  1. Assalamu Alaikum, I was once told or perhaps heard in a lecture, that Imam Reza as helps the believers cross the sirat in the next world, on the condition that we visit him (shrine). Please can anyone give me the reference/source to this, it would be most appreciated? I need this for a project. Thank you.
  2. Salam. I hope you're all doing well inshallah. To begin with, I was going to ask about magic and jinn. Whether magic is simply the act of deception, and whether jinn can actually communicate and cross to our reality. Personally, I do not believe in magic the way it is portrayed in movies and such, nor do I believe in the ability to communicate with jinn. Anyhow, as I started to read more, specifically regarding quran 2:102, I came across (forgive me) some ridiculous sounding tafseer. I can accept all regarding the story of Harut and Marut, but not when it tells that the woman they desired was turned to Venus. It refers to Venus as a star too. It feels as though it was taken from the Roman mythology, stories told long before islam. Venus, the goddess of sex, fertility, beauty, prosperity and desire. [http://www.al-islam.org/hayat-al-qulub-vol-1-allamah-muhammad-baqir-al-majlisi/account-harut-and-marut]. I did notice, after reading that the two were hung by their feet, that the writer of this article must have used sources outside of islam too (2 peter 2:4; Jude 1:6). Perhaps this is why he deduced the woman became venus? Some sunni sources (presumably using at-tabari as point of reference?) claim Harut and Marut to be humans with angelic attributes. Others have stories consistent with that in al-islam [http://www.aulia-e-hind.com/HarutMarut.htm]. Are there any better (reliable) sources that explain their story a little better? Thank you. Jazakum Allah kheiran.
  3. Salaam Alaikum dear brothers and sister: I am currently enrolled in a course in my university called: Pathways to Enlightenment. This is a required senior seminar course, but the specific topic/course focus was allowed to be selected by us. For this class I am to write a 20 page research paper on a topic of my choice. Here is a description of the topic: Research Paper: Students choose their own area of interest that emerges from (or merges with) the course theme of Enlightenment, and then write a series of four 5 page essays that will eventually form into a whole. Think of this as a book with a title that includes the word Enlightenment, and then chapters that indicate an engagement with the different disciplinary lenses we’ve been using. These papers require a use of common course readings AND original research materials. The “chapters” will need to be revised in order to create a fully coherent whole turned in during the final exam period colloquium. Conferences with me throughout the writing process are required. For my topic, I decided I will be focusing on the topic of Karbala and Muharram, and how this is a sort of "enlightenment" particularly for Shiite Muslims. Since I will need to look at the topic through a historical lens, I was wondering if anyone could provide me to some academic, well-researched articles pertaining to the topic of Karbala, and perhaps the history of Islam following the death of Muhammad pbuh. I know there are many, many resources out there; therefore, I was wondering if any brothers or sisters knew some great works on the topics of the history of Karbala, or a general history following Muhammad's death, a general timeline, etc. etc. All resources would be greatly appreciated. Salaam.
  4. Hello, I am conducting research on the differences between how Shia and Sunni Muslims conduct their prayers. I am curious as to WHY these differences arose, and if possible please link your source (as I need to cite them). Also, if anyone would be willing to partake in an interview through email, either Shia or Sunni, it would be greatly appreciated. Kind Regards
  5. http://www.islamquest.net/en/ It seems very interesting and great. You can send them ANY questions. They give sources and all. Very interesting, check it out, it comes in many languages too!
  6. Asalaamu alaikum. When one reads traditions of our Ahlul-Bayt (a.s.), the traditions come from sources that are considered to be "reliable" and "authentic". This leads me to ask, what makes a source reliable or not? For example, traditions from Al-Kafi are considered to be authentic to our Shia sect, and Bukhari and Muslim are not. Why is this, and what is the reasoning for it? Thank you.
  7. Salaam wa alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh Does anyone here perhaps know where www.al-islam.org quotes the home page hadiths from? I've made it a habit to refresh the page to find interesting thoughts and hadiths - but it's started to click with me that I should perhaps seek some citations from some original sources. Specifically one that a colleague has asked about: "Do not keep the company of an evil person, for surely your character will take on something of his character without your even realizing it." Thanks and Salams Ali
