Mousline is too heavy for some, the material my uncles and many of the Ulema I know prefer is called Voil( usually brought here from India). Some of the better material shops sell it, I have known some to sell it at 5 pounds a yard, keep in mind that a good length is 7 to 8 yards. So around 35 to 40 pounds can be spent. My eldest uncle still has his graduation Imamah, it is still wrapped from when it was placed on his head, he keeps it in a box, lol...... There are also some grades of cotton which some of the Ulema choose to use, usually they pick it up for anything ranging from 1 pound to 2 pounds fifty a yard.
You are right it is an art, and there are some really bad Imamah makers out there, I know in Qum some brothers do teach others how to make them, however some will not bother to learn the art and rely on others to make them, also the Lebanese have taken the art to a good level some of their scholars are excellent at the craft, I personally think their style although it is taken from the Najafi style is more pleasing to the eye.
May Allah bless all those who wear the Imamah with good behaviour and benefical knoweldge, as you can wear an Imamah and have neither.

The turban worn by our clerics is actually tied around the bended knee of one leg. The picture shown in the first post is done that way. The spiral effect is produced by alternating the spaces when the layer of the turban goes up. With your left hand hold on to the material (normally mousline) and guide the material around the knee with your right hand so that it goes from down up starting from the back of the knee and then down again. When it goes down leave a space of 2 or 3 cm from the place you first started. The end layers should be horizontal and the end tucked under the last horizontal layer. That's how I have seen it done but I know there are other techniques. Make sure you stretch the turban and flod it lengthwise before starting. If it is too stiff sprinkle some water. I hope this helps. Training makes perfect don't expect to get a perfect result straight away. Turban tying is an art in and of itself.

Just to let you know, that making a tail and placing it under the chin is a sunnah, it is called Tahta ul hanuk. my uncles said he will do it, I also asked anoter Shaykh who ties it really good to record someting also, but as it is Muharram and many are away reciting Majlish it will have to be done after that.

I have seen my Uncles tie their Imamah, and believe me they are not pre made! The cloth is usually 8 Yards long and is streched out with one person at each end holding the corners, then they begin to turn the cloth( the only way I can describe it ) so it becomes firm and compact. My oldest Uncle ties it on his knee after the cloth is rolled up into a firm package. He places a part under his left Knee and then begings to wind it around his knee, put here's the cute bit he makes a fold with each turn. This gives the spiral pattern. My other Uncles tie it on their head, which I understand is the Sunnah way! Again they are made from scratch, some are better than others at it,, I know that a few scholars bring theirs to my youngest Uncles and he makes about 6 or 8 at any given time. It is something to see.
Toi make a good Imamah takes about 20 or 30 minutes, there is the Qummi style and the Najafi styles, one of the best Imamahs I have seen apart from my eldest Uncles is Sayyid Milani, his is the Najafi style. The best Qummi style I have seen is actually by a Pakistani scholar sayyid Ali Raza Rizvi. I have not found any vidoes on the Shi'a way of making the Imamah, maybe I will ask one of my Uncles to do one and post it on Youtube,lol......

I had been interested in the blacks for sometime and had started to see a few black Shi'a. i see loads of black Sunnis, nothing new been in African countries. But never new there are so many black shi'as, and so many scholars, Mashallah. I jotted down their link. So i'm told Shiekh Zakariyyah is leading them, he was the first black shi'a i ever saw at Majma.
