  1. Is this something you need to sign up for? Or is it open for everyone?
  2. What is wrong with holding your own wife's hand, especially if you live in a westernized society? Your five year old daughter will undoubtedly see much worse from others. Wouldn't you rather her see her parents show love and affection towards each other then from two random teenagers she sees in the park? We are talking about holding hands, nothing more. There are little children who hold hands with each other for goodness sake!
  3. ! (salam) My name is Mariam and I'm from Indiana but both my parents are from Baghdad, Iraq. I am currently studying psychology with a concentration in behavioral neuroscience. I've been a member for some time now but haven't posted much since then.....I think that's about it ^_^
  4. I've gotten an email saying that they were stuck somewhere and needed money for a kidney transplant. I replied back saying that I would love to donate one of my own kidneys instead of actually giving them the money. I didn't get a reply back :(
  5. I personally wouldn't have it in me to tell anyone that I'd rather them give me money, but I don't think it's greedy at all if someone told me what they preferred. I really don't want to spend money on something that they either won't like or don't need...that to me sounds like a waste of money for myself and a waste of space for the people who are receiving the gift. And aren't gift regestries the same thing as asking for money? Every item on the list is priced differently. Some around $15 and some items go up to a couple hundred. You pick an item that you can afford and that's it. You giving them money is just giving them the option of buying what they need the most.
  6. Even though these weddings are way over the top and ridiculous I do like the idea of the "no gifted box." My brother had a very small wedding at a friends house, but him and his wife were a lot happier to get $10 from one person, then a $10 toaster they didn't need from somebody else. I don't think the couple cares how much your giving them because everyone has their own circumstance, it's always the thought that counts. :)
  7. I've heard people tell females that they look "sick" on days that they happen to not be wearing make-up. Psychologically men are more attracted to women who are healthy looking, not necessarily more beautiful. So maybe females wear make-up to look more presentable, which leads to male attraction(intentional or not), which makes other women want to compete with them and ending with them "worrying" about how they look compared to others.
  8. A picture I took in Baghdad, Iraq back in 2011.
  9. Is it just me or are the links not working on this website? I tried looking under both Academics & Admissions and none of the pages are loading.
  10. Purda Pillow! It's basically biryani in a crunchy bread crust, or an Iraqi version of chicken pot pie :) (Excuse the indian samosa, I didn't make that)
  11. Salam, The Zainabia Community Center is at 4444 W. 56th Street. Indianapolis, IN 46254. The one on Gateway Dr. has been closed for a while now since the new building was built. They usually have Dua Kumayl every Thursday night and Sunday school for the kids each week. Don't know which you prefer but there are programs in Arabic, Urdu and English. Unfortunately, they never update the website because of the facebook page and listserv that they have. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Zainabia-Community-Center-Indianapolis-IN/111931283936?ref=ts&fref=ts I think there are a group of Shias that get together at each others houses in Terra Haute but I'm not really sure when and where they meet up. Hope this helps.
  12. I'm not sure how true this is but this is what they said on their official website: "Rumors that Starbucks Coffee Company and its management support Israel are unequivocally false. Starbucks is a publicly traded company with stores in 49 countries. Though our thousands of partners (employees) and business associates around the globe have diverse views and share many beliefs about a wide range of topics, our primary focus remains to deliver the best customer experience possible. Starbucks is a non-political organization and does not support political causes. Further, the political preferences of a Starbucks partner at any level have absolutely no bearing on Starbucks company policies." Press Release
  13. There are rude people in every country in this world and I think we shouldn't generalise because of a few incidents. And I also think that moving away from the problem isn't the solution. We should teach those who don't understand us about who we are and what we believe. Personally, I have had some rude comments about being a Muslim female, but I have also had some very sincere and kind ones as well. Allahu Alim...
  14. Does he give any reason as to why he worships the "sun god"? I think before you try to refute his beliefs you should try to understand why he believes what he does, and try to get more information from his point of view. I think then it would be easier to refute his beliefs.
