Of course those who want to cast india into the US's image (or that of even china with its fascistic policies) will hate this action. They might miss having walmarts around, but I'm sure india will never give in to the corporatism that masquerades as a democracy here..

Lucknow: The chief minister of India's most populous state on Thursday ordered the closure of 10 supermarkets run by Reliance Industries, in a blow for attempts to modernise the country's mostly fragmented $350 billion retail industry.

The order from the Uttar Pradesh state chief came after protests this week by small traders and some political activists against the opening of the Reliance Fresh stores, which are modern, air-conditioned supermarkets.

"I have constituted a high-level committee to review the whole affair and until the committee gives a green signal, Reliance Fresh stores will remain shut," said chief minister Mayawati,.

Mayawati said the stores were closed due to law and order problems.

The closure will include the 10 Reliance stories inaugurated this week in the state capital Lucknow as well as five supermarkets from another Indian retail chain, Spencer's.

New supermarkets have become a lightning rod for fears that India's rapid modernisation will destroy the livelihoods of millions of Indians who work in street markets or small shops.

A senior Reliance company official said that the closure "came as a shock to us."

great. now people can pay more and have less selection, so a handful of people can have their nostalgia for the old poor starving india.

]

and the US is nothing like India. we don't have a caste system where certain people are forced to work in toilets because of who they are and where they were born.

if anything, it shows india's strength to overcome disadvantages that the US doesn't have, yet we don't see leaders like Mayawati here who can protect the common man from a runaway corporatism (mind you she is NOT a commie)..

Mayawati doesnt want to protect the common man she just wants to protect her vote bank which mainly comes from the backward castes...The only thing she does while in power is to steal billions of Rupees from the state and build parks, statues of Dr Ambedkar late leader of backward castes..

If only you see the amount of wastage in the supply chain and storage in the "chota mota" mom and pop stores you would not say so.

But it is easy to stick to idealism and not go into the details. Because the devil is truly in the details.

The mom and pop stores suffer from huge inefficiencies in procurement, transportation, storage etc. They have almost no quality control and the sector is totally unorganised. Child labor is rampant. Spurious and adulterated products find their way to customers.

Nobody is talking about walmart. The govt does not allow direct investment from retail companies dealing with more than one product. So walmart has tied up with an Indian company (Bharati, I think). The company the article talks about is Reliance, a fully homegrown company.

I am in India now and I have shopped in Fresh and I like it.

You can't stop growth. Protectionism has to go away. License Raj, anyone?

When Indians take jobs from Americans and when Americans complain, we fondly say that "Oh this is how things will be, we are more efficient at this than you, so don't complain and don't be protectionist". When it comes to Indian jobs, we cannot turn around and whine.

To become a developed country, there cannot be huge unorganized sectors anymore. That is the way of the future and it is better that people start embracing change to avoid becoming relics.
