  1. Al salamo alaykom Addham Allah Ajrakum Wa Ahsan Aza'akum bi muzab Imam Al Hussein (as) I woke up this morning to the smell of fried onions all over the house. I hurried to the kitchen and saw mom cooking a soup-like food (Qima), donating it to the Husseiniya. She said during Muharram all the Shia Muslims around the world do the same. It's called making Nazri/äÐÑ, and while mixing the food we can make wishes in the name of Imam Hussain (as) , hopefully in future God will fulfill them. Unfortunately, I'm really bad at cooking and couldn't help much expect of stirring the pot with a long wooden spoon and making hundreds of wishes. :angel: Do Shia Muslims in other countries really believe in this thing? - Large Qima pot - Fried Onion - Mom run out of onions, I went out to buy her more. - It's still a mystery to me, how to know if an onion is BAD? Mmm they never taught us that in school... - This is how a mashed (Qima) looks like... Brother helping too! <3 Making dua mashallah... Tralalalal almost finished Qima! just don't ask me for the recipe. Mom tried to explain, but it's all too complicated.. :huh: If you know other types of Nazri, please post it here!

  3. I was just wondering if there are any sisters from Sydney, Australia or Australia in general that are attending The Annual Ashura Procession in Sydney CBD? I ask as I am a fairly recent revert to Islam alhumdulilah and I dont have any family or friends who are muslim to accompany me there so there may be another sister in the same situation as me? Completely fine if not but would be great to meet new people inshallah in such a sad month. Thank you.

  5. Suppose the birthday of any of your non-believer acquaintances or friends falls in the month of Muharram, would it be disrespectful to wish them ? I mean, I never celebrate my own birthday if it falls in muharram nor does anyone else in my family, but you know, if you know someone really well, and they don't know about muharram and they create this huge celebration atmosphere on your birthday and you don't even wish them on their's it becomes a bit...awkward.. I am not talking about taking part in celebrations, just a plain wish...by the way, her birthday is after chehlum... should I or should I not? I know, there is no compulsion, but what would you do?

  7. salam everyone Today at school a friend asked me if i was shi3i , i replied yes ofcourse , everything was fine until it got to the latom part. She wanted to know more about the shi3a and all she knew was that shi3a beat themselves... I explained that we observe Ashura as the day of martyrdom of Hussein ibn Ali, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad at the Battle of Karbala. Shia Muslims therefore consider this a day of sorrow and grief. The problem was that i was extremely upset relising what people really thought about us . :'( what could i have said?
  8. Came across this on wiki, was interesting to see that such a festival is celebrated among Muslim and non-Muslim communities alike in Guyana and other countries in the West Indies... Hosay or Tadjah is a West Indian commemoration, in which multi-colored model mausoleums are paraded, then ritually offered up to the sea, or any body of water. Some contemporary writers equate the multi-colored mausoleums with "mosques." In British Guiana, now Guyana, and Suriname, the festival was called Taziya or creolized into Tadjah in reference to these floats, the most visible and decorative element of this festival. In nineteenth-century Trinidad newspapers as well as government reports called Hosay the "Coolie Carnival."[1] The Hosay (derived from Husayn or Hussein) celebration is a Caribbean manifestation of the Shia Muslim Remembrance of Muharram in Trinidad and Tobago[2] and Jamaica[3] (where is it spelled Hussay). The name Hosay comes from "Husayn" (also spelled "Hussein", the grandson of Muhammad) who was assassinated by Yazid in Karbala. This marytrdom is commemorated in the festival. In Trinidad and Tobago it is primarily celebrated in Saint James, in northwestern Trinidad and in Cedros in southwestern Trinidad. Recently it has been revived elsewhere. In the 1950s, very elaborately decorated models of mosques made of paper and tinsel called "tadjahs" were carried through the streets to the accompaniment of constant drumming. Small fires were lit in the gutters beside the streets over which the drumskins were heated to tighten the skins of the tassa drums. Mock stick fights celebrate the martyrdom of Husayn ibn Ali. The festival lasts three days ending with the throwing of the tadjahs into the sea at sunset on the third day. Although Hosay is a religious event