Salam How do you spend Ramadan differently from the rest of the months? Do you recite any special Dua or offer prayers, or do you regularly recite Qur'an? What does your day look like, and what goals do you set for yourself during the month for Ramadan?

Salem aleykum brothers and sisters, Please bear with me as I have afew things to get through. Discussing this topic is quite intimidating and embarrassing, hence why I haven't managed to pluck up the courage to seek out help and knowledge untill now. And I would like it if you were a little considerate with your answers please, Thank you. So, my topic is Janaba from masturbation. It all started around a year ago when I first started this bad habit, it was out of curiosity initially but eventually became an addiction. At that time of the year I was in a very depressed state, often thinking about suicide ( for no particular reason.) The urge was strong but I never went ahead with it because I did not want to think that I have become hopeless of my creator. I was aware that suicide was haram and it is irreversible. So, i would often just try and find ways to feel better to get rid of those thoughts. and I guess that's where the idea of masturbation came from ( since medically it's seen as stress relieving etc.) Though I knew masturbation is haram but I had to weigh up the odds of it taking me out of that mindset of suicide (which is irreversable)(and yes i know there are better ways but barely anything worked for me at the time) And it was only intended as temporary thing. But it became a horrible addiction pretty soon that continued for the past year. It started to make me depressed even more because I knew I was disobeying Allah ÓÈÍÇäå æÊÚÇáì and prayed for help +repented. But after a while I gave up. Because even after I would repent out of guilt and said I wouldn't do it, I did it again. Nonetheless, I eventually managed to cut down the activity (pretty much stopped it) but then again I can never be to sure of myself. All I am sure of is that I want to do whatever I can to compensate for my actions so they may be pardoned. I know that closeness to Allah (Praises be to him) is the only thing that can give me peace in its entirety. Alhamdulilah, this Ramadan has been a blessing and really healing for me so far. However, I made the mistake again last night after a streak of going quite a long time without it(for me.) If there is any time of the year to kick evil habits it is Ramadan. Inshallah, I will continue to try. If you if you have any Duas, recommendations etc for this sort of thing, that would be really helpful. Now for my real question: all of this past year that I have been praying etc is without ghusl of Janaba. My fasts up untill now were without them too. Its not that i lack islamic knowledge generally, I do often seek it and practice it. However, I never came across Janaba in regards to woman doing them. I didn't know State of Janaba was a thing! Im not that old to be married. it's not a topic that is taught to young girls because I guess it is assumed they will do not masturbate. (Unlike males where it is kind of expected of them so they are prewarned about it.) Even online there isn't much about females in this sort of area. Firstly I'm still unsure and confused, can a female enter state of Janaba through masturbation? If so that means that I have been impure while doing my fasts and prayers up untill now. I am concerned as to what I should do about the fasts i have kept this Ramadan so far. Do they count? Should I make up for them? What about my salah? A whole year worth of my salah is invalidated? Do I have to redo them? Bearing in mind I didn't start regularly praying till like 14/15 or so. (Wasn't religious/ didn't understand my religion well) though alhamdulillah God guided me eventually and discover the sweeteness of salah. I have always intended to makeup those 5 years but don't know how and never got around to it. And now will another year's worth be added on to it? How can I make it possible to complete them with every day responsibilities like School, work etc. I apologise for the lengthy post but the reason why I described everything was maybe if any of you find faults in my thinking or ways maybe able to point out and help. Help a sister out of ignorance. Thank you for your time and may Allah send his mercy and blessings on all of you and your families this Ramadan. Inshallah

Does anyone know where to look for the announcement of Ramadan? Previous year I was checking najaf.org, will they announce it this year too? I don't see any message on the homepage like previous year. Also if anyone wants, lets use this as the Ramadan 2021 thread and let us help each other get the most out of this holy month insa'allah.

