  1. Salam all, I'm in the midst of exams so I'll be brief. Check this article out: http://www.flwi.ugent.be/cie/bogaert/bogaert4.htm It's been a while since I read it but the approach seems logical and rational. While it's important not to compromise our true beliefs simply because there is external pressure against them (i.e. Hijab), at the same time we must continually challenge and question interpretations of the Quran and Hadith as followers of Islam. It's our duty to never blindly follow - be it a translation, an explanation, or anything. The Quran puts it beautifully itself in 25:73 where it, when speaking of those whom Allah will reward, says: 'And they who when reminded of the communications of their Lord, do not fall down thereat deaf and blind'. God is instructing us to question everything, to the extent that He is even telling us not to hear a verse and fall down deaf and blind, but rather to think of it logically and understand it. Do not always accept what others tell you because they are 'more educated'. Yes, listen to their advice and appreciate their wisdom but always use your own logic and mind - Allah has instructed EACH one of us to question our beliefs, not just a select few. Let's strive to keep the name of Islam flying high and not doubt our faith or beliefs on the basis of misunderstandings, misinterpretations, or not using logic to our full capacity. Please respond to this post, but I will likely not check for a few days as I have exams until Wednesday. I apologize if i have offended anyone, that was not my intent.
  2. Salam everyone, I'm looking for a tafseer of the Quran online - audio is preferable, but text is fine too. Specifically, I'm looking for one from a Shi'a perspective. Also, I know of the partial al-Mizan available on al-islam.org so any others would be great. Jazakallah Khairun. Raza
  3. Salam, Actually we have the same times with our Ahl-e-Sunnah brothers for Fajr as the other two posts have mentioned. We being our Fajr salat a few minutes after the earliest glimpse of the sun is visible (civil twilight time). For Maghrib prayers it is not a matter of 'caution' but rather a matter of technicality. The Ahl-e-Sunnah brothers pray immediately after the disc of the sun is no longer visible in the horizon. At this point, however, there is still shades of light visible in the horizon even though the sun has descended below the horizon. The Quran, when referring to the time of prayers uses the word 'layl' which can be translated as "night" in english. We consider night not to be the same as sunset - as sunset is the time at which the sun physically sets and night is the time when darkness sets (approx 15mins after sunset). Hope this helps.
  4. Salam Alaikum all, I was wondering if anyone knows any online links (English) or books that are available in English which give the reasons for revelation of the verses of the Quran according to the Shi'a. To clarify, what I mean is that verse xyz was revealed after a certain incident. Do we have any Shi'a sources that say which verse was revealed after what event and/or for what reason. Jazakallah Khairun. Also, I'd like the entire Quran if possible (as I know Al-Mizan online only goes up to Ch4 I believe...) Raza
  5. Hey Akwa, Osama admitted it? When? Osama explicitly said after the event that he had no part in it. Then a few weeks/months later a video showed up with "Osama admitting it". This video: 1) Showed Osama as right-handed (he's left) - he's writing with his right hand in the video. FBI's website says he is left-handed: http://www.fbi.gov/wanted/terrorists/terbinladen.htm 2) He's wearing a gold ring and watch in the video. Muslim males don't wear gold - Osama seems pretty extreme, would he disobey such a clear ruling? 3) Watch the video. He looks NOTHING like the Osama in the other authentic videos or in his pictures that are found. ALL of this is in the Loose Change video. I honestly implore EVERYONE to watch it and then comment. It is interesting how people throw this off as a 'conspiracy theory' and so everyone just gets turned off by the idea. After watching the video you might wonder what the real conspiracy theory is... You don't have to believe it but at least watch it before criticizing. Some VERY interesting questions are raised. Just for starters: 1) The flight that hit the pentagon after bouncing off the front lawn: -why are there no markings of a jet landing on the lawn? -why is the hole made by this 747 jumbo jet only 12x16feet? -why did the jet hit the only area of the pentagon reinforced to protect against bomb attacks? -why did the FBI confiscate surveillance video from a gas-station across the street and only release 5 still images of the 'attack' - none of which show a plane. 2) Hijackers: -why are many of the 19 hijackers (i believe 6 of them) still alive in their home countries? is it because their passports were stolen and fake ID used at airports? Okay, then how do we know the imposters were Arab Al-Qaeda members? -how did a passport turn up from the aircraft 2 blocks away from the world trade centres? Did someone throw it out the window as they were about to crash? 3) World Trade Centres: -why does the image of the plane hitting the tower show a clear additional piece on the bottom of the Bombardier that is NOT there in a normal plane? why will Bombardier not comment on what this is citing reasons of "national security"? -why is there a bright flash seen on the towers just to the SIDE of the fuselage before the second plane hits the towers? 4) Crash-landing in pennsylvania: -where did the plane go? wreckage wasn't found - nothing larger than a "phone book" according to those at the scene was there -why do several witnesses report seeing a second plane flying overhead soon after the crash (appeared like a "military plane") and why did the authorities deny having a plane in the area and then later change their mind and say that a passenger flight was brought down to view the area but refused to give details on which passenger flight it was That's just a few that I remember off the top of my head. I personally have no idea what happened but appreciate taking a critical approach when analyzing issues. If anyone has counter-arguments to the video (or the above points) then PLEASE post as I'd love to hear them. There are always multiple sides to a story and it is naive to believe one without hearing the others.
