  1. Birthday of Sayyida Zainab bint Ali AS.  Congratulations.

Sayyida Zainab bint Ali (p) is reported to have said, that on the day [of judgment] a heavenly crier will announce:

"Praise be upon the Lord of the Worlds, and our beginning- with prosperity and salvation-and our end-with martyrdom and blessing. I beseech the Almighty to bestow upon them [Imam Hussain (p), his family (pbut), and his loyal companions] His best recompense and may [He] increase their rewards. O You, Who is just and righteous toward us, and Who is the most compassionate among all the compassionate ones, we put our trust only upon You.” (Shaykh al-Majlisi, Bihar al-Anwar, vol. 45, p. 133)

  2. The Moon-Sighting Committee of the Council of Shia Muslim Scholars of North America announces that Saturday, October 21st, 2017, will be the first day of the month of Safar, 1439 A.H. for the entire region of the United States and parts of Southern Canada.

This determination is based on the fact that there were reported sightings of the crescent moon by the naked eye during the sunset of Friday, October 20th 2017, from many locations.

We ask Almighty God for success in performing good deeds and hasten the Return of Our Master, Imam Mahdi (p).

  3. If you think, 'What's the big deal, whether today is 30 Muharram or 1 Safar?' The Arba'een of Imam Hussein AS is 20 Safar, so we need to know when Safar begins so that we can commemorate on the correct day.

Is it mustahab to fast in this day?

Yes. We have hadith about fasting on the Eid al Ghadir:

Fasting on the Day of Ghadir

It has been narrated from as-Sadiq [Imam Ja'far ibn Muhammad] (peace be upon him) that: “Fasting on the Day of Ghadir is equivalent to fasting the time span of the (existence of the) entire world – meaning that if a person were to live a life of the entire existence of the world and were to fast this whole time, the reward for this fasting would be equivalent to fasting (this one day of Ghadir).”

  5. Dhul-Hijjah 18 is Eid al-Ghadeer. Congratulations for the Great Eid, the day that Prophet Muhammad SA raised the hand of Imam Ali Ibn Abi Talib AS at Ghadir Khum and announced to Hajj pilgrims that Allah SWT appointed Ali Ibn Abi Talib (PBUH) as the guardian (Wali), the master (Mawla), the leader (Imam), and the commander (Amir) of all believing men and women, the deputy and the executor of his affairs (Wasi), and his successor (Khalifa). Salawat.