(salam) and Eid Mubarak everyone, Could anyone please shed some light on the following narrations in Man La Yahdurhu al-Faqih vol.2 pg 169-70: ." وفي رواية محمد بن سنان عن حذيفة بن منصور عن أبي عبدالله عليه السلام قال: " شهر رمضان ثلاثون يوما لا ينقص أبدا And from Muhammad ibn Sinaan's narration from Huzaifa bin Mansoor from Abi Abdullah [a] who said: "The month of Ramadan is 30 days and will not be ever fewer [that that]". ." وفي رواية حذيفة بن منصور عن معاذ بن كثير ويقال له: معاذ بن مسلم الهراء عن أبي عبدالله عليه السلام قال: " شهر رمضان ثلاثون يوما لا ينقص والله أبدا And from Huzaifa ibn Mansoor's narrations from Mu`aaz ibn Katheer also called as Mu`aaz ibn Muslim al-Hurra` from Abi Abdullah [a]: "The month of Ramadan will be 30 days and not ever fewer [than that], by Allah". ." وسأل أبوبصير أبا عبدالله عليه السلام " عن قول الله عزوجل " ولتكملوا العدة " قال: ثلاثين يوما Inquired Abu Baseer from Abu Abdullah [a] about the word of Allah 'and you complete the number' so he replied: "30 days". ." وروي عن ياسر الخادم قال: قلت للرضا عليه السلام: " هل يكون شهر رمضان تسعة وعشرين يوما؟ فقال: إن شهر رمضان لا ينقص من ثلاثين يوما أبدا Narrated from Yasir al-Khadim who said that I said to [imam] al-Ridha [a], "Is the month of Ramadan of 29 days?", and he said, 'The month of Ramadan will not ever be fewer than 30 days'. (the above is a note by Shaykh Sadooq [rh] which I would better have someone else translate as I am a bit confused about what it is saying at the end about doing Taqiyyah, but the Shaykh seems to agree with the view than Shahr Ramadan can not be less than 30 days) What is the general opinion of the rest of the 'ulema on this? I apologize in advance for any errors in translation. I'm not exceptionally good at it. (salam)

I would like to understand what determines a month being 29 or 30 days. Is there a logic behind it ? Being a complete ignorant, I would think it is all about a sighting issue : two countries beginning a month on a same day, if one sees the moon at the end of the month then it may be 29, whereas the second country will wait, making it 30. So some kind of 'tolerance' given by the Prophet (sawas). All that so 12 months can fit in a 354/355-day year. Am I correct ?

Assalamu Alaykum Brothers and Sisters, Hope that you are all having a great Ramadan! I have to make up some days of Ramadans in the past (2019 & 2020). I read that I have to make up these days before the following Ramadan. However, I'm not able to make up these days now. Is it possible that I make up these days at a later time in my life? I'm really looking forward to your answers! Wassalam, T

Salam guys, Quick question, i woke up, looked at my phone to see if there was prayer and I looked at the wrong column and thought I was fairly early so I decided to have a quick suhoor before prayer came. I finished, looked back on the calender because i just didn’t feel something was right, then i realised i was looking at the wrong column all that time and that prayer was NOW and it was already there when I woke up Thats issue #1, am I in trouble for that or something? Issue #2, when spitting out the food from my mouth, there was food stuck between my teeth which i had to also use my tongue to help remove them, does that count as breaking my fast?

Salam, I had a question regarding missed days of fasting. I had a combined total of 121 days of fasting missed from the year 2010 to the year 2015. I had intentionally not fasted. I have been fasting every Ramadan since the year 2016. I started to make up the days that I missed starting in the year 2016, before the Ramadan of 2016, and was able to complete all 121 missed days before the start of Ramadan for the year 2019. I have not done anything else to make up my fasts other than fasting the days that I missed. What exactly is my kaffarah? I am a muqallid of Ayatollah Sistani. I went on Ayatollah Sistani’s website to figure out what exactly I had to do in order to become current on my fasts, but I got confused. I would really appreciate it if I can get guidance on what I exactly need to do. I regret not fasting on those days and I would like to fix it. Thank you.

Click here to view this message in a browser window. In the Name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful Predicting the Crescent Moon of the Month of Ramadan 1441, A.H. To the respected believers in North America, Peace be upon you. According to astronomical data, the predominant possibility for the first day of the blessed month of Ramadan this year will be on Saturday, April 25, 2020 for all regions of North America. (See visibility curve below.) For the believers residing in Southern California and regions in the vicinity, there is a very low possibility of sighting the crescent moon in San Diego during the sunset of Thursday, April 23rd. If sighted, this would make Friday the beginning of the month for those areas only. We hope that the respected believers will patiently wait for the announcement by the Crescent Committee of the Council of Shia Muslim Scholars of North America, which will be issued late Thursday. May the peace, mercy, and blessings of God be upon you. On behalf of the Crescent Committee, Sayyid M. This is only one of the many poems of Mawlana Jalaluddin Balkhi/Rumi on Fasting: What hidden sweetness there is in this emptiness of the belly! Man is surely like a lute, no more and no less; For if, for instance, the belly of the lute becomes full, no lament high or low will arise from that full lute. If your brain and belly are on fire through fasting, because of the fire every moment a lament will arise from your breast. Every moment you will burn a thousand veils by that fire; you will mount a hundred steps with zeal and endeavor. Become empty of belly, and weep entreatingly like the reed pipe; become empty of belly, and tell secrets with the reed pen. If your belly is full at the time of concourse, it will bring Satan in place of your reason, an idol in place of the Kaaba. When you keep the fast, good manners gather together before you like slaves and servants and retinue. Keep the fast, for that is Solomon’s ring; give not the ring to the dıv, destroy not your kingdom. Even if your kingdom has gone from your hand and your army has fled, your army will rise up, pennants flying above them. The table arrived from heaven to the tents of the fast, by the intervention of the prayers of Jesus, son of Mary. In the fast, be expectant of the table of bounty, for the table of bounty is better than the broth of cabbages.

