Islamic Revolution Leader: Occupying troops must leave Iraq soon

February 28, 2009

Islamic Revolution Leader Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei told the visiting Iraqi President Jalal Talebani and his accompanying delegation Saturday that the destiny of Iraq has always been important for Iranians and that Iran considers Iraq as an everlasting friend.

“Iran has done its best to ensure Iraq’s security and stability,” the IR Leader said, adding that in the future too, the IRI will do it best in this regard.

Referring to the IRI-Iraq deep relations and their historical, cultural and religious commonalities, Ayatollah Khamenei said the favourable and ample grounds require the two countries to expand their bilateral relations in different fields and pave the way for the implementation of previously-signed mutual agreements.

“With Iraq enjoying rich natural and underground resources, it does not need any financial aid,” the IR Leader said adding however that the Islamic Republic of Iran would offer its experiences and progresses in different fields to the Iraqi brethren.

The IR Leader noted that the cordial Iran-Iraq ties face a slew of purposeful enemies, adding that the two countries should be careful about enemy temptations.

The Islamic Revolution Leader called the presence of American and British soldiers, experts and security forces in Iraq as harmful for the country and called for the quick withdrawal of the occupying troops from Iraq.

“Occupying troops must leave Iraq soon and any day they delay will harm the Iraqi nation,” Ayatollah Khamenei said.

“The occupiers are paving their way to remain in Iraq forever. It would be a big threat,” the IR Leader said warning the Iraqi officials to beware against the risk.

“Iraq’s progress and good is in opposing with the aliens’ desires,” the IR Leader said, adding the aliens were not happy with IRI-Iraq close ties.

Addressing the Iraqi President Jalal Talebani, the IR Leader said “It is expected that you and Prime Minister Mr. Maleki pursue the implementation of the mutual agreements seriously.”

Referring to an IRI-Iraq bilateral agreement on expulsion of MKO terrorist members from Iraq, the Islamic Revolution Leader underlined that the decision should be implemented soon.

“We are waiting for the materialization of the agreement,” he said.

Touching on the EU’s recent measure to remove MKO from its terror list, Ayatollah Khamenei said such a decision proved that the concept of terrorism in the West is an arbitrary issue and has nothing to do with realities.

The IR Leader noted that despite the decision, the Western countries are not willing to accept the terrorists in their territories.

Ayatollah Khamenei then touched on the issue of Iranian prisoners in Iraq, noting that most of the jailed have not violated any law. He called on the Iraqi President to set the stage for the release of the detained Iranian nationals.

Expressing pleasure with the recent successful elections of provisional councils in Iraq, the IR Leader urged the Iraqi government to beware against the Ba’athist elements in the country.

Ayatollah Khamenei expressed hope that by unity and solidarity, the Iraqi nation would find its real independence and shine in the Islamic world.

The Iraqi President for his part expressed gratitude for the supports of the Iranian nation and government and described his negotiations in Tehran as positive and fruitful.

Jalal Talebani said the relations between IRI and Iraq were exemplary and consolidated, adding that any expansion of the ties would further serve the establishment of pace and stability in the region.

“Though some individuals are worried about the expansion of Tehran-Baghdad ties, we consider these relations as fruitful both for our country and the region,” President Talebani noted.

Considering the issue of the terrorist Monafeqin group, Talebani said terrorists are criminals who have also committed many crimes against the Iraqi people. “The Iraqi government is determined to expel them from the country and will fulfill the decision,” he added.

President Talebani then touched on some provocations by the Ba’athist elements inside Iraq. “Unfortunately, some regional countries have failed to cooperate with the Iraqi government in the campaign against the Ba’athist groups,” he regretted.

Meanwhile, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was present in the meeting.

Fourth International Conference for Support of Palestine, the Model of Resistance, and Gaza, the Victim of War Crimes

March 4, 2009

In the Name of God, the All-Beneficent, the All-Merciful.

I welcome you, honoured guests — scholars, thinkers, statesman, and combatants — who have come to the Islamic Republic of Iran to participate in the Fourth Conference for Support of Palestine.

Important and crucial developments have occurred between this and the last meeting held in Tehran during 15-17 Rabi al-Awwal, 1427 AH (April 14-16, 2006). These developments have brightened the future prospects of the issue of Palestine and made clearer our duties concerning this fundamental problem of the Islamic world.

Among these important developments were the amazing military and political defeats inflicted by the Islamic resistance in Lebanon on Israel during the 33-day war in 1427 AH (2006), and the humiliating failure of the Zionist regime in the 22-day long criminal war against the people of Gaza and the legal government of Palestine.

Now this usurper regime — which with its army and weapons backed by the U.S. military and political support flaunted a fearsome and undefeatable facade during the last several decades — has twice been forced to suffer defeat by the forces of resistance fighting with trust in God and the people, rather than reliance on arms and equipment.

Notwithstanding its military exercises, preparations, and far-reaching intelligence outfits, as well as the unsparing support of the United States and some Western governments, along with the collaboration of some hypocrites in the Muslim world, the Zionist regime is faced with incompetence, a steep downfall and dissolution before the powerful wave of Islamic awakening.

On the other hand, the crimes committed by the Zionist criminals during the historic events of Gaza — the genocide of civilians, the destruction of defenceless homes, the impaling of infants, the bombing of schools and mosques, the use of phosphorous bombs and other outlawed weapons; all this following an almost two-year blockade on supplies of food, medicine, fuel and other essentials of life for the people, and numerous other crimes — proved that the savage and criminal instincts of the leaders of the fake Zionist state have not changed in the least since the early decades of the disaster in Palestine. Exactly the same policies and predatory and ruthless motives which created such tragedies as those of Dayr Yasin, Sabra and Shatila still rule the dark minds and hearts of the contemporary tyrants. Of course, the magnitude of such atrocities and their disastrous consequences have been amplified by the advances in technology.

By now those who advocated a “pragmatic” approach under the illusion of the invincibility of the Zionist regime, and who succumbed to surrender and compromise with the usurpers, should have realized their mistake, as well as those who entertained hopes of peaceful coexistence with the Zionists, wrongly believing the second and third generation of Zionist politicians to be free from the criminal impulses of the first.

Firstly, the false image of invincibility was shattered by the wave of Islamic awakening and maturing of the erstwhile sapling of Islamic resistance. The signs of the usurper regime’s weakness and despondency have become fully visible. Secondly, the aggressive character of the ringleaders of that regime and their unscrupulousness in committing atrocities remain unchanged since the early decades. They are not averse to committing any atrocity whatsoever and whenever they think they can do it.

Now 60 years have passed since the occupation of Palestine. During this period all material means of power have been in the service of the usurpers, including money, weapons and technology, as well as political and diplomatic initiatives and the giant empire of news media and networks. Yet despite these staggering and far-reaching satanic efforts, the usurpers and their supporters have not only failed to solve the problem of the Zionist regime’s illegitimacy, but it has grown more complicated with time.

