What is the Islamic understanding of "The Messiah"? 1 or more than 1?
Guest posted a topic in General Islamic Discussion
I'm going through an interesting case where I'm unsure as to what is the Islamic definition of a Messiah. I'm beginning to understand the reasoning behind the support of Jesus (عليه السلام) being God, the Trinity, and Original Sin Doctrine the Christians espouse despite its irrationality in general. It all hinges on the Christian understanding of Messiah where Jesus (عليه السلام) fulfilled 3 offices of Messiahship: Prophet, Priest, and King. What Christians believe in is the theology of Mono-Messianism when it comes to Jesus (عليه السلام) as not just The Messiah, but The One and Only Messiah, The Seal of All Messiahs before him. Similar to how Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) is the Seal of All Prophets before him. Historically, under Judaism the idea of The Messiah holding all 3 offices has never been a general consensus where there were many Messiahs before Jesus and they never hold all 3 offices at unison. And for the interest of Christians when reading the Tanakh of the Jews and how many Messiahs came before Jesus where none of them hold all 3 offices at the same time, it would stand to reason that the office of both King and Priest are polar opposite offices. One can be a Messianic Prophet and a Priest? Sure look at Prophet Isaiah (عليه السلام). One can be a Messianic Prophet and a King? Sure look at Prophet David (عليه السلام) and Prophet Solomon (عليه السلام). How can there be such a thing as a Messianic Prophet that is both a Priest and a King? Isn't this equivalent to Nimrod (Namrood) reasoning where he claims to Abraham, "I am justice where I give life and bring death. I am LifeGiver and DeathBringer given how I am Just." I think this is a question that some Christians think about and hence that's where they attempt to reconcile the issue by saying Jesus is God along with the Trinity and Original Sin Doctrine to maintain that Mono-Messianism theological position of Jesus fulfilling the 3 offices of Messiahship: Prophet, Priest, and King. But most importantly on the notion that Jesus is both a Messianic Priest and Messianic King at the same time. However, what about Poly-Messianism? Wasn't that a theological discourse within Judaism at some point when it came to the Jews understanding of The Messiah? So what I'm trying to understand is the Islamic definition (both Sunni and Shia) of Messiah. Jesus (عليه السلام) is The Messiah that is self-explanatory in The Quran and the Quran furthermore chastises the Christians and Jews to not commit excess in their religion where they are re-interpreting the theology when it comes to the definition of Messiah where you must be God in order to be The Messiah along with other definitions. However, is Jesus (عليه السلام) The One and Only Messiah that is the question? Or is there another entity alongside Jesus who is also The Messiah just as much as him? I've been reading a bit on Shia Hadith Literatures where The Mahdi (عليه السلام) will judge the people like Prophet David (عليه السلام) and Prophet Solomon (عليه السلام) have judged their people. There's also another Hadith narration where a congregation prayer commences (aka Friday Prayer). Jesus (عليه السلام) will pray behind The Mahdi (عليه السلام) during this congregation prayer. When The Mahdi (عليه السلام) asks Jesus (عليه السلام) to lead the congregation prayer since He's The Messiah, Jesus (عليه السلام) will decline the offer to The Mahdi (عليه السلام) where The Mahdi (عليه السلام) will lead the congregation prayer. What does this mean? Is The Mahdi (عليه السلام) also The Messiah just as much as Jesus (عليه السلام)? Does The Mahdi (عليه السلام) have Bani-Israeli ancestry similar to that of a Judean (Yahoodi)? -
Wa salam alaikum! (did I spell that right?) I have a question about which I would love to hear a Muslim perspective. It regards Jesus Christ, a favorite for all of us. In my conversations with Muslims, many say things like "Jesus never claimed to be God." So I would like to know what you (the Muslims on here) would say about this passage from John chapter 8: 54 Jesus answered, “If I want glory for myself, it doesn’t count. But it is my Father who will glorify me. You say, ‘He is our God,’ 55 but you don’t even know him. I know him. If I said otherwise, I would be as great a liar as you! But I do know him and obey him. 56 Your father Abraham rejoiced as he looked forward to my coming. He saw it and was glad.” 57 The people said, “You aren’t even fifty years old. How can you say you have seen Abraham?[j]” 58 Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, before Abraham was even born, I am![k]” 59 At that point they picked up stones to throw at him. But Jesus was hidden from them and left the Temple. [emphasis mine; for full context, check here] In this passage, we see Jesus expressing several important things. God is his father Jesus is older than Abraham Jesus uses the name of God {"I am"} as a description of himself. The Jewish authorities recognized this as a claim to divinity, as evidenced by their grabbing of stones to kill him. God vindicated this claim by hiding Jesus so he could leave the Temple safely. What are your thoughts about this passage?

