav&a...59&pid=2955

I generally carry a turbah with me and use it to pray at university eg where we have a prayer room for all muslims. I have had no negative reaction and can pray side by side with other muslims and its fine. You may feel self-conscious to start with because you are doing something no one else is, but once you are in prayer you dont think about it. As it has been said though, judge the situation and InshaAllah you will have no problems.

Salam sister. Here's something I wrote that will help you inshallah: http://www.islamtutor.com/prayer.php?p=turbah

The thing about the Turbah is that I've used it for over 3 years at university, in front of all the wahabis and sunni types you can imagine and they have never come up to ask me what it is and what I'm doing! As a Shia, a Muslim at university, I have as much right as any other Muslim to worship in the prayer room and to follow my Aqueedah how I like so they can't say 'get out of here'. Fear not sis.

Wow! thank you for that. Great to read and have saved to my laptop for future reference. I am away on an Arabic course next week and will have to pray in congregation so I needed this courage!

One question: I presume it is alright to use a prayer mat as long as I have a turbah on the prayer mat for my forehead? i.e. if the rest of my body is on a nylon prayer mat. or cotton prayer mat?

Re. cotton. It says you cannot prostrate on things you wear, but you can use cotton. Obviously we wear cotton, so am confused by this. Does this mean we can use a small cotton handkerchief to prostrate on?

I'd be grateful for clarification. Meanwhile, I will for sure take my turbah next week along with a lot of courage.

Personally where i go to pray they are very open. Although i appear to be the only Shia there no one minds my Turbah.

But i know this may sound silly, but why exactly do we use one?

If you want to look inconspicuous then why not get a prayer mat made out of straw or palm leaves like a khumra? I used to have this straw mat (it was being sold as a beach mat, but, hey whatever) and it could role up like a purse. It was fairly easy to transport. Or you could just get a khumra.

^As for why we use turbah, go here: http://www.shiachat.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=234928813

You are not doing Taqayyah.

Bring with you earthly rosary beads, made from clay, wood, etc. And use that to do your sajood. If for example some takes away your turba, you can prostate on the back of your hand. But if you life is in danger, then you allowed to do sajood on carpet.

If you don't have beads, use paper.

Sajood is reminder for us that our life here on earth is temporal. We will eventually decompose and return back the the earth before being resurrected.

Dhulfiqar

From what I know, I don't think you can perform sajdah on the back of your hand. However you can perform is on your finger nails. Can anyone please confirm this.

There is no doubt that Sajdah cannot be performed on clothing, edibles, and fingers or back of hand. Sajdahh must be performed on earth, and on those things which are not edible nor worn, and on things which grow from earth (e.g. wood and leaves of trees). It is not permissible to perform Sajdah on things which are used as food or dress (e.g. wheat, barley etc.), or on things which are not considered to be parts of the earth (e.g. gold, silver, etc.). It is permissible to do Sajdah on herbs that are used for medicine but they are boiled and its water is drunk such as some flowers (borage and violet flowers). It is permissible to prostrate on baked lime and gypsum, and brick and pottery clay.

As for paper, if it is made of things on which Sajdah is allowed, there is no problem in doing Sajdah on it. For example, if it is made of wood or chaff, it is permissible to do Sajdah on it. Also, it if is made of cotton, it is permissible to do Sajdah on it but if it is made of silk and the likes of such things, it is not permissible to do Sajdah on it. As for tissue, it is permissible to do Sajdah on it only when it clear that it is made of things on which Sajdah is allowed. The best thing on which Sajdah can be done is the turbat of the Chief of Martyrs (Imam Hussein) followed by normal earth, stone and then plants or herbs. And in the situation of helplessness, asphalt and tar will have preference over other non-allowable things. If it is not possible to do Sajdah on allowable things, it is permissible to do Sajdah on your clothes or anything which is not permissible in ordinary circumstances (when one acts of his own free will). However, the obligatory precaution is that in the latter case, one should not do Sajdah on anything else when one has access to his clothes.

I don't know why you think it's awkward to pray on turbah in a sunni mosque. Someone here mentioned doing sujdah on back of hand. Is it correct? Did you ask a Shaykh?

I pray everyday in a 99.99% sunni prayer room (I'm the only Shia). I'm very comfortable doing my prays there and I never had a problem. I pray just like religion says on a turbah.

Bring a leaf or anything else natural that's not living.

Or....

Just bring a turbah, it may be awkward but it will stop over time.

Salam.

I am looking for someone who is willing to use AQIL but not emotions.

Who is here to convince me that Turba is not an Idol.

Please I don’t care about your feelings but I would respect those who know how to intellect

Once you reflect on these questions using intellect, it should hopefully answer your own question:

Do you worship the Ka'baa when you face its direction in salah?

Do you worship your tassled, patterned, Turkish or Chinese factory mass-produced prayer rug simply by prostrating on it?

If facing the Ka'baa and prostrating on your prayer rug are not considered idol worshipping, then prostrating on Earth (which is what the Prophet saw actually did) should also not be considered idol worship.

Now, can you convince us, that we are idol worshipping a small piece of Earth?

Doing sujood on turbah and doing sujood to turbah is like a difference between earth and sky. I think this single statement should be enough to anyone with common sense to explain it's not a idol worship.

Every Muslim pray facing the kaaba... But does that mean we are worshipping kaaba?NO!

We are worshipping Allah while facing the kaaba

Blaming shia for idol worship because turbah is as same as kafir tricks(They say we muslim are also worshipping stone by facing kaaba)

I'm sorry if I said anything wrong while explaining I hope u got ur answer.