The intolerance shown by the Western and Zionist media and pro-Zionist governments toward even the mere posing of any question concerning the Holocaust — which served as an excuse for the usurpation of Palestine — and research on the topic, is one of the signs of this nervousness and uncertainty.

The image of the Zionist regime in world opinion today is much worse than it has ever been during its black history, and more serious questions are being raised concerning the rationale of its creation.

The spontaneous and unprecedented world-wide protests against this regime and in support of the Islamic resistance in Gaza and Lebanon during the 33-day war, which extended from the Far East to Latin America, and demonstrations in 120 countries including Europe and Britain, the breeding ground of this evil tree, reveal the emergence of a world-wide resistance against Zionism that has never been so serious and extensive in the last 60 years. It may be said that the Islamic resistance in Lebanon and Palestine has succeeded in awakening the world’s conscience.

This is a big lesson, for both the Muslim Ummah and its enemies.

It is a lesson for the enemies, who tried to create a fake and counterfeit nation and state by resorting to force and repression, and to convert it in course of time into an undeniable reality, and to make such an unjust imposition something normal for the Islamic world.

It is also a lesson for the Muslim community, especially the proud youth and their alert conscience, so that they may know that any struggle waged for the restoration of usurped rights is never in vain, and that God’s promise is indeed true when He, the Most High, declares (in the Quran):

“Those who are fought against are permitted [to fight] because they have been wronged, and God is indeed able to help them. — Those who were expelled from their homes unjustly, only because they said, ‘God is our Lord.’ Had not God repulsed the people from one another, ruin would have befallen the monasteries, churches, synagogues and mosques in which God’s Name is mentioned greatly. God will surely help those who help Him. Indeed God is all-strong, all-mighty.” (22:39-40)

And when He, the Most High, says:

“Indeed God does not break His promise.” (3:9)

“God shall never break His promise.” (22:47)

“[This is] a promise of God: God does not break His promise, but most people do not know.” (30:6)

“So do not suppose that God will break His promise to His apostles. Indeed God is all-mighty, avenger.” (14:47)

And what promise can be more categorical than this promise of God,

“God has promised those of you who have faith and do righteous deeds that He will surely make them successors in the earth, just as He made those who were before them successors, and He will surely establish for them their religion which He has approved for them, and that He will surely change their state to security after their fear, while they worship Me, not ascribing any partners to Me. And whoever is ungrateful after that — it is they who are the transgressors.” (24:55)

A big fallacy which has taken control of the minds of some persons concerning the problem of Palestine is that a country named Israel is a 60-year old reality with which one has to reconcile. I do not know why these people do not learn from other realities that are in front of their eyes. Is it not a fact that the countries of the Balkans, Caucasus, and Southwest Asia reclaimed their identity after 80 years of loss, and after being parts of the former Soviet Union? Why cannot Palestine, which is part of the body of the Islamic world, reclaim its Islamic and Arab identity? Why cannot the Palestinian youths, who are among the most astute and resistant of Arab youth, overcome this unjust reality by their will and resolution?

Another big fallacy is to say that negotiation is the only means of deliverance for the Palestinian nation. With whom are these negotiations to be held? With a usurper, misguided and bullying regime which does not believe in anything except force? What have those who have been captivated with this game and delusion achieved?

Firstly, what they obtained from the Zionists in the form of the Palestinian Authority — its humiliating and disgraceful character aside — was at the enormous cost of having to recognize the ownership of the usurper regime over nearly the entire Palestine.

Secondly, even that partial and fake authority was at times trampled underfoot by the Zionists under empty excuses. The siege of Yaser Arafat in his administrative building in Ramallah and numerous forms of humiliation he was made to suffer are not events that can be forgotten.

Thirdly, during Arafat’s days and, especially, after him, they have treated the officials of the autonomous Authority as police-station chiefs whose duty was to prosecute and arrest Palestinian combatants and to keep them under intelligence and police surveillance, thus spreading seeds of enmity among Palestinian groups and prompting them to wage war against one another.

Fourthly, even that puny achievement was the fruit of the struggle of Palestinian combatants and resistance of its proud men and indomitable women. Had the Intefadhah not occurred, the Zionists would not have given them even this little, despite the successive compromises made by the conventional Palestinian leaders.

Or shall it be negotiations with the United States and Britain, who are guilty of the biggest sin in creating and sustaining this cancerous tumor, and who moreover, are one of the parties to the dispute and not arbiters.

The United States government has never ceased its unconditional support for the Zionist regime and its flagrant crimes, such as those committed during the recent events in Gaza.

Even the new American president, who came to office with the slogan of bringing change in the policies of the Bush Administration, avows unconditional commitment to Israel’s security, which means defending state terrorism, defending injustice and oppression, and defending a 22-day-long massacre of hundreds of Palestinian men, women and children. It is a policy which amounts to the same crooked ways of the Bush administration and nothing else.

Negotiations with bodies associated with the United Nations are another exercise in futility. The United Nations has perhaps confronted few tests such as the problem of Palestine, wherein it has been exposed and earned a bad name. It was a day when the Security Council promptly and officially recognized the occupation of Palestine by acquisitive terrorist groups and played a basic role in the birth and continuation of this historic injustice.

After that, for several decades, it maintained a satisfied silence with regard to the cases of genocide, expulsion of refugees, war crimes and various atrocities committed by that regime. Even when the General Assembly voted branding Zionism as a racist ideology, the Security Council not only did not go along but also maintained practically a diametrically opposite stand. The oppressive world powers, which enjoy permanent membership in the Security Council, use this world body as an instrument. As a result, the Security Council not only does not help the cause of world security, but also rallies to the assistance of these powers whenever they deploy notions such as human rights, democracy and the like as pretexts to further their greed and domination, drawing a curtain of deception and lies over their illegitimate actions.

The deliverance of Palestine cannot be obtained through begging from the United Nations or the dominating powers, and more so from the usurper regime. The sole path of its deliverance is through resistance and fortitude, through the unity of purpose of the Palestinians and the word of God’s oneness (tawhid), which is the inexhaustible resource for human struggle.

The pillars of this resistance, on one side, are the combatant Palestinian groups and each and every one of the faithful and resistant Palestinians, those who are within that country as well as those who are abroad.

From another side, the pillars are the world’s Muslim nations and governments, religious scholars, intellectuals, political figures and academicians. If these two pillars remain firmly in their place, there is no doubt that in every part of the world, awakened consciences, hearts and minds which have not been spoiled by the spells of the news media empire belonging to the global arrogance and Zionism, will rally to the assistance of the victims and those who have been denied their rights, forcing imperialism to confront a storm of thoughts, emotions and actions.

We have seen an example of this truth in recent days during the magnificent resistance of Gaza. The sobs in front of the news cameras of a Western chief of one of the international aid organizations, expressions of sympathy by activists belonging to humanitarian organizations, the large and impassioned public demonstrations in the heart of European capitals and American cities, the bold moves made by the heads of several states in Latin America — all these are signs that the non-Muslim world has not yet been fully subjugated by forces of evil and corruption — called ‘Satan’ in the nomenclature of the Quran — and that the ground is still open for truth to manifest itself.