Writing this topic thinking that it is not mentioned here. On February 2017, NASA has discovered a new solary system which they call Trappist 1,consisting of a dwarf red star surrounded by 7 planets. Recently the existence of water here is also spoken about by many claiming that conditions of life as in case of earth is shown also in some of these planets in this system. Jewish religious text named Zohar(supposed to be written 2000 years ago) mentions the arrival of a new star surrounded exactly by 7 'stars' as the concrete sign before the coming of Messiah King which also heralds the coming tribulation (natural cataclysms like earthquakes, wars). The star prophecy is an important affair sinc many Messiah claimants in the past had been rejected by Jewish people sinc their arrival wasn't heralded by any star. Numbers 24:16 "The saying of him who heareth the words of God, and knoweth the knowledge of the Most High, who seeth the vision of the Almighty, fallen down, yet with opened eyes: 17 I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not nigh; there shall step forth a star out of Jacob, and a scepter shall rise out of Israel, and shall smite through the corners of Moab, and break down all the sons of Seth." It is clear that Zohar and these prophecies all talk about this Trappist 1. The Star of Mashiach in the Zohar Shemos 7a A pillar of fire will be seen standing from above to below 40 days. All the nations will see it. At that time Melech Hamoshiach will awakedn and go out from Gan Eden, from the place called Kan Tzippor, and will be revealed in the Galil. On that day that Moshiach goes out from there, the entire world will shake and all world will hide themselves in caves and clefts in the rocks, and they won’t think to be saved. […] After 40 days that the pillar will stand from the earth to the heavens in the eys of all the world the Moshiach will be revealed. A star will arise from the East side, flaming with all colors, and 7 other stars will go around this star and make a war with it on all sides 3 times a day for 70 days, and all the people of the world will see. That same star will make war with them with blazes of fire and flaming and sparking on each side, and it will hit them until it swallows them each and every night, and then in the day it returns and expels them, and they make war in the eyes of the whole world. After 70 days, that star will be concealed and Moshiach will be concealed for 12 months and the pillar of fire will return to the way it was before and in it Moshiach will be concealed and that pillar will not be seen. And as for the Messiah King whom Jews expect is clearly the Mahdi and not Dajjal. As for the Nibiru conspiracy, its clearly this same Trappist 1 though many claim its something other. Jewish King is coming

Salam Aleikum. Since our ultimate goal in this life is to establish truth and eradicate injustice, we should all long for the reappearance of our Savior Imam Al-Mahdi ÚÌøá Çááøå ÝÑÌå ÇáÔÑíÝ. But the Imam does not appear unless his truthful 313 companions are ready... What are the significant attributes of these 313 and how could we be a part of them. Are these 313 chosen by Allah or does every one of us have the potential to be among them? If anyone could refer some narrations from the Ahlulbayt(as) concerning this i would be grateful. Jazakallah khair jaz'a.

Peace be with you This question has been on my mind for some time and to which I have found no compelling answer: What does it mean to be 'the Messiah', or rather what is the function of that office? The Quran awards the offices of prophet, messenger, and leader to multiple individuals. And each office has its own function. But with the office of messiah only a single individual is awarded, thus making it unique and its function being defined in and of itself. So what distinction does the Quran make which distinguishes this unique office from the others? What did the Messiah do in order to be regarded as such?
