Asalaamu Alaikum...

I'm a sophomore in college studying Accounting and Arabic :)

Originally, I was majoring in Business Management... I just recently changed it to Accounting (which is incredibly BORING... no offense to any accountants!! lol..)...

My career won't really serve religion... But that's not important, as long as we ourselves serve our religion in one way or another.

Insh'Allah I want to build an Imambargah one day... :) It's been a dream...

Or... maybe I can be an accountant for some Ayatollah or something!! lol... Of course I wouldn't charge him :)

So really, I don't think the career directly has to relate to Islam, as long as your career doesn't make you do anything unIslamic... and you can serve your religion outside of your career... :)

Sorry for babbling...

Take care, ma'Salaama!!!

Salam All..

I'm currently in first year studying MIS at Carleton University..

MIS = Management Information Systems.  That's a combination of Computer science and Business.

How would it serve my religion?

Well, it will allow me to save up some money, get married, raise some children in the right path and hopefully thats what Allah requires from us :)

History major, senior!  Planning to graduate in June!  Then, law school, it never seems to end...To answer the 2nd part, I hope to use my skills to bring criminals to justice, or maybe become a politician of some sort (God help us all if that happens.)  Perhaps, change the world for the better.

God bless,

RJM

I'm glad I'm done with school. BS (class of '98) & MS (class of '00) in Electrical Engineering. But if I can, I would like to do another BS in Computer Engineering.

Graduated last year with a B.S. in International Economics. I am on the way to becoming a grade school teacher as of right now. Have a Job now as a Internal Center Teacher for kids with behavior problems in class. Maybe next year go on to teach Social Studies in sh'a Allah.

Plan to go to grad school once I can get the school board to pay for it hehe.

How does it apply to deen? Errr really doesn't I guess, but I try to give the kids some good guidance and teach them morals because I am under the impression that here in america most people who are from western culture do not teach there kids how to behave like civlized human beings, . The kids behave like cave man if you ask me. :(

Assalamu Alaykum All,

Let's see, well right now I am in my second year at the university, and Inshallah I hope to go into the nursing profession.  I don't know if this has any direct way in serving Islam, I mean, I want to help people in anyway.  I like the aspects of medicine.  I'd love to attend the hawza in the future, Inshallah after acheiving my major, I really want to have a higher level of education in Islam.

Inshallah you guys and gals all succeed in whatever you may choose to become.

                                              Wa alaikum as salaam

Philosophy major.  Inshallah I hope to go to Iran and study Islamic philosophy there for some of my postgraduate work.  I realize this won't be of great *material* benefit to the Ummah (unless I end up also studying fiqh and inshallah joining the ulema), but the theoretical persuit of the more "esoteric" of the Islamic sciences nonetheless has tremendous *spiritual* and *intellectual* value not only for the individual student but for the entire Ummah.

Sr. Ghareebat, how do you like your field of study so far? :) I'm thinking about sociology and religious studies myself, but people are always telling me that jobs related to those are hard to find. Inshallah you'll get the best out of it...let me know pls!

p.s- anyone in medicine? if so, how do you like it? :-)

thankyou

ma'salama :)

Salam,

I'm studying Computer Science and Engineering. I guess you call that in the anglosaxian countries as well? It's basically study of numerical analysis, logic and (the best part) the science of computers.

2nd year Business Management.....it seems i'm the only one in this field here since someone moved to accounting ( why did u do that?? LOL ;) )

umm.....i will run a business and do wat Ali will do  :D

as well look how much the profit stressed on trade ( tejara) and i used to be an IT(information technology) major but after taking macroeconomics and analyzing the situation and courses and all i found out i hate programming and rather stick to managing those IT people and use the programs they make for me :)

Asalaamu Alaikum :)

Awww ... I'm a second year student also...!!

Well, I changed because in my accounting class (which all Business Management students have to take also)... My professor always talks about how Accounting is so good because no matter if the economy is good or bad, accountants are always needed...