Yes, the resistance and fortitude of the Palestinian combatants and people, together with all-round support and assistance from all Islamic countries, will break the satanic spell of the usurpation of Palestine. The prodigious energies of the Islamic Ummah can solve the problems of the Islamic world, including the urgent and acute issue of Palestine.

Muslim brothers and sisters throughout the world, my message now is addressed to you as well as to all persons with an alert conscience, irrespective of country and creed. Make an effort, and break the spell of impunity for the Zionist criminals. Bring to trial the political and military heads of the usurper regime who have had a role in bringing about the Gaza tragedy, and mete out to them the punishment laid down by reason and justice.

This is the first step to be taken. The political and military leaders of the usurper regime should be brought to trial. If criminals are punished, the room for criminal acts by those who possess the motives and madness to commit them will be restricted. Impunity for perpetrators of great crimes is itself a cause and incentive for further crimes.

If after the 33-day Lebanon war, the Muslim world community had earnestly demanded the punishment of Zionists leaders responsible for the terrible atrocities committed during this war, had this legitimate demand been made following the massacres of wedding processions in Afghanistan, after the atrocities committed by Blackwater mercenaries in Iraq, and following the Abu Ghurayb scandal and other cases involving U. S. soldiers, we would not have witnessed another Karbala in Gaza.

In these cases, we, Muslim states and nations, have not acted in accordance with our duty as dictated by the laws of justice and reason. Its consequence is what we are witnessing today.

It is a matter of deep regret that some governments and world politicians are totally alien to moral values and judgements of human conscience. They are insensitive to the 22-day long genocide in Gaza in which 1350 people were killed and about 5500 civilians were wounded, many of them children. The murderers and criminals are not only not punished, but are even rewarded. The security of the bloodthirsty regime is considered sanctity to be defended at all cost, and the victims, whether it is a government elected by a decisive popular vote or the people who have elected it to office, are accused and condemned. Such is the judgement of political tribunals totally divorced from ethics and alien to conscience and human virtues. Yet, when these governments encounter public opinion in the form of a deep hatred, instead of noting its obvious cause, they again resort to political manoeuvres, thus continuing the vicious circle.

Dear brothers and sisters throughout the Islamic world! Let us learn from experience.

Our great community, with the boon of the Islamic awakening, possesses tremendous power. The key to the solution of many of the problems of the Muslim countries lies in the resoluteness and solidarity of this wonderful galaxy. The question of Palestine is the most urgent problem of the Islamic world.

At times some people are heard to say that Palestine is an Arab problem. What does that mean? If it means that there is a stronger feeling of consanguinity among the Arabs, who are willing to offer Palestine a greater service and do more struggle for its sake, that is something desirable and we welcome it. But if it means that the heads of some Arab countries should refuse to pay any heed to the cries of help of the Palestinian people which are addressed to all Muslims, if it means that they may collaborate with the ruthless usurper enemy in such an important case as the tragedy of Gaza while loudly condemning others who cannot remain indifferent to their call of duty to help Gaza — then no proud and conscientious Muslim or Arab will accept it, nor spare the speaker of disapproval and reproach. It is the same as the logic of Akhzam, who used to beat his father and chide others for interfering. After him, his son would assault the grandfather with his fists. The fable is the source of an Arabic proverb. (Which means: My sons have left me covered with blood, a custom that I know was laid down by Akhzam)

Offering a multi-faceted assistance to the people of Palestine and complete support is a joint duty of all Muslims. The governments which criticize the Islamic Republic of Iran and some other Muslim countries for assisting Palestine should come forward to bear the burden of such support so that others are relieved of this Islamic duty. But if they lack the ability and courage to do so, instead of criticism and causing hindrance, they should appreciate the dutiful and courageous steps taken by others.

Respected audience! You who are present at this conference are thinkers and specialists about the problem of Palestine. Today our historical duty is not to repeat the bland statements and torpid theories of the past, but to suggest approaches for liberating Palestine from the oppression of the Zionist regime.

Our proposal is a solution which is in total agreement with democracy and can form a common logical basis. That proposal is that all those who have a legitimate stake in the territory of Palestine, including Muslims, Christians and Jews should choose their own system of government in a general referendum. All Palestinians who have borne for years the ordeals of exile should also participate in this referendum.

The Western world should know that non-acceptance of this solution will imply an absence of commitment to democracy, which it always claims to support. The failure to pass this test will further expose its double standards. Palestine was also the focus of an earlier test, when the West didn’t want to accept the result of elections in the West bank and Gaza which brought the Hamas government into office. Those who accept democracy so long as it results in achieving their aims are war-mongering adventurers. If they talk about peace, it is nothing but lies and deception.

The reconstruction of Gaza is one of the most urgent problems of Palestine. The Hamas government — which was elected by a decisive majority of the Palestinians and whose epical resistance, which saddled the Zionist regime with defeat, is the brightest page in Palestinian history of the last hundred years — should be at the centre of all reconstruction efforts. It will be appropriate for the Egyptian brothers to open the way for aid to move in and allow Muslim countries and nations to carry out their duty in this regard.

In conclusion, I honour the memory of the martyrs of the 22-day war. With their blood they made the Palestinian Gaza a matter of pride for Islam and Arabs. I implore God’s mercy and forgiveness for them. In addition, I invoke His blessings for all the martyrs of Palestine, Lebanon, Iraq and Afghanistan and for all martyrs of Islam, as well as for the pure spirit of our magnificent leader, the late Imam Khomeini.

I beseech God, the Most High, to exalt the honour of Islam and Muslims, to bring Muslim nations closer to one another, and bring a daily increasing awakening to the Islamic world.

May Peace and God’s mercy and His blessings be upon you.

Islamic Revolution Leader: White House goals have remained intact

March 4, 2009

Islamic Revolution Leader Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei told visiting Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri on Wednesday evening that Lebanon had changed into the heart of the Middle East region.

Referring to the current situation in the region after the two important victories of the Resistance Movements in Gaza and Lebanon, the IR Leader called the victory of the Gazans in the 22-day war against the Zionist regime a result of the Islamic Resistance Movement’s victory in 33-day war in Lebanon.

“Imposition of pressures on Lebanon is a sign of its significant status in the region,” the IR Leader said adding the current regional equation indicated that the efforts made by American, Zionist regime and their supporters were doomed to failure.

“We would be able to overcome the enemies’ soft and hard conspiracies through relying on God and with unity and foresight,” IR Leader said.

Ayatollah Khamenei warned that despite a change of approaches in the White House, the same goals were still pursued by Washington as before.

For his part, the Lebanese official delivered a report over Lebanon’s developments and said the current situation in the region had been affected by the 33-day war in Lebanon and the 22-day war in the Gaza.

“After the defeat of the Zionist regime in the military field, the battle was shifted to the diplomatic field,” he added.