for Shias, all of Trinidad's religious and ethnic communities participate in it, and it has become accepted as part of the national culture. The Remembrance of Muharram was brought to the Caribbean by Shia Muslim indentured labourers and other migrant laborers from India. Hindu and Muslim Indians, who emphasized their common culture and celebration over religion, namely from the provinces of Oudh and City of Lucknow, are essential to this story. These people entered Guyana in 1838, and Trinidad after 1845, from colonial India under British auspices (see Indo-Caribbean people). The first observance of Hosay in Trinidad has been traced back to 1854, eleven years after the first indentured laborers arrived from India. In the 1880s the British colonial authorities became increasingly concerned about public gatherings, and in 1884 issued an ordinance to prevent the public Hosay commemorations. Thousands of workers, who had spent the year building their tadjahs joined a Hindu named Sookhoo, in petitioning the government to allow the festival per their agreement with the Governor, who was visiting London during this episode. When all appeals were ignored by the Protector of Immigrants, through ignorance of the new July 1884 prohibition, defiance, or both, the tadjahs were taken onto the streets at the appointed time, and in order of the estates. The first estate that took its tadjah onto the street had earned that right over the past months, and in some towns, Hosay went ahead. In Port-of-Spain (St. James) the police did not interfere, but in Mon Repos, San Fernando, on Thursday, October 30, 1884, buckshot was fired into the crowds of women, children and men.. After shots were fired by the police to disperse the procession, 22 "Indians" were killed immediately. Later, 120 were found with injuries, some of whom had run into the cane fields, to hide during the police attack. That day is commonly referred to in Trinidad history as the Muhurram Massacreby Indians and as the Hosay Riots in British and colonial records. The North Indian city of Lucknow and the Indian State of Oudh are more important than the Middle East in understanding this Trinidad public celebration. The Caribbean East Indian festival, "Hosay" (or "Muhurram") came to the Americas from India in the early nineteenth century. It remained a pan-Indian phenomenon (meaning crossing religious, racial and linguistic lines). Hosay reached out to also include other Trinidadians, African and Creoles. The origins of Muhurram in Persia (Iran) are important, but in Trinidad, Guyana and Jamaica, the street festival is broader than a Shi'a Muslim (or sectarian) commemoration of the lives and deaths of Islamic prophet Muhammad's grandsons, Hussein and Hasan. The pious shouting out of these names, "Hussein" and "Hasan" allowed the conflation of the Indian names with that of the festival, but provided a direct connection to these role-models for ordinary (and downtrodden) Trinidadians. In Trinidad, Indian Muslims and Hindus, and African co-workers, joined in the street parade that was open to white spectators also. Many revelers and spectators failed to see the spiritual side of this ten-day observance, especially the nine days of fasting and prayer that preceded the street celebration on Ashura, the tenth day. (In 1990, this social scientist interviewed Mr. Harry in Tunapuna, Trinidad, a Hindu who fasts throughout the ten days of the first month, Muhurram of the Muslim Calendar, while preparing for the street parade.) Indeed, Hosay was transformed by and for the plantation workers: the deaths of Hussein and Hasan symbolized their own exile and sacrifices in a harsh, sometimes socially desolate landscape, of new worlds and socieites. The colonial authorities came to see the Hosay as a threat and used massive force to quell it and keep it off the streets beginning in the 1880s. With the onset of struggles for independence since the Second World War, many East Indians (Indo-Trinidadians) and fellow Creoles have again broadened the appeal of this Trinidad festival. It has survived colonialism and efforts at suppressing its unique voice for all workers, free and bonded, and their descendents in Trinidad. There are similarities and differences in the history and current meanings of Hosay across the Caribbean. In Jamaica, Indian-Jamaicans celebrate Hosay.   9. Salam, Until today, I had been told Hazrat Ali Asghar (a.s) was a 6 month old baby on the day of Ashura. However, today I heard a lecture by Sayed Ammar Nakshawani who claims Hazrat Ali Asghar (a.s) was actually either 7 or 12 years old. listen from 32 minutes onwards... Has anyone else heard this?