  6. Salam all, Just wondering if anyone is aware of 'Mujtahid al-Husseini of Iran' who was born in 1919. I have a friend who asked if I know who this is but I'm not entirely sure. The mujtahid is still living I believe. He may be considered 'non-orthodox'. Don't know anything else about him. Let me know if any of you do. Jazakallah Raza
  7. Salam, I found the transliteration of the Namaz on duas.org but couldn't find the meaning. I'm referring specifically to the Dua read during Qunoot and what is read before takbir. Below is the transliteration. Jazakallah and Eid Mubarak to all Raza (Source: http://www.duas.org/iddzuha.htm) 3. Recite Takbeer before the Namaz as follows: ALLAHU AKBARU ALLAHU AKBARU LA ILAHA IL ALLAHU WAL LAHU AKBARU ALLAHU AKBARU WA LILLAHIL HAMD ALLAHU AKBARU ALA MA HADANA WALLAHUSH SHUKRU ALA MA AULAANA 3. Recite "ALLAHU AKBAR" and then recite the following Dua-e-Qanoot with hands raised in the sky and the palms joint together: ALLA HUMMA AHLAL KIBRIYAAI WAL AZAMATI WA AHLAL JOODI WAL JABAROOT WA AHLAL AFWI WAR RAHMATI WA AHLAT TAQWAA WAL MAGHFIRAH AS-ALUKA BIHAQQI HAAZAL YAWMIL LAZI JA-ALTAHU LIL MUSLIMEENA EIDAN WA LI MUHAMMADIN SALLALLAAHU ALAYHI WA AALIHEE ZUKHRAN WA SHARAFAN WA KARAMATAN WA MAZEEDAA AN TU SALLI ALA MUHAMMADIN WA AALI MUHAMMAD WA AN TUDKHILANI FEE KULLI KHAYRIN ADKHALTA FEEHI MUHAMMADAN WA AALI MUHAMMAD WA AN TUKHRIJANI MIN KULLI SOOO-IN AKHRAJTA MINHU MUHAMMADAN WA AALI MUHAMMAD SALAWAATUKA ALAYHI WA ALAYHIM ALLAAHUMMA INNEE AS-ALUKA KHAYRA MAA SA-ALUKA BIHI IBAADUKAS SAALIHOON WA A-OOZUBEKA MIMMAS TA-AAZA MINHU IBAADUKAL MUKHLISOON
  8. I've heard a bit about this show and know that the Boraq character tends to act "stupid" on purpose (to get laughs)... He probably (altho u never know) didn't mean what he said about bush etc but i'm sure it'll bring in a lot of laughs when shown on the show (again, not that this is a good thing - but bottom line is ratings for these guys right?)
  9. salam I put a thread up here a few days ago (I think on Dec 20th) regarding a search I was doing for Muslim charitable organizations. I think it was probably moved to another forum - anyone know where? Just wanted to see if it's had any responses. Jazakallah for your help Raza
  10. Salam, I'm not sure exactly which forum to put this post in so feel free to move it to a more appropriate one moderators. I'm looking for Muslim charities that are reputable and government-recognized to make donations. The Students for World Justice committee (subsidiary of MSA) is looking to host an event and we want to find a good place to donate to. Preferences for the charities: 1. Cater to children (or you can ask them to donate the money to children) 2. Are Muslim-based charities If you know any good ones that fit either (or both) of the criteria above please post a link to their website or a phone number/info. Wasalam, Raza PS. We're in Toronto, Canada so if the place has an office nearby, all the better.
  11. Does anyone know if English translations (just the text - not recitations) are available for any of the Latmiyat? jazakallah.
  12. Salam everyone, The Thaqalayn Muslim Association (a Shia student group active in several southern Ontario universities) is hosting an event on The Quran and Tolerance. ALL are encouraged to attend! Please see the attached flyer. ***** MAJESTY OF THE QURAN -- The Quran on Tolerance -- Speaker: Dr. Husein Khimjee Date: Wednesday November 10th Time: 4-5pm Location: Sidney Smith - SS 1088 (University of Toronto - St George Campus) info@stgeorge.thaqalayn.org *****
  13. I think she's talking about www.duas.org - not a book.
  14. Salam Alaikum, I was just wondering if anyone had any reliable websites where I can read up on the significance and effect of reading specific duas. Which duas? I don't know - any really. Basically I'm looking for a site that will say: Dua Iftitah - Assists in xyz. Also, if there are sites that discuss when/where/how a dua came into being (ie/ which Imam, etc recommended it and why) Just that type of info... I have looked at www.duas.org (which is a great site for dua) but it doesn't have anything about the significance of the duas... I also looked on al-islam.org but couldn't find anything. Please let me know if you know any sites (or books). Jazakallah, Raza