“By hindering the Gaza reconstruction, America and the Zionist regime are trying to make people pessimistic about the legal government of Palestine,” he said adding, “But they never gain the goal.”

Meanwhile, IRI Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani was present in the meeting.

Pointing to some problems in the country, the IR Leader said during the past thirty years the incredible progress of the nation proved that the nation and government move in the right path with unity in social, intellectual and emotional fields and could solve any problem in this regard.

The IR Leader advised to apply all efforts for settling the problems and said that some dirty and negative views are seeking to desperate the people and block the country and people from endeavour and progress.

Meeting the Iranian authorities and people in the birthday of the Last Messenger of Allah

March 15, 2009

Islamic Revolution Leader Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei said the primary undertaking of followers of the Messenger was to make diligent efforts to enhance Islamic unity and counter against agents of discord.

Islamic Revolution Leader Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei described the birth of the Last Messenger of Allah as a fateful event for the path of humanity.

Ayatollah Khamenei made the remarks in a meeting attended by Iranian authorities and people as well as guests of the 22nd international conference of Islamic unity held in Tehran this week.

Ayatollah Khamenei said the primary undertaking of followers of the Messenger was to make diligent efforts to enhance Islamic unity and counter against agents of discord.

Ayatollah Khamenei touched on several meaningful events which coincided his birthday, adding that the events symbolically connoted that the birth ushered in the era of efforts to dismantle paganism, atheism, materialism and oppression in the world.

“Though the guidance of the noblest Messenger (pbuh) has yet to be followed by all human beings however the ever lightening flame will gradually guide human being to headspring of light and would eventually reach out to the world over,” Ayatollah Khamenei said.

The Islamic Revolution Leader said the mankind was blessed by the birth, adding that an undertaking for the Islamic Ummah especially taking into account the great blessing was to pursue unity and take practical actions in this regard.

The IR Leader said the unity would help resolve many of the problems of the Islamic world and bring it grandeur.

Touching on the current status of Muslims and Islamic countries as well as the ill intentions of superpowers to domineer the community, Ayatollah Khamenei said only by unity the Muslims could counter against the bully intentions.

Ayatollah Khamenei then outlined fanaticism regarding beliefs and thoughts as a source of Muslim discords, adding that holding faith in principles and fundamentals was appreciable but the faith must not deviate into denial of other Muslims followed by aggression and enmity.

Ayatollah Khamenei urged Shi’i and Sunni people to respect the thoughts and beliefs of one another, adding that scholarly debates about creed and denominations was allowed as long as they do not turn into slanders or slurs among the public opinion.

Ayatollah Khamenei then outlined the divisive efforts of enemies of Islam and domineering superpowers as another source of discord among the Muslims, urging Muslims to keep vigilance not to be entrapped with the malicious plots.

The Islamic Revolution Leader regretted that in some occasions, some Muslims or Islamic countries have played into the hand of enemies.

Ayatollah Khamenei then recalled the victory of regional resistance in the 33-day Lebanese war (2006) and the 22-day Gaza war (late 2008), calling the two events as highly instructive.

“Following the two great victories by the faithful Lebanese and Palestinian youths against the equipped and modernized Zionist regime’s army, the enemy raised Shi’i-Sunni issue and pan-Arabism in Lebanon and Palestine respectively in order to remove the sweetness of a unanimity which led to the prideful victories,” the IR Leader noted.

“The Palestinian issue is an Islamic issue, having nothing to do with Arab, non-Arab issues,” Ayatollah Khamenei said, adding that a larger source of discord may come to being given sectarian issues are involved in the world of Islam.

“At this juncture, the undertaking is primarily for the politicians and authorities of the Islamic world to thwart enemy plots,” the IR Leader said.

Ayatollah Khamenei said that the IRI would never mistake the prime source of discord in cases where some individual makes a divisive cry from among the Islamic community.

“We reckon the call as coming from the arrogant superpowers,” Ayatollah Khamenei said, adding that the Muslim authorities must keep guard, and that the ulama and Muslim intellectuals must expose the prime culprits behind divisive efforts.

Ayatollah Khamenei concluded his speech with a word of commemoration for the exalted soul of Imam Khomayni “who raised the call for unity in our era.”

Year of revision to pattern of consumption

March 20, 2009

Islamic Revolution Leader Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei in a New Year Day statement described the new Iranian Year 1388 as a crucial year, adding that in light of the vitality of rationality in consuming the country’s resources, he considers the new Iranian year as the year of revision to pattern of consumption nationwide.

Ayatollah Khamenei in the statement expressed hope the Iranian nation would prevail over any likely problems in the New Year through its faith.

The IR Leader said the Eid-e Norouz (Iranian new year day) had got further glorious after coinciding with the lunar birth anniversary of the Last Messenger of Allah (S) and his descendant Imam Ja’far as-Sadeq (as).

Ayatollah Khamenei congratulated the nation’s populace residing in home or abroad as well as other nations which mark the traditional New Year day on the auspicious holiday and expressed hope that everybody would find the solar Persian year 1388 abundant with prosperity.

Ayatollah Khamenei said the previous Iranian year was an eventful one, commencing with the good news of nuclear advances which indicated the capacity of the nation and its experienced researchers and continuing with the launch to orbit of Omid Satellite which fetched Iran a place among a few countries in possession of the technology.

“These truly magnificent advances helped bring a fresh credibility and grandeur for the Iranian nation,” Ayatollah Khamenei said.

Ayatollah Khamenei then touched on the pre-commissioning phase of Bushehr nuclear power plant late last Iranian year, adding that the world following the event got convinced that no one could block the nuclear advances of the nation.

“Iran’s progress in different scientific and non-scientific fields proved that sanctions are useless and that the nation has a spontaneous growth and is able to foil enemy propagandas and plots by reliance on its hyperactive, honoured youths,” Ayatollah Khamenei said.

Ayatollah Khamenei in another part of the statement touched on the beginning of the eighth term of Parliament and the favourable cooperation among the body and the Administration, hoping that the two would keep cooperation.

Ayatollah Khamenei then pointed to the current big global economic crisis, saying that despite the crisis which began from America and sparked a destructive storm throughout the world and despite a slew of sanctions against the nation, the country’s authorities could largely steer the country out of the colossal wave of problems, adding however that the authorities should keep alert so that the country would maintain and boost pace of progress.

Ayatollah Khamenei was pleased about the levels of “innovation and prosperity” (the theme of the previous year) in the past year, adding however that unlike a preliminary gain on the theme in the year 1387, the nation must pursue the theme seriously until it achieves its deserved status under the auspices of God.

Ayatollah Khamenei then touched on the bungled 22-day war of the Zionist regime against a besieged Gaza and its innocent Palestinians who mounted a robust resistance, adding that the disgraceful defeat of the Zionists developed an invaluable lesson for the world people namely that they could strand against tyrants and overcome them.

Ayatollah described the Year 1388 as a crucial year and invoked the New Year prayers (Oh, The One who changes hearts and states over … change our states over to the best) in saying that the changeover of the state of the Iranian nation to the best required the favour of God while at the same time the nation must note that the favour would not be conferred unless the people strive to overhaul their personal and social living style.

