Sins are divided into two categories: One has an ugly outward form like cutting someone with a knife, committing forbidden sexual acts, taking money from the one who rightly owns it, and other sins whose effects can be seen in a direct way. The second category is the sins which have no clear outward form. The sinner underestimates them because he doesn't see their effects. These kinds of sins are truly destructive faults before Almighty God. The evidence of this includes: insulting the honor of a Believer, even if he hasn't reached the highest levels of belief. The sinner sees nothing but the movement of the tongue, while in fact the Holy Qur'an describes it to be like eating the most repulsive thing on earth, the dead flesh of your own brother!

Social dignity is like the air that living things breathe. When one loses esteem in the eyes of others, it is like he is being strangled, like the air he breathes is being taken away from him. It shouldn't be surprising then that we find so many hadiths which consider the sin of attacking someone's social honor to be worse than fornication. That's because fornication is done in private, and it is relatively easy for the individual to come back to the straight path with sincere regret and repentance. Reflect on the prophetic statement that God will forgive the one who commits fornication, but He will not forgive the one who backbites until he is forgiven by the one he slandered!

Many people live in a condition of naive and simple thoughts. They will believe just about anything! broadcast in the media these days. The fact is most of the people in the media work on a purely commercial basis. They don't mind fabricating history if it earns them a few dirhams. The Holy Qur'an wants to warn us about these corrupt people these days when it says: {O you who believe! If a corrupt person comes to you with any news, verify it, lest you should harm people in ignorance and afterwards you become regretful for what you have done}. The believer should be wise, aware of the times he is living in, and not easily duped!

In many cases Islamic law urges us to think positive things about others, especially when they do something wrong to us. We should actually try and come up with excuses for them as long as we are not sure about their bad intentions. Outward actions do not always reveal inner intentions. In our own lives, don't we do things that cause others to think badly of us, even those closest to us, without us intending anything like that? We should make our motto, "Treat people as you would like them to treat you."

Amongst the Believers these days we see an increase in criticizing and analyzing others. We see individual speaking badly of others without conclusive evidence other than idle gossip. In fact he doesn't say anything but there is an observer watching him. God is quick in defending His worthy servant, as He considers him one of His most! important affairs. The Believer's honor is considered higher than the honor of the Holy Kaaba! This doesn't necessarily mean that we ignore faults and mistakes, but we can work to evaluate the deed and not the one who does it. Evaluating an action in an objective way doesn't require us to attack the one who does it. So we have to double our caution when talking about a Believer. If you break someone, as the hadith says, you have to repair him! But is repair always possible?

Talking about a Believer requires precision in choosing our words to prevent from making a slip that will make us fall in the eyes of God. We have to be extra cautious when we are talking about our scholars, the very symbols of the religion, when we know nothing but good about them. Defaming these people without good reason degrades the religion in the eyes of the people, the ones who only know the religion through its scholars. If anyone's talk degrades the religion, it encourages people to perform more sins, and he will share with these corrupt people in their ! sins. This will become clear to him in the Hereafter, where all of one's secrets will be exposed! Let us reflect on what Imam Sadiq (A) said, "Whoever mentions something about a Believer just to bring him down in the eyes of others and destroy his dignity, God expels him from His protection and sends him into the protection of the devil, but even the devil would not accept him".

One of the causes of antagonism and exaggeration in criticizing others is a prior psychological attitude. The nature of anyone who bears hatred towards his fellow Believer would cause him to speak badly of him. He follows his whims which sometimes drag him to desires, and other times drag him to anger. The problem reaches its peak when the individual tries to cover his talk with religious justification. But he knows deep within himself that this is a false justification. One of the keys to fixing this problem is seeking through the hidden depths of the soul to find if there is any corner occupied by the devil as a hideout from which to spread his poison. Thus the purified heart has been the ultimate goal of the wise throughout all of history .

The comprehensive solution to get rid of sins of both kinds, the obvious and the hidden, is the belief that the human being stands before his Lord no matter where he may be. He should recall this! sort of camera above his head which doesn't miss any action great or small. This is one of the true meanings of the verse: {On the day when God will resurrect them altogether and inform them of what they did. God has kept account of it, while they have forgotten it, and God is witness over all things}. And one of the examples of divine admonition in the verse: {Doesn't he understand that God sees}. It is not strange that one the foremost qualities of the pious that the Holy Qur'an mentions is belief in the unseen. It then selects from the belief in the unseen the special quality of belief in the Hereafter. In the end, let us reflect on the content of what Imam Jawad (A) said, "You have to realize that you are never absent from the eye of God, so be mindful of how you are!" .
