Hassan kachal got a reaction from CLynn in Jizya and zakat
If jizya was lower than zakat, why did certain kaliphs discourage conversion to Islam in order to collect jizya? Wouldnt it have been financially better to encourage conversion so as to take a higher rate? Makes no sense to me.
Also was the jizya and the zakat designated to be used differently? Ie the zakat for the poor and the jizya for defense etc?

I have read this before on a nasibi web site. This copy and paste job is as bad as I have ever seen them.
Like Brother P.Ease says you underestimate your readership. We are not idiots.
As for secular Iranians becoming sunnis I know one guy at my uni who did that but so what? He hardly went from shi'ism to sunism. He went from kufr to sunni.
For some it is an act of rebellion against the IRI, whilst also still retaining their islam. For others they genuinly like sunnism. But please dont try to pass this off as some type of indicator of a shift in Iranian Muslims from truth to cover ups.

Where did you read that?
And it may refer to the syrian baath party, who were a completely different kettle of fish to the iraqi scum who went by that name. Only arab country to support Iran in the Holy Defence, and they cut off relations with Saddam (la) from 1982 on.
Sunni-shia doesnt come into it. Many iraqi baathis were 'shia'.

Good post, And this is essentially the point.
All those who posted about how great things are mainly focused on things like scientific and technological advances, which are no doubt important. Yet there's been no mention of morality, and it is on that front that mankind is seriously at a loss.

The problem is that with religious organisations there is already a level of trust that people will have. Which is why people become disappointed when that trust is abused.