Ayatollah Khamenei then outlined “waste of personal and public resources” as well as unbridled consumption of country’s resources as two scopes of Iranian life which seriously needs some touch of overhaul.

“The dear Islam and every wise man in the world rigorously call for rational and prudent consumption,” Ayatollah Khamenei noted.

The Islamic Revolution Leader at the end his statement said all Iranians especially the authorities and personalities in the New Year must follow the crucial and vital theme of revision of pattern of consumption in every domain so that through a correct and prudent use of resources, a notable aspect of changeover of state to the best would emerge within the nation.

Iran vows response to real US change

Sat, 21 Mar 2009

“If you change your attitude, we will change our attitude,” Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei told US leaders.

The Leader of the Islamic Revolution says the US must change its behaviour after President Barack Obama promised “new beginnings” with Iran.

In a Saturday address in Mashhad, Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei said a mere change in rhetoric is not enough and the White House must demonstrate change in practice.

“They use the slogan of change but in practice no change is seen... We haven’t seen any change,” Ayatollah Khamenei said. “Did you remove the sanctions? Did you stop supporting the Zionist regime? Tell us what you have changed. Change only in words is not enough.”

“Our nation loathes the languages of threats and incentives. But we have no experience with the new president and the new US administration. Thus, we will reserve judgment and will base it on their actions,” the Leader added.

The remarks came a day after US President Barack Obama offered Tehran a “new beginning” to turn back the tide on three decades of mutual animosity.

“For nearly three decades relations between our nations have been strained. But at this holiday we are reminded of the common humanity that binds us together,” President Obama said in an unprecedented Norouz message.

“We seek instead engagement that is honest and grounded in mutual respect,” he added.

The initiative drew praise from the international community with many countries hoping it could pave the way for a US-Iran reconciliation.

Ayatollah Khamenei, however, explained that a mere shift in tone cannot overshadow US support for Israel and sanctions against Iran.

“Avoid an arrogant tone, avoid arrogant behaviour, avoid bullying, do not interfere in any nations affairs,” Ayatollah Khamenei advised the US president.

“If you change your attitude, we will change our attitude,” the Leader affirmed.

Washington and Tehran have had no diplomatic ties for almost three decades. The two states ended all relations in the aftermath of the 1980 US embassy takeover in Tehran.

The IR Leader urged for decrease the gap between the rich and poor in the society for achieving the true justice and said that materializing these causes is difficult but achievable.

Pointing to the message of the new Iranian year to the nation over revising the pattern of consumption Ayatollah Khamenei said that this is a real step towards progress and justice because the disease of wasting would bring many economic, social and cultural problems to the country and threaten the future of the country.

Ayatollah Khamenei termed economizing as optimizing consumption of sources and said that we witness some false manners in this regard in our country which have ruined the balance between production and consumption against production. For example one third of bread and one fifth of water in the country are wasted.

The IR Leader termed revision to pattern of consumption as a religious and rational issue and advised the three branches of the government to adopt practical moves in this regard.

In another part of his address Ayatollah Khamenei pointed to the upcoming presidential elections and said the election is one of the main pillars of the country and said the religious democracy would not be established by words but it needs presence of the people and rational and emotional link between the people and the country’s developments and this goal will not be achieved only through massive and correct elections as well as high turnout of people in the elections.

The IR Leader termed the election as an investment by the nation for a bright future and so every vote is important and would grow this national investment.

Addressing the presidential candidates Ayatollah Khamenei said the elections is not a tool to grab on power but it is a mean for promotion the national strength of the country and warned them of every words which cause the enemy’s greed against the country.

He also underlined for holding a safe election by officials.

Pointing to the Leader’s stance in the elections the IR Leader said there were some rumours in this regard but I have one vote and I would not determine a certain candidate because the people themselves should choose their candidates with their own knowledge.

“Sometimes I defend the government and some persons take false understanding from the issue meanwhile it is my duty to defend the governments which serve the nation more, resist against the arrogance and hit by unfair criticisms and this is not a stance about the elections,” the IR Leader added.

Pointing to America’s atrocities against the Islamic Republic of Iran including seizure of Iranian assets, supporting Saddam in his invasion of Iran which left 300,000 Iranian martyrs and massacre of 300 people in the missile attack against Iranian passenger airplane, Ayatollah Khamenei said “Could the Iranian nation forget these tragedies?”

Touching on the imposed sanctions on IRI during the past 30 years, America’s support to criminal terrorists, bringing tensions to the region absolute support to the Zionist criminals and continuous threat against Iran as permanent enmities of America towards IRI, the IR Leader said that the American officials have insulted the Iranian nation many times and even some of the seeks eradication of this great and honourable nation.

Ayatollah Khamenei noted that the American new government says that it has stretched its hands towards Iran and we say if cast-iron hands have been hidden under a velvety glove so this move would be in vain.

Pointing to the America’s message over the new Iranian year Ayatollah Khamenei said they even had accused Iran of supporting terror and seeking nuclear weapons. He asked if it is a congratulation or continuation of the same accusations.

“We don’t know who is the real decision maker in America. The President or the Congress but we underlined that the Iranian decide on the basis of definite calculations not on emotions,” the IR Leader said.

Ayatollah Khamenei touched on the issues of talk with America and the new slogan of change of the new American President urged them to show real changes in this regard.

“Has your enmity with the Iranian nation ended? Have you released the Iranian assets or cut the sanctions? Have you quit negative propaganda against Iran? Have you ended your absolute support to the Zionist regime?” Ayatollah Khamenei asked.

The IR Leader said that a real change should not be a mere playing with words and if you want to follow your previous goals and just change your tactics this would be a deception not change so you should change practically. However the American officials should be cautious that the Iranian nation can not be deceived or intimidated.

Ayatollah Khamenei said that the American officials have to change their attitudes adding,” If you do not change be sure that divine customs and nations will change you.”

The IR Leader advised the American officials to investigate the reason behind hatred of the world’s public opinion towards their country and said,” Take lessons from realities. Stop such policies and behaviours for your and your country’s sake and interest. In that case your image will gradually improve in the minds of public opinion. Ponder carefully on my words. Of course, do not give them to Zionists to be translated; rather, consult with the right people.”

“Our word is as long as the US is following its past 30 years hostile methods, policies and approaches, our nation will be the same as the past 30 years and will become stronger and more experienced than ever,” Ayatollah Khamenei said.

Ayatollah Khamenei expressed his deep sorrow over demise of the Wife of the Late Imam Khomeini, Mrs. Khadijeh Saghafi and said that this notable personality stood by the Late Imam Khomeini in different incidents. He prayed peace for her soul.

April 15, 2009

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei attended a joint commencement ceremony for the Army and Islamic Revolution Guards Corps cadets at Imam Husayn military Academy on Wednesday.

Addressing the ceremony, Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces said integration of science, faith and strong determination into human being can nurture great people who can bring about promising futures for the human society.