Regarding the Almighty’s words in Sura-e-Baqara, Verse 84-86: و اذ اخذنا ميثاقكم لا تسفكون دماءكم و لا تخرجون انفسكم من دياركم ثم اقررتم و انتم تشهدون ثم هولاء تقتلون انفسكم و تخرجون فريقا منكم من ديارهم تظاهرون عليهم بالاثم و العدوان و ان ياتوكم اسري تفادوهم و هو محرم عليكم اخراجهم افتومنون ببعض الكتاب و تكفرون ببعض فما جزاء من يفعل ذلك منكم الا خزي في الحيوه الدنيا و يوم القامۀ يردون الي اشد العذاب و مالله بغافل عما تعملون اوليك الذين اشتروا الحيوه الدنيا بالاخره فلايخفف عنهم العذاب و لا هم ينصرون "And when We made a covenant with you: You shall not shed your blood and you shall not turn your people out of your cities; then you gave a promise while you witnessed. Yet you it is who slay your people and turn a party from among you out of their homes, backing each other up against them unlawfully and exceeding the limits; and if they should come to you, as captives you would ransom them - while their very turning out was unlawful for you. Do you then believe in a part of the Book and disbelieve in the other? What then is the reward of such among you as do this but disgrace in the life of this world, and on Judgment Day they shall be sent back to the most grievous chastisement, and Allah is not at all heedless of what you do. These are they who buy the life of this world for the hereafter, so their chastisement shall not be lightened, nor shall they be helped." When this verse was revealed about Jews who broke promises and slew their prophets and apostles, the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) said: Do you want me to inform you about those from my Ummah who will be like these Jews? The companions said: O Allah’s Messenger, tell us. His Eminence (s.a.w.s.) said: There will be some people in my Ummah who will claim to be on my religion but inspite of this they would kill the greatest personalities of my progeny and the purest ones of my family. They will change my laws and traditions and slay my two sons, Hasan and Husain (a.s.). The forefathers of these Jews slew Zakariya and Yahya (a.s.). Know that, just as Allah cursed those Jews, in the same way would He curse these people. And for the future generation of them, He would send a Hadi Mahdi (rightful guide) from the progeny of Husain (a.s.) before Qiyamat who would dispatch them to Hellfire with the help of his friends’ swords. Know that, Allah curses those who remain quiet and do not curse the murderers of Husain (a.s.) and associates of murderers. May Allah have mercy on those who weep on this oppressed one, curse his enemies and remain furious with them. O people, listen! Those who are pleased with the martyrdom of Husain (a.s.) and are also included among his killers. And listen! Those who follow Husain’s (a.s.) enemies and their associates, they all are disgusted of the religion of Allah. Almighty Allah orders His proximate angels to collect tears of people who weep in sorrow of Husain (a.s.) and take them to the treasurer of Paradise. They take those tears and mix them with the water of the spring, due to which it becomes a thousand times sweeter and delicious. Those who become happy on the martyrdom of Imam Husain (a.s.) and laugh at it, the angels take their tears to Hawiya and mix them with its hot water and pus so that its temperature and severity increase. When the enemies of Aale Muhammad (a.s.) enter Hell, due to this, they will be involved in a more severe chastisement. Imam Hasan Al-Askari (as) includes the performance of Ziyarat-e-Arba’een as one of the five marks for a believer, in addition to reciting 51 raka of sala, audible recitation of Bismillah, wearing a ring on one’s right hand, and doing sajda on dust. (This hadith has been narrated by Sheikh Tusi in the book Tahthib). Why is so much importance given to the performance of the Ziyarat of Arba’een and the observance of Arba’een (40 days of mourning)? Ziyarat, as we all know is a visitation, which in essence, is the act of speaking with and visiting our role models. Of course the physical manifestation of the ziyarat is actually being present in Kerbala to perform the Ziyarat of Arba’een, but, in reality, that is not possible for every believer. So does making ziyarat while not in Kerbala give one the same benefits? Ahadith tell us that performing the Ziyarat of Imam Hussain (as) far from Kerbala would hold the same significance as being in the land of Kerbala, as long as the person performing the Ziyarat has truly understood the status of the Imam and seeks to emulate him. Imam Muhamed al-Baqir (as) states that the heavens wept over Imam Hussain (as) for forty mornings, rising red and setting red. As we complete 40 days of remembrance of our Imam, we re-assert our pledge of obedience and loyalty to him, “I bear witness that you are the Imam (who is) the upright, the pious, well-pleased (with Allah), the pure, the guide and the rightly-guided. I bear witness that you fulfilled the pledge of Allah and you struggled in His way…I am a