Wasalaam Mufti we are not of the ahluls sunnah we follow maraja and our scholars of the school of ahlul bayt.

It is Haraam.

Question :

What is the ruling on playing chess using the commonly known equipment? Is the ruling different if the play is conducted on a computer, using symbols? Answer :

Playing chess is haraam mutlaqan (absolutely or under any circumstances), even though betting is not used. There is no difference between the two methods of play.

Source: The official website of Grand Ayatollah al-Uzma Seyyid Ali al-Sistani

some say yes and some say no because the haram element is no longer what it is normally used for. Edited by Maitham

Chess is haraam as per Quraan Chp 5:Verse 90

IMAM ABU JAFAR [MUHAMMED BAQIR (AS)] said : Shatranj is also from amongst rijz(impurities) and act of shaitaanj

(Ref : Tafseere Ibrahime Qummi , Chp 5 : Verse 90)

IMAM SADIQ (ASWS) said : Adopting Chess is kufr and playing it is shirk and teaching t is greater sin, doing salaam to the one who plays it is also sin, touching it is like touching the flesh of swine (pig) and looking at it is like looking at the private part of ones own mother
(Ref : Man la Yahzahuruhul Faqih - Shiekh Sadooq, Vol 4, Pg 58)

Conclusion 1.)

Allah (SWT) aur AHLEBAIT ( ASWS ) ke saaf saaf haraam kiye huwe chess ko jaez keh raha hai wo puri shia qaum ko haraam ki taraf le jaa raha hai

Conclusion 2.)

Chess kufr hai jo chess ko jaez kahe wo kufr phailaa raha hai

Conclusion 3.)

Chess shirk hai jo chess ko jaez keh raha hai wo shirk phailaa raha hai

Allah ( SWT ) aur AHLEBAIT ( ASWS ) ke haraam ko jaez kehnewale par laanat beshumaarr

Imam Ja’far Sadiq (a.s.) told Abu Basir:

“It is Harām to sell chess. It is Harām to spend the income of this sale. To keep chess (board and pieces) in ones possession is tantamount to kufr (disbelief). To play chess is equal to ascribing partners to Allah. It is a sin even to salute one who plays chess. One who touches it in order to play it, it is, as if he has contaminated his hands by touching pork.”

“To teach chess to others is also a kind of destructive sin.”