The IR Leader said science is a God given gift but has unfortunately been used by some for aggression, corruption and tyranny, something which has led to the division of the world into the oppressed and the oppressor.

Ayatollah Khamenei then underlined the victory of the Islamic Revolution was a massive uprising of the people against the tyranny, and said the Islamic Revolution of Iran was a public outcry for Islam, monotheism, human generosity and justice in a world fraught with cruelty.

Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces further said those who are recommending Iran to return to the world order were unpleasant about the victory of the Islamic Revolution.

Ayatollah Khamenei pointed out that since the victory of the Islamic Revolution, the Iranian nation has rejected the illogical calls to bow to the bullying powers and yield to the unfair system governing the world.

The Iranian nation has responded to such requests with a ‘No’ in the past 30 years.

Ayatollah Khamenei then touched upon all the pressures on the Iranian nation and the Islamic establishment in the past three decades to harm the status of the Islamic Revolution, saying of course they have not been successful so far and will never achieve their unholy objectives.

The IR Leader told the cadets that you are guards of the holy reality and lofty identity and should be honoured to be in this position.

Referring to formation of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) by faithful and honest youth with strong will, the Leader said the result of the youth’s jihad specially in the holy defence time, was developing victories of the Iranian nation.

Ayatollah Khamenei added if today’s youth of Iran are not ahead of the youth in the Revolution era, they are not also further back.

The IR Leader called on the Iranian youth to strengthen their scientific capabilities as well as their spiritual and psychological well being, underlining hegemonic powers usually try to impose themselves on the nations but impressiveness of the intellectual, educated and pious youth would certainly be higher than their material impressiveness.

Ayatollah Khamenei reiterated today the enemy knows well that Iran, having the valuable asset of pious and knowledgeable youth along with determined and hard working officials, is not scared of anybody.

Later on, the Leader inspected an ultrasonic pneumatic tunnel designed and manufactured by the IRGC engineers.

The high-precision instrument which is important in designing aircraft and missiles.

After testing the ultrasonic pneumatic tunnel in the presence of Ayatollah Khamenei, the Leader appreciated the IRGC researchers and experts for designing and manufacturing one of the most complicated equipments.

Ayatollah Khamenei advised them for compensation of scientific backwardness, shortcut roads should be found.

The Leader further stated that the Iranian faithful and revolutionary youth have capability of doing everything, and added developments and achievements of the Islamic Iran at present are not comparable with those in the past.

The Islamic Revolutionary Leader stated that speed of the scientific progress in the country is very fast.

The Leader reiterated that despite the high speed of scientific progress in the country, there is still a long way to reach a proper point for compensation of the scientific backwardness which surely could be achieved by the young scientists of the country.

US forces, prime suspect in Iraqi bombings

April 25, 2009

“The prime suspect in this crime and other similar crimes is the American security and military forces who under the pretext of combat against terrorism have tyrannically occupied an Islamic country, murdered tens of thousands of humans and increasingly incited insecurity in the country.”

Islamic Revolution Leader Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei issued a statement Thursday in condemnation of Thursday terrorist attacks in Iraq in which dozens of pilgrims of Karbala were martyred. The text of the message is as follow.

In the Name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful

The disastrous terrorist attack in Iraq which led to martyrdom of innocent pilgrims grieved the hearts of lovers of the household of the Messenger and those who seek salvation in following their model.

The disgraced people whose hands are soaked with blood of those innocent people must know they have preferred human evils over God and thrown themselves in the God’s fire of anger. “And surely the Hell encompasses the unbelievers.”

The wicked hands and minds which have sowed this blind and unbridled terrorism in Iraq must know this fire will burn them and like in the case of other Islamic countries, their wicked intention will more press their own throats than others.

The prime suspect in this crime and other similar crimes is the American security and military forces who under the pretext of combat against terrorism have tyrannically occupied an Islamic country, murdered tens of thousands of humans and increasingly incited insecurity in the country. The growth of terrorism weeds and venomous plants in Iraq will indeed be recorded in the log of American crimes. The American and Israeli intelligence bodies are the prime suspects.

We expect the Iraqi government to seriously counter these crimes and wholly safeguard the security of the pilgrims of holy shrines.

Though the slain are martyrs and God will award them but the hearts of their relatives and friends are full of grief. I condole with all the grieved especially the families of the slain and ask God for recovery of the wounded.

Sayyed Ali Khamenei

The Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces then inspected an honor guard from the exemplary units in the field.

Ayatollah Khamenei in the ceremony called Kordestan as the land of sacrifice and martyrdom, adding that the Islamic System by relying on the faith and dignity of the province's people shined in the first years of the revolution in countering the enemy which was systematically trying to create insecurity and fratricide in the region.

University students of Kordestan

May 18, 2009

Addressing an enthusiastic gathering of the aware and wise university students of the Kordestan province, the Islamic Revolution Leader Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei elaborated on the true pattern of development and called on thinkers, elites and university students to study, search and draw a national and native pattern for development of the country.

Ayatollah Khamenei underlined that in the fourth decade of the Revolution, development and justice should be turned into a national discourse upon which a national pattern would be implemented. So we could take big steps at the end of this decade.

The IR Leader noted that the true meaning of development is different from what is called progress in the west and said that they may have some common points which should be considered.

Ayatollah Khamenei said that dividing the countries into advanced, progressive and non-developed ones is a western trick adding that in this pattern the real meaning of development has accompanied with the western values. In this pattern an advanced country is merely a western country but we completely reject this conception.

The IR Leader said that historical, political, human, cultural and geographical conditions determine the development pattern of every country adding that regarding many differences in the conditions of the countries, it is impossible to offer a single pattern for all countries.

Ayatollah Khamenei noted that regarding our special culture and history, we can not follow the patterns of America, Western Europe or northern America but it is necessary to draw a native pattern. The main duty in this regard is upon thinkers and university students.

Pointing to some advantages of the western development pattern, the IR Leader underlined that we follow our native pattern but we should not ignore some advantages of the western pattern including innovation, risk taking, discipline and braveness for action.

Touching on link between development and justice, Ayatollah Khamenei said that in western patterns, growth of gross national income (GNI) is among important criteria but if it increases in a country under injustice, the real development has not created.

The IR Leader noted that according to the Islamic view, human has two material and spiritual dimensions. The two dimensions are needed for offering the true development pattern, so the pattern which is based on the material view is completely different form the true development pattern.

Ayatollah Khamenei urged the students to avoid dependence on the political powers as the first condition for development and preserving the true development pattern.

The IR Leader rejected the way of some countries which have made some progress but follow approach of big power and said that following America and others is not sign of development and has no value because over the issue of national development, the independence of the country is the main priority.

Ayatollah Khamenei rejected the meaning of globalization as turning into some tolls in hand of western capitalism and added that the countries should keep their independence in this regard.

The IR Leader termed producing science as another prerequisite for the true development pattern and said that we should make balance between scientific exports and imports like economic issues.