And the Big 5 (accounting firms) in NYC usually recruit graduates from my college... so I figured it'll give me a better chance of getting a good job after college...

He was telling us a story about this one kid who was a TOP NOTCH student with a 4.0 GPA who did Business Management (finance) and he was also well-rounded, blah blah, and he couldn't find a job!!

So the professor basically scared me into switching my major lol...  :) Pathetic, eh?

Oh well!! As long as I have a good job, it's all good!! Insh'Allah!!

And after taking my CPA, hopefully I'll be making good money :) especially if I start my own small accounting firm lol.. I doubt that'll ever happen, but I'm a dreamer...

You're lucky you're still doing BM though, cause Accounting is soooooooooooooooooo  BORING!!!!!!!!

Ok... I'm done babbling (again).. :)

Take care, ma'Salaamaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!

Hello,

Well my major is Biological Anthropology and my minors are Physiology and Zoology.  I'm headed towards something in medicine, (I just have to decide what), but I guess a job in that field would allow me to help people of all backgrounds, and not just Muslims.

Salam Alaykum,

I'm a senior in MIS.

I was told to the interpretation that Islam encourages education, that it is not only narrowed down to Islamic studies, rather to *any* education that you can use it to serve your religion... Any education that serves religion is the knowledge Islam is encouraging us to get.

Wsallam..

(salam)

Insha'Allah everyone is in the best of health and Iman.

so far i think im the only psych major here.........where are all the otherz????

:o I'm here!... I'm a psyc major... for now nah nah baba I think I am going to stick to this one... I really love psychology... and I'm 2nd so far... mark my words by the end I will be first... this is war! :)  hehe Insha'Allah.  What field of psychology are you planning on going into.. or do you not know yet?

I'm also planning on majoring in education or computeer engineering. hmm nono I want to do both.. mm I guess I will choose to major in one of those and minor in the other  oo I also want to minor in nursing.. but mmm donno about that one! maybe if I go to Iran I will go for it   So lemme see double major and double minor.  Am I setting myself up for to much?   yea n I wanna do all that just to have an occupation of.. *drum roll please* housewife and mother :D  see see being a mother has prerequisites!

ooo I forgot to mention I want to go to Qum as well, Insha'Allah.  Anything is possible eh?

oo one more thing I wanted to comment on the whole working and serving Islam bit.  I agree with Br Karbala.  There are a lot of different ways we can serve our Ummah..our religion.. and just because we don't go to hawza and become shaikhs doesn't mean that we are incapable of serving Islam.

There are different ways to serve Islam.  Some of us will get rich and give their money for Islam.  Some of us will train as soldiers and fight for our Islam.  Some of us will go to Hawza....  Some of us will devot our lives to our children, our families.. which, in effect, will be a service to Islam.. as long as we are practicing our religion and raising up future generations of technicians, docs, teachers, alims, soldiers etc.  All of us can do bits and pieces.. we do NOT have to be JUST an alim, or JUST  a soldier, or JUST that or JUST this.  Actually most of us will have some lil aspect of each in our lives, whether we realize it or not.  Each of us have our own purpose in life and we do make a difference, be it large or small.

All of these "professions" are valuable and neccessary and not to be undermined.  We (Muslims) shouldn't stick/limit ourselves to one field.  I mean we shouldn't all be Alims (but yes we should arm ourselves with knowledge of Islam), or all be doctors.. etc.  There has to be a healthy variety.... but in all fields it should be our intention to be serving Islam in one way or another.  As long as we have that intention (and we aren't doing something flat out haram.  Like I see some brothers opening gas stations and selling alchohol :nono: ) then we can be anything!

okok Im sorry mm Sr Zuljenah.. wanna have a babbling contest? :)  aa I'm just sorta having a lack of people to talk to right now lol...

take care everone! wassalam Alaikum
