  1. Salaam alaikum brothers and sisters Today United States President Trump signed an executive order rescinding all or almost all laws, guidelines, and regulations meant to curb or remedy "global warming", or as it is more correctly called, "climate change". But why should we care? Is climate change even really happening? And if it is, is it caused by human activities? And is it worth the loss of income to major energy producers and manufacturers to try to stop it even if it is? How will climate change affect the world and society? More extreme weather predicted It's documented. It's verified. But is it caused by human activity? I don't think it matters: everything we can do to reduce the effects of man-made climate change is good for the environment in other ways too. Further reading
  2. Salam I'm just beginning to learn, but find the concepts inspiring. I'm sure as a civil engineer, I can contribute. I'm just not yet sure how. http://www.asce.org/issues-and-advocacy/public-policy/policy-statement-418---the-role-of-the-civil-engineer-in-sustainable-development/ What do you know about sustainable development? The ideas have been around for a while but only recently are getting media attention. http://genun.unausa.org/10_things_you_can_do_right_now_to_help_accomplish_the_sdgs
  3. Salam All was debating whether to put this in the general discussion thread, but knowing SC, this thread will be forgotten about in a matter of days, since mutah and mahdi ism dominate discourse. What got me to writing this thread was, apart from my frustrations, the world people's conference on climate change and the rights of Mother Earth (Gaia), which was held on Bolivia. The countries attending drafted the Universal Declaration of the rights of Mother Earth. When I looked that up it led me to the Gaza foundation, and what caught my eye was, you guessed it, the clear absence of Islamic representation. So, the goal of this thread is to document the absenteeism of Islamic jurisprudence and the scholars researching fields of research working for the betterment of society and the world. Irrespective of the fiqh school you follow, I would like to expose the clear irresponsible behaviour of our religious establishment to contribute in fields we clearly could have influenced. I start with what this: there is a document produced by indegiounous people's around the world that lists the rights of Mother earth and our responsibility towards her. There are zero Muslims/Shia contribution to this document. We need to work towards a universally acceptable Islamic view on how to treat the environment as it is intended to be treated.
  4. (Salam) A brilliant paper by Sheikh Shomali: (Bismillah) "In the Name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful Prophet Muhammad: If Resurrection is starting and one of you has a sapling in his hand which he can plant before he stands up he must do so.[1] (d. 148/765) Imam Sadiq: There is no joy in life unless three things are available: clean fresh air, abundant pure water, and fertile land.[2] One of the most important problems in today’s world is the environmental crisis. It seems that this problem started when modern man stopped understanding himself as the vicegerent and trustee of the All-Merciful God who must channel divine mercy to everything at his disposal or within his reach, and stopped understanding nature as a sacred sign and valuable trust from God. For the same reason, it seems that the best way to protect the environment from destruction and, indeed, to improve its condition is to revive these forgotten understandings by referring back to the teachings and instructions of divine religions and reviewing and readjusting our policies regarding the application of modern technology and in using natural resources appropriately. In this paper, I will try to briefly present some aspects of the Islamic perspective on environmental ethics in the light of Qur’anic verses and Islamic narrations (hadiths). The paper consists of four parts: nature; governing rules in Islamic environmental ethics; virtues related to human treatment of the environment; and vices related to human treatment of the environment." A very important and insightful read, The rest of which can be found here: https://www.thinkingfaith.org/articles/20081111_1.htm Strongly recommend. We neglect our duties towards the environment all too often and a lot of the time engage in activities that are damaging to the environment which we don't tend to realise are ultimately haram.
  5. Asalaamu Alaikum When the Imam (ajt) reappears, will all of the environmental problems of the world be solved? Global warming, endangered animals, scarce resources, etc etc. I asked my mom, she seems to think ALL problems in the world will go away but I'm not so sure--is there any proof of this? Any other opinions?