Ayatollah Khamenei lauded the scientific achievements within three past decades and expressed his pleasure over the issue of producing science at universities.

The IR Leader urged for speeding up the scientific movement in all fields as well as theorization in different fields including in the human sciences so that we could add to the human knowledge.

Ayatollah Khamenei advised the university students to make efforts to confront with colonial power centers as another prerequisite for development and said that without touching on new scientific fields, no progress would be achieved.

The IR Leader also slammed silence of the global arrogance and international organizations such as the United Nations on the crimes and atrocities of the Zionist regime during the 22-day war in Gaza, IRI’s legitimate rights to make use of nuclear technology for peaceful purposes and mass killing of innocent civilians by the American troops in some neighboring states.

“World nations should learn lessons from the Iranian nation which strongly condemned the crimes and atrocities of the American and Zionists in international for a but unfortunately some people in the country feel shame over the nation’s stances like some people who felt shame for saying prayers in public during the Pahlavi era,” Ayatollah Khamenei added.

“IRI’s explicit stand on global developments is a source of pride for this generation,” the IR Leader said.

Ayatollah Khamenei also advised the university students to do their utmost to bring more scientific success and development for the country.

The IR Leader reiterated that firm and clear stances of the Iranian nation over the global developments should be put forward with proud to make the world people become more aware of the glory of the nation and the Islamic system.

Ayatollah Khamenei said that the university students of the Kordestan province like other regions of the country endeavour for progress of the country.

“I am sure that the university students of the region would bring a bright and more progressive future to the country,”

the IR Leader said.

Ayatollah Khamenei also ordered the Health and Science Ministers to pursue the suggestions of the Kordestan province’s professors and the university students.

The IR Leader urged for more connection and meeting between officials and the university students to find more ways for development of the country through such meetings.

Ayatollah Khamenei said that the enemy did his utmost efforts to make the Kurds separate from other races but the enthusiastic gathering of Kord people in Sanandaj and Marivan proved that all races of the country are united and follow the Islamic and national causes of the country.

Ayatollah Khamenei termed variety of races as an opportunity for the country and said the Iranian races including Fars, Turk, Lor, Balouch, Arab and Turkmen can play their role for development of the country and become source of blesses for the country.

The IR Leader said that it was a sign of greatness of Imam Khomeini's personality that despite the passage of many years from his demise, new dimensions of his personality are being understood now.

"The great architect of the Islamic Revolution was so competent that God manifested His blessing and will through him and Imam became the most important means to materialize the great miracle of God which was the Islamic Revolution," the IR Leader said.

Ayatollah Khamenei said Imam was the bright center of unity of nation so that even his opponents respected him in mind and appreciated his greatness.

The IR Leader said the deep and heartfelt affection of the Iranian nation to Imam has helped his thoughts to dominate other thoughts in society, adding that it was a notable reality that all political inclinations even those which do not believe in some of Imam's thoughts introduce themselves as supporters of Imam because they know that for the Iranian people on whose votes the Islamic system is based, it is a value to support Imam.

Iran leader issues veiled criticism of moderates

By Zahra Hosseinian

June 5, 2009

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran’s Supreme leader said on Thursday the Islamic Republic’s “honour” in the world should not be questioned, in an apparent criticism of reformers challenging President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in this month’s election.

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei spoke a day after a leading moderate rival accused the conservative president of humiliating the nation by adopting “extremist” foreign policies.

Former Prime Minister Mirhossein Mousavi made the allegation in a heated televised debate which underlined clear policy and personality differences between the two candidates widely viewed as front-runners in the June 12 presidential election.

The 90-minute debate, broadcast live on state television, captivated the nation as the candidates traded blows on issues ranging from the economy and relations with the United States to the Holocaust, which Ahmadinejad has repeatedly questioned.

Ahmadinejad’s critics, including some conservatives, say his fiery anti-Western speeches have isolated Iran, which is at odds with the West over its disputed nuclear work.

Khamenei has in the past praised Ahmadinejad’s handling of the nuclear issue and last month called on Iranians to back an anti-Western candidate, without mentioning any names.

“The honor of our nation today is reflected in the world,” Khamenei said in a televised speech to mark the 20th anniversary of the death of his predecessor Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.

“I do not accept the sayings of those who imagine that our nation has become belittled in the world because of its commitment to its principles ... this path will continue until final victory,” he said.

Iran says its nuclear program is only for electricity generation. The West suspects it is to build nuclear weapons.

Mousavi has said he would continue nuclear talks with major powers if he is elected president, in contrast to Ahmadinejad, who has ruled out any such negotiations with the United States, Russia, China, France, Germany and Britain.

Mousavi said in Wednesday’s debate that Iranians’ dignity had been damaged since Ahmadinejad was elected in 2005.

The president hit back, accusing Mousavi and his backers, including reformist former President Mohammad Khatami, of trying to weaken Iran by wanting a policy of “detente” with the West.

The streets of the capital Tehran were largely deserted as millions of Iranians watched the debate. Rival supporters poured into the streets after it was over, holding photographs of their candidates, shouting and honking car horns.

It is the first time since Iran’s 1979 Islamic revolution that such debates have been aired in a presidential election.

Khamenei, whose words can sway millions of loyalists to the Islamic Republic’s ideals, urged calm in the election campaign in order to avoid “enmity” and “chaos.”

“I do not have any problems with debates and criticism but try to do it in the right framework of sharia and religion,” he said, referring to Islamic law.

Ya Allah

Imam Khamenei (HA) spoke today:

The text of the message is as follows.

In the Name of God

Dear Iranian nation,

Aware, brave and timely men and women,

God's blessing to you for you proved your qualifications for receiving the blessings of God. Your epic Friday was a marvelous and exceptional event which beautifully and magnificently displayed to the world the political growth and determined revolutionary face and civil capacity of the Iranian nation.

The dignity and sovereignty which you showed by your calm and perfection in the country's history and the stout-heartedness you showed in the fateful ground amid the frenzy of enemy psychological war is so important that it could not be stated by regular remarks. One can only say that the Iranian nation has maintained its capacity for God's blessing and keep the support of God in the country's progress.

Khordad 22nd elections set a new record in the long history of Iranian elections. Participation of more than eighty percent in the elections and the 24 million vote to the president-elect is a real festival which by the favor of God could guarantee the progress, security and enduring enthusiasm in the country. Yesterday you proved that Iran thank to the Islamic, revolutionary slogans and values even thirty years after the inception of religious democracy in the country, is more alive and enthusiastic than ever and ensures friends and enemies that it would continue its bright way.

Modest towards the will and faith of you dear people, I congratulated the great accomplishment6 to Hazrat Valiollah Azam, to soul of Imam Khomeini and to every one of the people. I urge all people to cherish the favor of God and offer gratitude to the all-wise, all-knowing God.

