From what I have heard, it was a sword brought from heaven by Hazrat Jibraeel after nine of Imam Ali’s (as) swords were broken in the battle of Ohud. It had two blades and was said to be magical in the sense that it would not allow itself to be used to kill an innocent person, in combination ofcourse with Imam Ali's (as) wisdom that could distinguish between those who were and weren't innocent (even 40 generations down the line).

Hope that helps,

Wasalam

I've read that it was taken as war booty during the Battle of Badr, and the Prophet gave it to 'Ali (as).

In the detailed speech which Ali delivered for "Ra's al-Yahud" in the presence of a group of his own companions he refers to his sacrifices in these words: "....When the army of Quraysh attacked us like one single force the Ansar and the Muhajirs proceeded to their homes and I sustained seventy wounds defending the Prophet". Then he (Ali) drew aside his garment and pointed out the places where the signs of the wounds were still present.[352] Moreover, as recorded in 'Ilalush Shara'i'[353] Ali, while defending the Prophet, exhibited so much valour and self-sacrifice that his sword broke into two. The Prophet then gave him his own sword named Zulfiqar and with this sword he continued jihad in the path of Allah.

So it would have been taken as war booty during the Battle of Badr, by the Prophet, who gave it to 'Ali (as) during the Battle of Uhud.

Salaam Alaikum

Let's not yet assume that it was taken as war booty, because this is not mentioned in the hadith presented on this site.

It appears from the hadith so far that:

-It was given to Imam Ali (as) by the Prophet (pbuh)

-Imam Ali (as) used this in the Battle of Uhud.

The question remains of its origin. I was also under the impression that it had been sent down through the angel Jibraeel.

Also, regarding where it is now, it is said to be with the 12th Imam (as).

i can certainly say that it wasnt "war booty". you got to remember that the sword Zulfiqar, is no ordinary sword and obviously couldnt have been "owned" by anyone else to be taken as war booty.

It wasn't war booty from Badr, it descended from heaven and Jibrail brought it to Ali (a.s) when he was defending the prophet in the battle of Uhud when all had deserted him or been killed while defending him. Ali fought and fought until he used and broke 9 swords with his hands upon which Jibrail brought the Zulfiqar while crying "La fita Illa Ali, La Saif Illa Zulfiqar".

And I also heard it is with Imam Zamana (a.s) and will come out of zuhoor when he does.

I think it is real, since the picture is taken for the book Hadrat Ali r.a., by Prof. Madud-ul-Hasan, Published by Islamic Publications (Pvt) Limited, 13-E Shah Alam Market, Lahore, Pakistan

They didn't mention the source where they keep it, in online source. But I believe they mention the source in hard copy in their reference.

Of course it's not in Turkey. The Dhulfiqar isn't on earth. Where do people get this from!?

Salaam.

Dhu al-Fiqaar or Dhulfiqar... the blessed sword that was gifted to Imam Ali (as) from Allah. Hadrat Jibrail presented the mighty sword during the battle of Uhud to Mawla Ali (as). This sword is now with Imam Mahdi Sahib az-Zamaan (af) and shall be used in his much awaited Zuhuwr. Therefore ofcourse it is not in Misr or any other place, those swords may be old such examples to show what it looked like or maybe even imitations, but certainly not the sword itself.

Dhul means two (as in the edges of the sword), and fiqaar means the backbone.... Dhulfiqar is the double-edged backbone of Islam.

(bismillah)

(salam)

double-edged backbone of Islam brings me a thought what Prophet Muhammed (SAWS) left for muslims, Ahlul-Bayt (as) and Quran and who hold them will be in straight path. :)

No.

"Dhul" is a word that indicates someone's or something's possetion to something. like in prophet "Dhul Qarnayn" (as).. Qarnayn means Two Horns, and Dhul indicates a persons possesion to these, making the name form the sentence: "The one with two Horns."

"Fiqaar" means pointed edges, or something along those lines. it's plural, reffering to the sword's two tips/edges. since "Dhul" indicates possession, and the possessor in this case is the Sword, the phrase "Dhul Fiqaar" means "the sword with the edges".

Also, I heard that no one could lift DhulFiqaar except for Imam Ali (as).

and when imam zamana a.s will reappear

he a.s will brought that sword with him that time he owned that sword

Some people here gave the correct info but still so much confusion.

The sword did come from heaven Jibraeel brought it to Prophet who gave it to Imam Ali in the Uhad. The sword is with Imam Zamana and he will bring it with him soon (inshallah). Jibraeel recited the verse La Fata Illa Ali la Saif il zulfiqar when he brougth it from heaven.

"And We sent down iron in which there lies great force and which has many uses for mankind.... (Surat al-Hadid: 25)

I have a problem with this theory that imam ali did not kill those "innocent people" in battle. People are trying to kill imam ali... i mean i am sure that they would have gotten paid extra if they could have killed Imam ali... he was the biggest target after the prophet. Maybe in a few instances he went after certain individuals rather than others... but i dont agree that he did it with every person he saw in the battle field like many people think.

the sword "zul fiqar" according to hadeeths was brought down, and after Imam Ali's (a.s.) sword broke, the prophet (s.a.w.w.) gave it to Imam Ali (a.s.)

zu in arabic means "the one that has"

fiqar means separated (not literal translation)...

it is reported that it is called zul fiqar because Imam Ali (a.s.) has only hit people that are losers in life and in the hereafter "iftaqara aldunia wal akhera"

(see that fiqar's root is similar to the root of the verb iftaqara)

it is really suspected that any of the swords in the pictures above refer to the real sword, as it is reported to have the words "la fata illa Ali, wala saifa illa zul fiqar" - there is no "warrior" like Ali, nor a sword like zul fiqar (not 100% accurate translation)

it is reported that Imam Hassan (a.s.) carried it over from his father, then Imam Hussein (a.s.) fought in Karbala using it..

it is reported that Imam Mahdi (ajtf) has it and will fight kaffirs using it... (and it makes more sense that the Ahlul Beit (a.s.) has it rather than some islamic museum in Turkey....
