I was raised Sunni but after reading Henry Corbin (a scholar of Islamic gnosis and its various speculative traditions, particularly in Iran), the knot of dogma was loosened in my mind, and the outward form of Islam (its legal and doctrinal elements) felt superfluous compared to the kernel of esoteric wisdom contained in the writings of Ibn Arabi, Haydar Amuli, Mulla Sadra, Suhrawardi, Ahmad Ahsa'i, etc.... I abandoned prayer, I abandoned dhikr, I even abandoned the Qur'an, as I spent months reading the Hebrew Bible looking for some kind of perennial religious wisdom. After reading Shaykh Muhammad Husayn Tabatabai's exposition on Shi'ite Islam, I want to return to the normative fold but I feel like the structure of my mind is utterly changed now, as in I'm not satisfied by the basic categories of religious thought anymore. Prayer, dhikr, the Qur'an, etc., it feels like the meaning of these rituals has totally changed for me. How can I become a normal Muslim when I've been drinking from the fountain of oriental spirituality for more than a year now, without the rigor of systematic learning which would've probably saved me from what was blatant apostasy on my part?

I would like a recommendation for books, outside of the Noble Qur'an, for a non muslim that is considering Islam and becoming a shia in particular. I am particularly looking for good books on Prayer, SHia Spirituality, Lifestyle, and Theology. Is there a good english translation of shia hadith in a hardbound set?

Greetings, I have been curious about Islam for 8 years and have honestly fallen in love with the Twelver branch of Shia Islam, and want to convert. However every other site I visit seems more interested in dissuading me from Shiism than actually helping me convert. Any help or tips would be loved. Thanks.

Why is the Shia Prayer different to the way Sunnis pray ?

I did a quick search, and it looks like this doesn't have a thread of its own yet. "In A Nutshell - Fact Sheets About Islam and Shi'ism" http://www.al-islam.org/nutshell/ is very good for introductory & summary info, and can be helpful in case people get asked about certain topics (like from Sunni Muslims or non-Muslims).

Salam. The Holy Qur'aan constitutes on two fundamental components; it's Tanzeel (Revelation) and Taweel (Exegesis). The Tanzil of the Holy Qur'aan is the revelation of it's verses and it's Taweel is the exegesis of those verses. Both components are combined together to complete the Holy Qur'aan and each one is dependent on the other. Moreover, one cannot be separated from the other in a sense that, one cannot conduct the Taweel (Exegesis) of the Qur'aan if there was no Tanzeel (Revelation) of it, because if we were to assume there was no Tanzeel, then there could not be any Taweel performed since there would be no verses to conduct the Taweel of to begin with. Like wise for the other way around, that is; if the Tanzeel of the Qur'aan occurred but there was no Taweel conducted on it, then the Holy Qur'aan would be an ambiguous codex scripture which cannot be understood to benefit mankind. With that being said, up to this point, we can affirm that the Holy Qur'aan does not consist of solely the Tanzeel, but rather it has both the Tanzeel along with Taweel working hand in hand to complete. Salam. Followers of Ahmad al-Hassan (l.a.) claim, that the book of Sheikh al-Saduq (ra) contains the statement "from Yemen" only inside the brackets. The truth is, that there are two different hadith in the book "Kamal al-din wa-tamam al-ni'mah" which mention "Yamani" and only one of the narrations contain "from Yemen" inside the brackets, the other one is clear. Read here: http://shia-rafidah.com/articles/81-brackets-from-yemen.html#.VFDuBfmG98E There are also multiple authentic hadith, which mention, ''and the emergence of al-Yamani from Yemen with the white flags'' You can read them here: http://shia-rafidah.com/tags/Yamani+from+Yemen/#.VFDuv_mG98E And the great Shia scholar in the field of hadith; Muhaddith al-Nūrī at-Ṭabarsī has mentioned in his book; ''Nafas al-Raḥmān fī faḍāʼil Salmān'', that Yamani is from Yemen. Salam. Necessity For Allah's [swt] Proof Upon Earth The opponents of the followers of the Ahlulbayt (a.s) protest that the Shi'a consider the Imam necessary in order to present and explain the injunctions and importance of religion and to guide the people, thus occultation of the Imam (a.s) is the negation of this very purpose, for an Imam in occultation who cannot be reached by mankind cannot be in any way beneficial or effective. It must be said that such people have not really understood the meaning of the Imam. The role of the Imam is not only the explanation of the religious sciences and external guidance of the people. But the Imam also bears the function of "Walayah" and the internal guidance of the human. Read here: http://www.revisitingthesalaf.org/2014/10/imam-al-mahdi-ajf-part-ii.html