Salaam Alaikum, I had a question please about fasting. Since I started fasting 13 days ago every single day I get gagging (feel to vomit but nothing coming out) throughout the fast 3-4 times a day at least. On Saturday I threw up after my fast and didn’t fast on Monday. I started fasting again yesterday and the same problem is happening. Please can you advise me on what I shall do? Thank you so much.

Hello. I am a Sunni and I have noticed that that Shias' Sahoor time ends before Sunnis and their Iftar ends after Sunnis. My question is, what method is used to find out the timings of Ramadan Iftar and Sahoor in Shia Islam ? Thanks.

Assalamu Aleykom brothers and sisters, I was searching for a list of recommended practices of Ramadan. I'm still young so I didn't know what kind of mustahab acts I could do, this is my first serious Ramadan. I did not find such a list though. But I did find an article on wikishia but, for me at least, it was hectic. I prefer a file with all the text and practices within it... so I made one! I took me a lot of time to make it but... alhamdulillah. Almost all was taken from wikishia so you can go there if you prefer that: http://en.wikishia.net/view/Practices_of_Ramadan Please let me know if I made any errors or if you have any suggestions. Feel free to share it, print it whatever! Ramadan mubarak to all, may Allah hear out all your prayers and forgive all of your sins. ~File download~

I reverted to Islam in December 2006. I have been doing ghusl wrong all these years by ignorance, not from laziness. I would make niyyat and wash my body, but never knew I had to wet my hair. So, because of my ignorance, do I have to do over, to make up and redo all my prayers of the past and all my fasts of the months of Ramadhan for the past 6 years? Jazakallah khairan for your answer! (wasalam)

Its still early in the morning and there is 12 more hours and a half left to fast, but I’m leaving to go to work soon and will be there for most of the day. I already feel faint and because of the physical activity at work, I fear that I will pass out. Is this a valid enough reason to drink some water and break my fast without having to to kaffarah? Can I just fast it qatha?

As a part of our annual tradition here on ShiaChat, we're making this thread to serve as a repository for Ramadan-themed lectures given by our Shi'I scholars during this holy month of Ramadhan, in the 1440th year after hijra (or 2019 on the Gregorian calendar). Share lectures of whatever language you understand, but please do strive to keep them limited to the Ramadan and pre-Ramadan lectures of this year! For previous years, feel free to browse through the links below and get back into the Ramadan mood!

https://metro.co.United Kingdom/2019/05/10/Ramadan-is-my-chance-to-be-a-Muslim-woman-on-my-own-terms-9462936/ Saw this article and thought that it would be interesting to see how you would respond to the question 'Ramadhan is my chance to...' Personally, Ramadhan is my chance to connect with Allah and feel proud of my religion in a time when we are made to feel ashamed and inferior all the time. So, what does Ramadhan give you a chance to do or be?

The Shia community in the Netherlands suddenly changed the calculation method of the prayer times (switching to the Islamic istitute of hamburg) and fajr is halfway through Ramadan at 2:00 am now (it would have been 3:11 on the same day with the old calculation method) So I wondered how long do you guys fast and where do you live. And I was questioning who do I have to follow cause according to the local (Shia) mosque fajr would still be at 3:11 but the majority of the Shia community agreed on the calculation method of hamburg .

I changed from Sunni to Shia a few months ago. I understand that the exact moment of sunset is not the right time for maghrib and iftar as I think it is that the the orb of light of the sun also needs to go down. I have been adding ten minutes to sunset for maghrib up to this point but I would like to be more precise for iftar. I do not have a local Shia centre as I live in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Also I don't know anywhere I can see the sun set without buildings being in the way. Thanks, for your help.
