Harry Potter: Facts about Fiction

By Khalid Baig

Posted: 21 Rabi-u-Thani 1424, 21 June 2003

As expected there was much frenzy around the latest Harry Potter book. Bookstores and clubs around the world arranged special midnight parties and other events in celebration of the launching of the long-awaited fifth book in the series. A grandiose countdown was held in Times Square for the coming of the fifth book.

The book was set to break many old records. Online bookseller Amazon had already received one million pre-orders of the new book, its largest pre-order ever. Scholastic, the American publisher had ordered 8.5 million copies as the largest first printing ever. Worldwide, 13 million copies of the book had rolled off the presses in a massive print run.

The other books in the Harry Potter series have been translated into more than 55 languages, including Urdu, Persian, and Turkish. Nearly 200 million copies of the first four books have been sold in 200 countries.

What is all this craze about?

The series chronicles the growing up of a young orphan wizard named Harry Potter who attends a secret magic boarding school called Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Harry is a very unique wizard. His parents are killed while he is a baby by a wicked powerful wizard named Voldemort, but generally called "you-know-who" or "he-who-must-not-be-named". Voldemort fails in his attempt to kill Harry and instead is nearly destroyed when his magic rebounds on him. Harry is left with a lightning shaped scar on his forehead.

Harry is sent to live with his "muggle" (non-magical people) relatives for the next ten years. He lives a miserable life, tormented by his aunt and uncle and his spoiled cousin. They attempt to keep him from knowing that he is a wizard.

Then, suddenly a letter arrives from Hogwarts on his eleventh birthday, changing his life completely. Harry finds out he is a wizard and rather famous for his encounter with the evil lord Voldemort. Despite opposition from his aunt and uncle, Harry goes to the wizard boarding school where he meets new people, including his best friends Ron and Hermione. Harry discovers that he has both admirers and enemies.

Each book details the events of one school year.

The main characters in the story have few noble qualities; they lie with impunity, use profanity, don't respect their elders, break rules regularly, and are unrepentant.

While the books are characterized by most people as innocent fantasy and entertainment, they contain many evil messages - not all of which are subtle.

The books glorify magic and sorcery. Harry and his classmates regularly cast spells, brew potions, learn to tell the future, communicate with the spirits of the dead, train magical animals, and ride brooms. They study astrology, crystal gazing, numerology, transfiguration, and divination. Darker things occur as well such as murder, human sacrifice, drinking of unicorn blood, etc. The fight between good and evil in this book is actually a conflict between "good magic" and "evil magic", both of which are evil.

The books are in effect promoters of paganism. They glorify magic and paganism while non-magical people, called Muggles, are despised and portrayed as boring, narrow-minded, and paranoid of magic.

Not surprisingly, the main characters in the story have few noble qualities; they lie with impunity, use profanity, don't respect their elders, break rules regularly, and are unrepentant.

And for all these qualities and more, the books are popular and are having an effect. It is the "in" thing to purchase the book. And not just the book. Children have gone crazy over Harry Potter memorabilia, surrounding themselves with Harry Potter T-shirts, posters, toys, costumes, wands, hats, etc.

The media has been glorifying the book that glorifies sorcery.

Welcome to the world of capitalism and paganism, where superstitions and the occult reign supreme in the hearts and minds of people, and where the twin forces have forged an "alliance of the willing" that is doing its "magic" on a global scale.

Capitalism is all about maximization of profits and if that requires appealing to the lowest instincts and the darkest recesses of human nature, so be it. Millions of dollars have been spent on advertising the latest craze on billboards, buttons, bumper stickers, and posters etc. U.S. publisher Scholastic alone has planned a $4 million marketing budget for this single book - among the largest advertising budgets ever for a book.

The media machine --- equally adept at political, cultural, and commercial propaganda --- has been doing its part faithfully, paying a great deal of attention to the smallest events relating to the coming of the fifth book. It has been glorifying the book that glorifies sorcery.

