  1. Interesting idea occurred to me yesterday. I'm someone who has always been of the point of view that the whole controversy over evolution is way overblown, and that evolution actually fits in very nicely with a Theistic creation point of view, as long as you look at it from the right philosophical perspective. (To simplify, God is the creator and agent of change, and evolution is the history, the details of that change.) One interesting field that comes out of evolution is evolutionary psychology. It looks at how certain psychological aspects of our behavior are linked to the history of the development of the human lifeform through evolution, particularly as adaptations to evolutionary challenges we faced over time. One of the powerful ideas is that certain psychological tendencies that are harmful today (like gluttony, the tendency to just overeat if we are provided with bounty, the tendency to distrust strangers or people outside our family or tribe, our tendency toward violence, our tendencies to be carried away by lust) are there within us because in earlier, more animalistic stages in the process leading to the modern human form, these traits helped our ancestors to survive. Those tendencies come from our lower brain areas. The more recent adaptation, the higher brain, the cerebral cortex, is sort of fighting a battle to control these lower brain elements. But there's always a struggle, because this rational brain that is needed for us to adapt to modern demands is always challenged by the animal brain pulling us towards animal urges. Meanwhile in Islam, there is the talk of different types of souls, and of the mysterious Shaytaan that serves as some voice pulling us toward an animalistic path. I wonder if what was called in the pre-science days 1400 years ago, the "Shaytaan" is actually this lower, older brain? If so, could this serve as a validation of evolutionary ideas within Islam? Discuss.
  2. "...and whoever takes the Satan for a guardian rather than Allah he indeed shall suffer a manifest loss.." (Surah Nisa: Verse 119 ) Interpretation(Tafsir): When one calls the Satan, that is, obeys his commands, Allah counts it as taking the Satan for a guardian, as He says: "And whoever takes the Satan for a guardian rather than Allah he indeed shall suffer a manifest loss." It should be noted that Allah has not said: Whosoever the Satan is his guardian; because the previous verses have clearly shown that the guardian is Allah alone and no one else has any guardianship on anything even if someone takes him as his guardian. (Al-Mizan) If we observe our society in this era of the ghaibah of our Imam(a.s) we can simply understand that majority of Muslims have accepted Satan as their guardian, and our hearts have turned black. It will be misleading to say that the our society is very good and only some men and women have been misled, the ground realities are totally different. When a person with strong belief goes out of his house, it becomes extremely difficult for him to save his eemaan from immodestly dressed women, along with ones wearing seductive hijaabs, luring music and many other fatal temptations. And this is the reason why the Masoom(as) said that a time will come when Saving Eemaan will be more difficult than holding fire in hand.
  3. (bismillah) (salam) As many of you may know I have had many many doubts mainly regarding Ghusl, Wudhu and Salah. The doubts I had made religion sooo hard for me to follow and I was making it difficult for myself because of my doubts, alhamdulillah I doubt less now and I would hate for others to doubt like how I did so I made this thread. I would like whoever has doubts to send me a PM about their doubt and insha'Allah I can help them solve it. The reason why I believe I will be able to help them is because I have gone through countless scenarios doubting about many different things. The reason why I am saying PM me is because if you write it here others may pick up the doubts, for example one of the doubts which I got was because my friend told me about his doubt and I ended up doubting about that same thing because he told me about it. I don't think I will pick up the doubt as I have probably had the doubt before myself. Edit: I must have used the word 'doubt' alot of times in there  (wasalam)