friend of whoever befriends him ...” By performing the Ziyarat of Arba’een, we pledge that we will continue to follow the path of justice and righteousness and will reject injustice and speak up against the oppressors of the time, I am an enemy of whoever is his enemy. In essence, we make a promise to continue to mold our lives according to the teaching of Imam Hussain (as). But why is it that we mourn and remember Imam Hussain (as) for a period of forty days and then move on? Our Prophet has said, “The earth mourns the death of a believer for forty mornings.” Therefore it appears that the deceased should be remembered and mourned over for a period of forty days. Performing an act for a continuous period of forty days is also known to help one to not just form a habit, but also to carry on the practice for the rest of his life. If we look at studies dealing with bringing a lifestyle change, we notice the time period emphasized to bring about a change is usually 6 weeks which is about the same time period as 40 days (to be exact it is 42 days). In the book 40 Days to Personal Revolution: A Break through Program to Radically Change Your Body and Awaken the Sacred Within Your Soul, the author Baron Baptiste explains the significance of forty days: Why forty days? Because the number 40 holds tremendous spiritual significance in the realm of transformation. Jesus wandered in the desert for forty days in order to experience purification and come to a greater understanding of himself and his mission. Moses and his people traveled through the desert for forty years before arriving at their home in the holy land. Noah preserved the sacredness of life by sailing his ark for forty days and forty nights. According to the Kabbalah, the ancient Jewish mystical text, it takes forty days to ingrain any new way of being into our system…. Reciting particular duas for a period of 40 days is highly recommended in our practices as well. The unit 40 (forty) is said to be very effective. If a particular Duaa is recited 40 times, or 40 people gather to recite it, or it is recited for 40 days then its effectiveness is highly increased. (Duas.org) It is reported from Imam Ja'fer Sadiq (as) that whoever recites Dua-e-Ahad for forty days, after morning prayers will be amongst the helpers of the 12th Imam (as). Visitation of the shrine of Imam Hussain (as) as well as Masjid-e-Sahla for 40 consecutive Thursdays is also very highly recommended and is one of the acts that promises a visit from the 12th Imam (May God hasten his honorable revelation). Thus, as we perform the Ziyarat of Arba’een and commemorate the Arba’een, 40 days of mourning of Imam Hussain (as), we hope and pray that this forty days of remembrance of Imam Hussain (as), brings about a transformation in us by which we can continue to follow the path of Imam Hussain (as) and carry on his message of upholding justice with true faith and a strong sense of sacrifice! - A’maal of Muharram and Safar (Tayyiba Publishers) - Kerbala and Beyond by Yasin T. It is a beautiful recitation done by Mahmood Amarsi in Farsi. We thank him for the recitation and for providing us with the translation along with the transliteration of the entire Nauha.   16. Salam Alykum. So I've gotten some questions and hadiths put in front of me that says that doing matam is not allowed. Can someone please explain it to me? ' it is narrated from Imaam Ja’afar Saadiq that the Messenger of Allaah (sal-Allaahu ‘alayhe wa sallam) said, "A muslim beating his thighs at a time of difficulty is synonymous to wasting his deeds." Muhammad Baaqir said, "Whoever hit themselves, by slapping their faces and chests and pulling their hair then he has left patience and adopted a way other than Islaam and he is despicable. Allaah causes his good deeds to be wasted and whoever cried loudly is impatient which contradicts patience and this is unlawful". The Messenger of Allaah (sal-Allaahu ‘alayhe wa sallam) said to Faatimah (radi-Allaahu ‘anhu), "When I die do not cry over me, or pull your hair, or lament or mourn over me."( Furoo al-Kaafee, Kitaab an-Nikah (2/128) ) The Messenger of Allaah (sal-Allaahu ‘alayhe wa sallam) said at a time of difficulty do not hit your cheeks nor your faces, do not pull your hair, do not rip your clothes nor wear black clothes or lament and mourn( Furoo al-Kaafee, (2/128) ) Imaam Ja’afar Saadiq said, "Crying on the deceased with a loud voice and ripping ones clothes is not permissible( Furoo al-Kaafee (1/118). ) Alee (radi-Allaahu ‘anhu) said, "Whoever at a time of difficulty hit his thighs then his deeds will be wasted."( Nahj al-Balaaghah (2/224) Printed in egypt )
  17. Salaam, Can anyone please let me know some of the rules we're supposed to follow in the mourning period of Muharram (First ten days, then Ashura to Eid A Zehra). I already know most of them but I want to see what you guys do. Also, is hanging out with friends allowed? Answers will be appreciated.