Even if it were innocent entertainment (which it is not) the extreme devotion would be unjustified. But this culture is given to extremes and incidents of mass craziness are nothing new in it. The cabbage patch dolls craze in the 1980s was similar to current craze over the Harry Potter books. The Cabbage Patch Dolls were the fad of the 1980s. The most distinctive feature about them was that each doll looked a bit different from others and came with its own unique name and birthday, "adoption papers," and a "birth certificate." Marketing gimmick and television coverage combined to make sales explode starting in 1983. Chartered planes were used to bring the dolls from the overseas manufacturing plants to meet the ever increasing demand. Fist fights among eager customers often broke out in retail stores when a shipment of dolls arrived. In 1985, Coleco posted record sales of $600 million, thanks to their Cabbage Patch Kids.

When life has no higher purpose, entertainment and fun become the over-riding goal in life. When there is no belief in or clear concept of God as Creator and Master of the universe, superstition, sorcery, and the occult become fascinating.

When life has no higher purpose, entertainment and fun become the over-riding goal in life.

It is a reflection on the state of the society that there has been scarce opposition to this series that promises to become darker with each new release.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Role of Muslims

In this current state of hysteria, Muslims should have played an important role in opposing this book and exposing the flaws of this culture. It is the duty of Muslims to guide the world, rather than blindly follow the ignorant masses. The Qur'an commands us in Surah Al-Kahf, "And don't obey any whose heart We have permitted to neglect the remembrance of Us, one who follows his own desires, whose case has gone beyond all bounds." [Al-Kahf 18:28]

Yet, unfortunately, we find very little opposition or reflection from Muslims, many of whom have chosen to blindly follow the pop culture. Many Muslims have assured themselves that the books are harmless fiction. Others even claim them to be beneficial because they encourage reading. Reading what? It does not occur to them to ask that question.

Islam prohibits both pointless entertainment (lahw) and sorcery. But countless Muslims seem to be unaware of that. And they are the ones fascinated by Harry Potter.

Salaam,

Anyone remember the "Worst Witch" series? She was a lovable albeit inadept little witch, and so would that mean we'd all want to turn witches too? How about Sabrina the Witch?

I've read the Harry Potter books, and though the magic may be 'descriptive', I've seen the same in other books, Ronald Dhal's "The Witches". C. S. Lewis's "Narnia" series.

Narnia in fact talks of Arsalan (the lion) and the creation of the World. Why no protest over that? Here the role of "God" as a "Creator" hasn't been challenged as in the book just described.

Why the Harry Potter books? What about Violent Movies and Computer Game where maiming and killing earn you bonuses? At least (so far) the Harry Potter book comes down to good vs. evil.

Children will come across a lot in this world taht's now growing darker. Reading something like this could be a great starting point to talk about the subject, to give our children an Islamic perspective towards Magis.

Asalaamu Alaikum :)

Oh my...... Pagan?? I think not!!

The books are in effect promoters of paganism. They glorify magic and paganism while non-magical people, called Muggles, are despised and portrayed as boring, narrow-minded, and paranoid of magic.

The books are NOT promoters of paganism. This guy writing the article OBVIOUSLY has not read the books. Every year, Hogwarts celebrates Christmas. I know we (Muslims) do not celebrate Christmas, but Christians do. And now I know some of you will go on to say "It has pagan origins"...... But Christians and Jews are still people of the book..... and in the books, there are Muslim characters too.... Ali Bashir (I think that was his name) and Hasan Mustafa (the Quidditch World Cup referree).....

Not surprisingly, the main characters in the story have few noble qualities; they lie with impunity, use profanity, don't respect their elders, break rules regularly, and are unrepentant.

Why doesn't this guy take notice of the qualities that can be praised? Harry, Ron and Hermione are very loyal to one another. And it is when they are in danger they are required to lie and break rules......

This guy needs to read HP before he goes criticizing it. I could say a lot more, but I am upset.......

Yet, unfortunately, we find very little opposition or reflection from Muslims, many of whom have chosen to blindly follow the pop culture. Many Muslims have assured themselves that the books are harmless fiction.

Why should Muslims oppose the book? There is nothing wrong with reading HP. It's not like Muslims who read HP go around practising sorcery..... Honestly, what nonsense. As long as a Muslim is fulfilling his/her Islamic duties to gain knowledge and spread Islam, etc etc etc, then there is absolutely nothing wrong with him/her to read for enjoyment's sake.