Enemies would apparently seek to ruin the sweetness of the event through some provocations. I advise all people, especially the dear youths who were the liveliest players in the enthusiastic event, to keep vigilance. Saturdays after elections must always be day of affection and patience. Either supporters of the elected candidate or supporters of other respected candidates must avoid any provocative and ill wishing moves. The president-elect is the president of all Iranian people; every one including the rivals of yesterday must unanimously support and help him. No doubt, this is another Divine test which could attract God's blessing if passed successful.

I feel obliged to offer my sincere thanks to al those who played a role in creating the great event: the respected candidates who drew people of different social and political tastes to the scene through expression of their political and economic viewpoints; elites who invited their audience to the great test; grand Marjas and alims; university scholars; cultural and political personalities; the national media (IRIB), its managers, designers, anchor persons and artists whose admirable innovations played a fateful role in the unforgettable event; the Ministry of the Interior and the respected Guardian Council which met their obligations sincerely and honestly; the police and other security keeping bodies which secured a healthy, tranquil and open space for people and finally and more than others, every one of the voters who earned dignity and security for themselves and their country.

I again heartedly thank the dear and all-mighty God and ask his to bestow His guidance on this nation and this poor servant. I offer greetings to Valiollah Azam and pin hope in the prayers and support of the true owner of this country. I also offer greetings to the soul of the departed Imam and the pure souls of the dear martyrs.

Wassalam-u Alaikom wa Rahmatollah

40 million votes cast for Islamic System

June 16, 2009

Representatives of the four Iranian presidential candidates in an amicable meeting with Islamic Revolution Leader Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei expressed their views in clear terms regarding the 10th presidential elections.

In the meeting also attended by delegates of bodies in charge of elections, including the constitutional Guardian Council, Ministry of the Interior, National Audit Body and Elections Propaganda Commission, the relevant authorities provided the four candidates' representatives with some explanations about the elections.

Ayatollah Khamenei then in some remarks said elections have always been a symbol of unity and national dignity in Iran.

The IR Leader said the participation of almost 40 million people in the elections, is an honor for the Islamic system and all the voters with different attitudes share this great event and all are duty bound to protect this national unity.

“Voters have different political attitudes but they are all the same in their belief in the Islamic Republic and their support for the Islamic System,” Ayatollah Khamenei said.

“The friendly atmosphere that existed prior to the elections should not turn into an atmosphere of confrontation and enmity after the elections, since both groups of the voters believe in the Islamic system,” the IR Leader said.

“It is an accepted norm in democracy that the majority should rule, but this does not mean creating enmity and all are obliged to avoid making an atmosphere of confrontation,” he urged.

Ayatollah Khamenei underlined that all objections to the elections should be made through legal channels, adding, “I urge the Guardian Council and the Interior Ministry to closely investigate all the objections so that no doubtful point is left.”

“If needed, votes in some ballot boxes should be counted in the presence of representatives of the presidential candidates,” Ayatollah Khamenei said.

The IR Leader advised both the winners and losers in the elections to have patience and be careful about their conduct.

Referring to the agitators in the streets, Ayatollah Khamenei said those people are not supporters of any candidate “rather they are against the Islamic system and only support tension in the society.”

Supreme Leader Meets with Representatives of Presidential Candidates

June 16, 2009

Following the post-election protests in Iran, representatives of the campaign offices of the presidential candidates held a friendly meeting with Ayatollah Khamenei on Thursday. The representatives explicitly expressed their views of the presidential election and the resultant issues, prompting explanations from the officials in charge of the election.

Speaking at the meeting, which was also attended by representatives of the Guardian Council, Ayatollah Khamenei stressed that Iran’s elections have always been the manifestation of national unity and grandeur. He further added: “The presence of almost 40 million people at the polling stations is an honour for the Islamic Republic. All the voters, regardless of their tendencies, played a role in this regard. It is everybody’s duty to safeguard national unity.”

The Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution said that the people voted for the Islamic Republic by their presence in the election. “In all the elections, the main focus has always been on high voter turnout. That is because the presence of the people in the elections is a manifestation of national unity and grandeur, and indicative of their awareness and their vote for the Islamic Republic.”

His Eminence stressed that elections must not turn into a means of fomenting discord among the people, further reiterating: “It is a big mistake to imagine that 24 million people have been pitched against 14 million people in this election because those who voted for the president-elect and other candidates are all equally committed to the Islamic Republic.”

He added: “Voters tend to have various tendencies in our elections, but they all share the same view when it comes to supporting the Islamic Republic.”

Ayatollah Khamenei said national unity was the most important issue in the presidential election and was manifested through the presence of almost 40 million people at the polling stations. “During the electoral campaigns, people were present in the streets in an enthusiastic atmosphere, supporting their candidates without involving in any kind of confrontation. This is indicative of the existence of genuine democracy in the Islamic Republic,” he stated.

The Supreme Leader reiterated: “This friendly atmosphere must not turn into an atmosphere in which confrontation and hostility are prevalent because all voters are members of the Iranian nation, and they all believe in the Islamic Republic.”

Ayatollah Khamenei added: “Of course according to the principles of democracy, the majority are preferred to the minority, but this does not mean enmity and confrontation. It is everybody’s duty to prevent the formation of an atmosphere in which conflict and division are prevalent.”

His Eminence stressed that the complaints have to be pursued through legal channels and reiterated: “These complaints have to be investigated. I hereby ask the Guardian Council and the Interior Ministry to meticulously investigate the complaints and clear the ambiguities.”

He added: “If investigation of the complaints requires recounting certain ballot boxes, this has to be done in the presence of the representatives of the candidates’ campaign offices so that everybody is assured of the accuracy.”

The Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution said that he has always trusted the officials in charge of holding the elections, and added: “I have always trusted the officials in charge of elections although they have been from different political groups. But this should not prevent the officials from conducting an investigation in order to remove the doubts about the elections.”

Ayatollah Khamenei said that the presence of around 40 million people in the election was unprecedented during the past thirty years and added that it is a great honor which has to be appreciated.

He said that all the parties involved in the elections should take certain considerations into account and advised the followers of both the winning and the defeated parties to exercise patience and act considerately.

Ayatollah Khamenei said that having the capacity to deal with success or failure is a human virtue and a cultural norm which has to be promoted among the people and elites.

Ayatollah Khamenei said that there are some people who are opposed to the unity of the people and power of the Islamic Republic. “These people are the ones who spread rumours and even engage in vandalism.”

The Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution said that those who commit these crimes and involve in acts of vandalism are saboteurs and not supporters of the candidates, and stated that everyone should stand against these people.

Ayatollah Khamenei said that no one should think that these people are the supporters of a particular candidate and added: “Those who engage in these acts are opposed to the Islamic Republic and security of the country.”

He further added: “Those who do these things are after causing chaos. And even if the result of the election had been different, they would definitely have done these things nonetheless.”

Ayatollah Khamenei said that there are some people who have targeted the security of the country. He reiterated that everyone should explicitly state that they are opposed to turbulence and tension.

The Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution said it is everyone’s duty to defend the collective identity of the nation and the Islamic Republic and prevent the people form confronting one another.
