  1. Assalam-O-Alaikum Brothers and Sisters, I'm sure there are alot of us that are mashallah in a a habit of reciting various duas in the morning as a daily routine; such as Surah Yaseen, Duah Ahad, etc. I my self for example recite Surah Yaseen in the morning; however when reciting such duas in the most correct form, as far as how I've understood it from others, one should recite them with complete focus/attention, and actually should not just be reading the Arabic words but actually should understand it. So my first question is that if the person recites the duas mainly in arabic and not having much understanding of the dua and its translation; is the dua he/she has recited in arabic accepted? Secondly, often time when reciting such duas, because we are human and constantly fall prey to the whispers of shaytan, so while reading duas our attention, mind starts wandering away into other worldy affairs, such as what I did yesterday, or what I have to do today etc. etc. In that case is my Dua void? because when I recite duas, sometimes my mind unknowingly slips into other thoughts and when I realize I get back into it but its like a back and fourth cycle. So I often wonder if my dua even gets accepted. I would appreciate what others have to say about it. Thanks. Ali
  2. Similar to the thread previous to this, I will start by stating the pattern that I’m seeing emerging is Islamic arguments are primarily based on “arguments from ignorance” combined with something that we have some understanding of. Here I use the concept of supplications to explain my point. An easier way to explain what I’m saying is to take the idea of earthquakes. Before we understood why earthquakes occur, we would say it’s God’s punishment. Specially in the past if towns/cities were destroyed by earthquakes, the reason would be because God punished them for some wrong they were doing (and most people are doing something evil in every town, so it becomes even easier to blame them). If not punishment we assign the label of a “test”. Today we understand that earthquakes occur due to movement of plates, and occur regardless of people being good or bad. Similarly religion attempts to provide reasons and rationalizations for evil/suffering to help us feel better… normally ignoring the actual causes behind it. Here is another example. Imagine 2 people, an atheist and born muslim. Both go to the same school and become really good friends. Both of them like similar subjects, they excel in their studies and both apply to the same medical schools to become doctors. The Muslim supplicates and prays to get admitted. His parents tell him to read ziarat Ashura and salatul layl, they tell him he should say a nazr that he will go for ziarat if his wishes are accepted by God, and so on. He does some of this and eventually he does get admitted to medical school. He feels that God accepted his prayers, and thus he continues with these ziarats and prayers, hoping for material as well as rewards in the hereafter. The atheist friend also gets admitted into medical school. The reason why both get admitted to medical school is that they were both excellent students that worked hard and met the requirements of the school. There was no correlation to the ziarats and prayers… however since religion relies so heavily on arguments from ignorance, we start thinking our prayers have some type of powers. We ignore the actual causes and effects, and attribute them to supernatural causes because we “believe” and don’t actually “know”. In the above example a number of combinations could have been derived. Suppose the muslim didn’t get admitted because he didn’t meet the requirements, or there wasn’t enough space in the school, or the admission director is racist, etc, whatever the cause… if he were to ask why God didn’t accept his prayers, just to make him feel better, he would be given other justifications such as it wasn’t the best for you, God knows better, everything happens for the best… when in reality the causes and effects are not supernatural. Just like an earthquake. Let’s simplify it even further. Suppose I flip a coin and pray it lands on heads every time. Naturally roughly around 50% of time, my prayer will work and won’t work. With prayers we are normally already working towards the goal we are praying for, so chances increase that the goal may be achieved (and prayer is “answered”). However the atheist that never prays has the same chances to attain their goals, without the use of repetitive Arabic phrases, because the underlying cause and effect at work is not connected to the prayer. If it is connected, how would you prove it?

  12. I remember seeing some duas which a person can read to avoid a painful death. I was wondering if anyone here knows duas which people can read when they are alive. My FB feed is filled with videos of an Irani Muhsin who was beheaded by ISIS and it's very painful to watch. Few days ago, I read about an american soldier who committed suicide when he knew he was going to be captured by ISIS. I feel that in such situations, suicide should be allowed. But anyway, let's add all the duas we can find to this thread.