I certainly hope that Muslims don't publically oppose Harry Potter. In my opinion, Muslims already are stigmatized in this world, why stigmatize us even more? We will all appear to be fanatics who are against anything and everything that doesn't have to do with Islam.

Anyway, That's all from me :)

Take care, ma'Salaama

I own all the harry potter book and actually bought 2 for my siblings. I dont consider myself a fan of harry potter because most of the time i read books or magz which contains facts

Saw both harry potter movie and now attempting to read Goblet of fire -kind of slow.

I think they is a lot of creativity in hp books in terms of inventions and how they adapt modern means and technology to their wizard and witch era. Also, they do have some wacky rules (which are kind of ingenious) and it really does make you think (creatively). The flow of the story is very smooth and I find that very admirable. It is not easy to make kids in this day and age sit down and read books.

Also the chracters have lot of noble qualities - such as Harry Potter's concern about Dobie the house elf, about slavery, Hermoine is especially concerned about justice - and she is being discriminated against because of her birth - it is also anti-monarchy -in someways -and for the "common person" and does not do well for those who believe in "blue blood" etc. -

The books are wonderful , and the are very imaginative - there is nothing even pagan about the book - there is no "worship" of idols, or dieties, - if it is anything, it is neutral, and encourages respect for all peoples including Muggles.

Schools in Australia Ban Harry Potter Books

http://www.news.com.au/common/story_page/0...255E421,00.html

HARRY Potter books have been banned from the libraries of five Tasmanian Christian schools.

"We don't want to expose our students to witchcraft," executive director of Christian Schools Tasmania Neil Rowcroft said yesterday.

"We promote books in keeping with the Christian faith."

Principal Bert Langerak said the books wrongly portrayed and promoted witchcraft as normal.

"As Christians, witchcraft and the occult are considered evil, and it has been widely publicised that many children have tried to cast spells as a result of reading the books, and that is not a view we want held," he said.

The banning was condemned by the national Children's Book Council, which said the school had overlooked many of the books' positive themes.

"What they are doing is banning it on only one aspect of the story, rather than looking at it inthe whole, including all the really good aspects of the book," Victorian vice-president Bronwen Bennett said.

She said the stories of Harry Potter and his friends at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry focused on friendship and loyalty, imagination and admitting when you had made a mistake.

"There's a heap of real positives in there that they are not taking advantage of," said Ms Bennett.

Mr Langerak, who has read one of the books, said the decision not to stock the boy wizard series in the school's library was made by librarians who regularly screened books for their suitability.

"As a mature reader I cansee the difference between fantasy and reality but some children cannot and this is where it becomes dangerous," he said.

However, Mr Rowcroft said it was up to the individual families to decide what their children read.

"We are about education from a Christian viewpoint," he said.

Education Department acting deputy secretary of schools and colleges Kevin Fagan said he was not aware of any schools that had banned the books.

"The books have been a really good thing," he said.

"They have been very positive in the way they have promoted reading."

WARNING: DON'T READ IF U HAVENT READ THE BOOK

I don't know if you asked this already, because I was too busy to read the book when you lot were talking about it so I avoided all the topics incase I accidently read the ending... anyways what did you guys think? Was is good/bad/ better/ worse?

Personally I thought it wasn't wow-good throughout most of it, I mean it wasn't like harry potter material, JKR had Harry's character abit mixed up especially at the beginning where he loses his temper a little too easily 9he got so annoying I wanted to slap him <_< ) but I think the last few chapters were class :D Especially that chapter about Snapes worst enemy!!!!! Omg, I think its so good that Harry's dad was evil, I mena it adds so much more interest to the book and its so funny how Lily cusses him :!!!: but I thought he was too mean to Snape- I mean no wonder he hates Harry so much- if he thinks he's anything like James...

But Snapes still a bandar, especially since he called Lily a mudblood :o

I guess I was really happy that that cow cho didn't end up with him, I mean all she did was cry  but it is quite sad that Sirius is dead, but I think his death could have been abit more dramatic rather than him just falling through a curtain lol- but its quite sad int hat mirror bit...

But I prefer the Goblet of Fire, but I still think she's done a good job :)
