(bismillah) A Jew Becomes MuslimDuring Imam `Ali’s caliphate, Shurayh was the judge. The Imam came to the court with a Jew so that Shurayh will judge between them. The Imam said, “The cuirass which is in your hand is mine, for I have neither sold it nor have I given it as a present.” The Jew said, “The cuirass is mine and now it is in my hands.” Shurayh asked the Imam to present a witness. Imam `Ali said, “Qanbar (his servant) and Husayn testify that the cuirass is mine.” Shurayh said, “sons’ testimonies for their fathers are not valid nor are these of servants, for they will witness in your favor.” Imam `Ali said, “Woe to you, Shurayh! You have certainly made several mistakes. Firstly, I am your leader and you obey Allah because you obey me and you know that what I say is not false. Secondly, you claimed that Qanbar and Husayn witnessed in my favor. The punishment for this is to judge among the Jew for three days.” The Imam sent the judge to a Jewish neighborhood to judge among them and then to come back to his place of work. When the Jew heard that although `Ali had two witnesses but did not misuse his authority and the judge too passed a judgment against him, said, “This is truly the Leader of the believers.” Hence he became Muslim; he confessed that the cuirass belonged to Imam `Ali, it had fallen off the Imam’s black and white camel during the Battle of Siffin and he had taken it for himself. Hilyat al-Awliya’: 139/4.

Plans And Policies Of Imam Ali (A.s) For Justice
Muhammad Taha posted a topic in Shia/Sunni Dialogue
(bismillah) Plans and policies of Imam Ali (A.S) to reform the previously unjust distribution of resources. Imam Ali (A.S) said that he would return all usurped possessions to the public treasury and to their real owners: By Allah, even if I find that by such money women have been married or slave women have been purchased, I will reclaim it because there is a wide scope in the dispensation of justice, and he who finds it hard to act justly will find it harder to deal with injustice. (bismillah) Explaining why Imam Ali (A.S) accepted the Caliphate after the death of the third Caliph, Imam Ali (A.S) says: Behold, by Him who split the grain [to grow] and created living beings, if people had not come to me and supporters had not exhausted the argument, and if there had been no pledge of Allah with the learned to the effect that they should not acquiesce in the gluttony of the oppressor and the hunger of the oppressed, I would have cast the rope of Caliphate on its own shoulders, and would have given the last one the same treatment as the first. Then you would have seen that, in my view, this world of yours is no better than the sneezing of a goat. (Nahj al-Balaghah, Sermon 3)

(bismillah) Muslim narrates from Sa'd b. Abi Waqqaqs that he was asked by Mu'awiyah why he refused to abuse 'Ali verbally. Sa'd replied: 'I remember three saying of the Prophet about 'Ali, which caused me not to say anything bad about him. If I possessed even one of these qualities it would be better for me than red camels. The first was that, when the Prophet wanted to go to the war of Tabuk, he left 'Ali was very sad that he was not fortunate enough to join the army and fight for the sake of Allah. He went to the prophet, saying: "Do you leave me with the children and women?" The Prophet replied: "Are you not happy to be to me, as Aaron was to Moses, except that there will be no prophet after me?" Second is what I heard from the Prophet on the day of conquest of Khaybar: "Certainly I will give the flag [of Islam] to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger and is loved by Allah and His Messenger." We hoped to be given the flag, but the Prophet said: "Call 'Ali for me!" 'Ali came forward, although he was suffering from pain in his eyes. The prophet gave him the flag and at his hands Allah granted us victory. The third instance is that when the verse of Mubahalah was revealed the Prophet called 'Ali, Fatima, Hasan and Husayn and said: "My Lord! These are my household."' [sahih of Muslim, Vol. 4, p. 1871, no. 2408. (Kitab Fadail al-Sahabah, Sakhr serial no.4420)]