  13. Salam aleykum, There are some very short moments between you maghrib prayer and your breaking of the fast. I believe the duas you do straight after maghrib during this holy month are very very meaningful as they are done in a state where you really want to get up and go. Just like the salah that is done in public that would make you feel uncomfortable. Please remember to recite dua al Faraj in this state, in this month, ask for the return of our Imam ajf.
  14. It is a paper and you won't find it in English anywhere. Adab of Dua(Methods of Dua) or how you supplicate so that is accepted by God Almighty. Here is the list: 1)search for the right time, there are very important times for supplication(Dua), like the night of Thursday, Friday, Day of Arafah, Month of Ramadhan, in the morning(after morning prayer), Nights of Qadr, etc. 2)search for holy and pure sites and places, like holy mosques, Masjid al-Haram(the Holy Mosque), Holy Shrines of Imam Ma'someen, especially Haram/Shrine of the Holy Prophet(s) and the Shrine of Aba Abdillah al-Hussain; the acceptance of Dua in Holy Shrine of Imam Hussain is guaranteed in traditions, Haram of the sons and daughters of Imams, etc. 3)during Nuzul of Rahmah, while God's mercy is bestowed upon us, like during rain and snow and ... between Adhan and Iqama, after Wajib Salaat(five obligatory prayers) and ... are states in which responding(Istijabat) of Dua is very close 4)wearing pure clothes during supplication, tahir, good smell etc. 5)having Wudhu(ritual purity) 6)facing the Qibla is one of Adab(etiquette) of Dua 7)begging like beggars towards God, keeping up the hands to the sky, while supplicating 8)praying with humbleness and piety following part two, God willing...

  16. (salam) Du'a an-Nudba which means a Supplication of Lamentation is one of the most authentic and important du'as and it has been narrated from Imam Mahdi (atfs) himself. This dua' should be recited every Friday morning. The translation available on www.duas.org isn't complete and totally correct and so I decided that it would be a good idea to make a thread and post links connected to it. Allamah Muhammad Baqir Majlisi (r.a.) has quoted this Dua in 'Zaad-ul-Maad' from Imam Jafar-e-Sadiq (a.s.). It is for the Imam of the time. And Muhammad bin Ali bin Abi Khura has quoted this dua from the book of Muhammad bin Husain bin Sufyan Bazoofari, from Imam-e-Asr. Apart from this, great Shia scholar Sayed Raziuddin bin Tawoos has mentioned it in his book, "Iqbal" on page no.295 to 299. Muhammad bin Jafar Mashadi Haeri has recorded it in book Al-Mazaan (Dua no.107). Qutb Rawandi in Al-Mazaar also records it and so does Allamah Majlisi in 'Zaad-ul-Maad' and 'Beeharul Anwaar'. Shaykh Abbas Qummi too has narrated it in his book, 'Mafatihul Janan'. ...continued here The Du'a with English translation - PDF format. 19. Auzobillaahiminash Shaitaanir rajeem. Bismilaahir Rahmaanir Raheem. Assalaamu Alaikum. There are many people whose Duas are easily answered. Just wondering have anyone thought of making, say, Duas to save yourself from Hell and grant Jannatul Ferdaus (best Heaven)? or, making Dua for the benefit of ummah? This is because there is a story about a man Balaam ibn Baoora (also spelled Bu’laam bin Baa’ooraa’) , who used to live at the time of Prophet Musa (Alaihis Salam). He was not just any man, but a scholar. He was not any scholar, but one who knew the Ism e Azam , the greatest name of Allah, using which if a person makes Dua, the Dua is answered. Even after this Bulaam got deviated. I mean, if such a khowledgable man gets deviated, what will happen to common people? I was wondering why didn't he make Dua to get Heaven and protected from Hell, or ask for the well-fare of the Muslim nations, or ask for protection from Shaitan? The lesson is enlightening. Thought I should share. http://www.thelastcaliph.com/balam-ibn-baura/ http://www.slideshare.net/zakir2012/the-world-of-jinn-devils -> (Pg 42 or 48, depending upon how reader counts the pages. A plain-text format of the file's words is below that webpage) Remember me in your Duas too. JazakAllah Khair.

