(salam) brothers & sisters,

I will be going for a holiday for 3 days, I would like to know the prayer method that I shall follow during my stay away from home

Looking forward to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's ruling, couldn't find it on his official website, found the method for those who have travelled for work or education, just wanted to make sure if same applies for a tourist

Jaza'akum Allah

how many miles is considered b4 Qasr namaz is valid?

Eight farsakh.

A traveller should reduce the Rak'ats in Zuhr, Asr and Isha prayers, that is, he should perform two Rak'ats instead of four, subject to the following eight conditions:

* The first condition is that his journey is not less than 8 farsakh . A farsakh in shariah is a little less than 51/2 kilometres. (When converted into miles, 8 farsakh is equal to 28 miles approximately).

1281. * If the total of outward journey and return journey is 8 farsakh, even if the single journey either way does not equal 4 farsakh, he should shorten his prayers. Therefore, if his outward journey is 3 farsakh, and his return is 5 farsakh, or vice versa, he should offer shortened prayers, that is, of two Rak'ats.

The conditions in order to shorten your salah:

-is that the journey is not less than 28 miles, approximately

-to stay at the place for less than 10 days

-is that the purpose of travelling should not be haraam

-is that travelling should not be your profession(your job is to travel)

^ Yup, it must be not less than 28 miles (round trip), if it is 28 miles or more (or at least have an intention that you will travel for 28 miles) than you are considered a musafer. You pray qasar once you are out of your city limit and once you have the intention that your round trip will take 28 miles (8 farsakh) or more.

This is what Ayatullah Sistani says, I dont know about the others.

Let's read what the Koran says. You will realize that the true purpose for the "shortening" of the salat is being completely overlooked:

æÅÐÇ ÖÑÈÊã Ýí ÇáÃÑÖ ÝáíÓ Úáíßã ÌäÇÍ Ãä ÊÞÕÑæÇ ãä ÇáÕáæÉ Åä ÎÝÊã Ãä íÝÊäßã ÇáÐíä ßÝÑæÇ Åä ÇáßÝÑíä ßÇäæÇ áßã ÚÏæÇ ãÈíäÇ

æÅÐÇ ßäÊ Ýíåã ÝÃÞãÊ áåã ÇáÕáæÉ ÝáÊÞã ØÇÆÝÉ ãäåã ãÚß æáíÃÎÐæÇ ÃÓáÍÊåã ÝÅÐÇ ÓÌÏæÇ ÝáíßæäæÇ ãä æÑÇÆßã æáÊÃÊ ØÇÆÝÉ ÃÎÑì áã íÕáæÇ ÝáíÕáæÇ ãÚß æáíÃÎÐæÇ ÍÐÑåã æÃÓáÍÊåã æÏ ÇáÐíä ßÝÑæÇ áæ ÊÛÝáæä Úä ÃÓáÍÊßã æÃãÊÚÊßã Ýíãíáæä Úáíßã ãíáÉ æÍÏÉ æáÇ ÌäÇÍ Úáíßã Åä ßÇä Èßã ÃÐì ãä ãØÑ Ãæ ßäÊã ãÑÖì Ãä ÊÖÚæÇ ÃÓáÍÊßã æÎÐæÇ ÍÐÑßã Åä Çááå ÃÚÏ ááßÝÑíä ÚÐÇÈÇ ãåíäÇ

{ And if you go forth (travel) in the land, then there is no error upon you that you shorten from the "salat", if you fear that the disbelievers will try you. The disbelievers are to you a clear enemy.

And if you (Muhamad) are with them and you hold the "salat" for them, then let a group from amongst them stand with you and let them bring their weapons; and when they have prostrated then let them stand guard from behind; and let a group who has not yet conducted the salat come and perform it with you, and let them be wary and let them bring their weapons with them. The rejecters hope that you would neglect your weapons and goods so they can come upon you in one blow. There is no error upon you if you are impeded by rainfall, or if you are ill, that you place down your weapons. And be wary. God has prepared for the rejecters a humiliating retribution.}

[4:101,102]

If we pay close attention to the verses, especially the underlined parts, we see that they are not talking about just any kind of travel. They do not even mention a distance, because distance is not the main point!!

What the verses are talking about is a travel that poses danger to the beleivers (such that when they are passing through enemy territories).

Verse 102, which is no longer applicable today since the prophet is no longer alive, is giving an example of how the beleivers should take precautions to guard themselves when they are passing through enemy territories and the time for "salat" comes. They should conduct the "salat" in shifts.

The first group conducts is while the second group stands behind them to guard them. When they are finished, they switch. Verses are very clear and self-explanatory.

Note what it says:

"....The rejecters hope that you would neglect your weapons and goods so they can come upon you in one blow...."

This is why there should be a group guarding them, in case they are attacked while they are physically prostrating.

So it's not not just ANY kind of travel, but only travel that somehow poses danger to the one performing "salat". As you can see, from the begining of verse 4:101.

{And if you go forth in the land, then there is no error upon you that you shorten from the Connection, if you fear that the disbelievers will try you....}

As for the theory of traveling 28 miles, it just doesn't hold water. Nowadays we have air-conditioned cars that can travel the distance in like 20 minutes!!! We have safe highways and security (unless you're in Iraq  )

Am I to beleive that if I am going 28 miles in my Mustang to visit a friend on the weekend that I must "shorten" my salat???

You are missing the point.

Furthermore, it is not obligatory, God is only giving us a license to shorten it, because He does not want to cause us hardship. The phrase " ....then there is no error upon you that you shorten from the "salat"...,"

clearly means that it is a license, not a must.

Contemplate on this.

Salams.

You're right. If he travels to another country and intends to stay for less than 10 days(and he's a tourist), then he prays qassir (the 4 rakaat prayers become 2 rakaat). If he intends to stay more than 10 days then he prays the normal prayer rakaat.

What if you travel WHILE you're travelling. Say I travel to Karbala, stay there for 12 days. Then I go visit Najaf for 5 days. Would I have to pray qasir in Najaf?

Yes, since you are staying there for less than 10 days.

Ahh, then the time I visited Iraq for 30 days I should have prayed all of them qasir because I was constantly jumping from province to province.