  21. The memory of water By Dr Abbas and Dr Israh Tejani "And among His Signs is that …He sends down water from the sky, and therewith revives the earth after its death. Verily, in that are indeed signs for a people who understand." (Holy Qur’an 30:24) Water is a simple substance that is often taken for granted. Yet through its intricate properties, its existence allows life, as every living being in this world contains water. The human being is made up of 70% water, much like the world itself. A theory was put forward in 1988 by Jacques Beneviste that water is capable of having a memory, a theory that was subsequently rigorously tested by hundreds of experiments, majority of which confirmed this hypothesis. Recently in Japan, Dr. Emoto performed an experiment where he put some normal tap water into several test tubes. He then said different words, blowing into a different test tube each time he had said a different word. He subsequently used an electron microscope to see the shape of the crystalline structure of the water in each test tube, and compared it to the pictures he had taken before. The results were astonishing, for the shape of the water changed depending on what word was said – it “remembered” the word. Other studies have shown that the shape of water can have a great impact on the body – a good shape can help restore or keep the body in a state of health, whilst a bad shape can lead to many diseases, one of which is cancer. This idea is extremely relevant to some of the things we have been taught in Islam. As a child I was always taught the importance of saying “Bismillah” before eating or drinking anything. Dr. Emoto found that the word “God” transformed the water into a beautiful shape. As 70% of the human body is made up of water, and a lot of our foods contain water, saying “bismillah” before eating will help to change not only the crystalline shape of what we are about to consume into a nice, harmonious structure, but also help to refine the cells in our body, helping us become stronger against disease. As I was growing up, I used to see my mother blow into a glass of water after reciting duas, something that is highly emphasised in Islam. We are sometimes even taught to wash ayaats of the Holy Qur’an and to drink this water. It is natural to question this practice, as at first sight it does not seem to make logical sense. However, the impact that reciting dua has on the shape of the water molecule was tested by Dr. Emoto. The pictures below illustrate his findings. We see that after the dua was recited, the water changed into a beautiful, symmetrical shape. Through this, we can begin to understand why reciting du’as or the Holy Qur’an upon water can provide us with a cure. In fact, there has recently been much discussion and research regarding ‘digital biology.’ This is where waves are fired at a drug from a transmitter, and the scattering pattern of the waves is then collected at the receiver. The waves that are collected at the receiver are then fired at a glass of water, and the patient asked to drink it. A study conducted by Thomas found that treating a human breast tumour in mice with water that had been transformed in this way from the audio signal of Taxol® (usually used to treat breast cancer) showed just as much statistical significance as treating it with the drug itself (ie, it was just as beneficial as taking the drug itself) It is only natural that we then turn and think about the events that took place on the 10th of Muharram. Hazrat Abbas (as) took a handful of water from the Euphrates, looked into it and then threw it down. However, his influence upon the water was so great that the Euphrates now remains in constant circumambulation (tawaaf) around his grave. In addition to this, Dr. Emoto found that saying the word ‘peace’ over the water gave it an almost perfect shape. If we cast our minds back to the moment when Imam Hussain (as) was delivering his last will to Imam Sajjad (as), we realise the wisdom of his words when he said: “When my shi’a drink a cool glass of water, tell them to send me their salaam.” In trying to look for the perfect crystalline structure of water, Dr. Emoto stumbled upon the perfect combination, which is love plus gratitude. Just one of these is not enough. Love needs to be based in gratitude, and gratitude needs to be based in love. The Holy Qur’an tells us time and time again to continue giving thanks for what we have, and we can now begin to see the wisdom behind that command. Sometimes, when we cannot see the immediate results of our prayers, we think that we have failed. But one thing that Dr. Emoto's photographs show is that the mere thought of failure itself becomes represented in the physical objects that surround us. Upon reading this short article, perhaps we can begin to realise that even when immediate results are invisible to the unaided human eye, they are there. When we love our own bodies, they respond. When we express our love to God and other fellow human beings, they respond. And now we have seen before our eyes the proof that water is far from inanimate – it is actually alive and responsive to our every thought and emotion. Perhaps, having seen this, we can begin to really understand the tremendous power that we possess, and through choosing our thoughts and intentions, we can heal ourselves and the earth. If only we believe. “The cure is within you but you do not see. The illness is from you but you do not realise. Do you think you are but an insignificant mass, whilst within you lies a great universe?”-- Imam Ali (as)
