People who use this argument to justify their bigotry towards Islam or any religion for that matter due to it having present relevance,
"You don't see any other religion such as Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism, Sikhism, Christianity, Judaism etc etc who are committing acts of terrorism on the news/media. Islam = Terrorism due to current events. Do you see them other religions endorsing acts of terrorism like Islam? Therefore, Islam is the worst religion out of all religions".
Let me see if I can word this differently but still delivering the same message,
"Sure most other religions have their rules on treating disbelievers unequally, but what about Islam with its violent verses in the Quran about disbelievers? At least Christians have reformed nowadays and are no longer doing acts of Crusades due to this reformation, but what about Islam and its followers? At least Judaism is no longer a threat and are not following their scriptures to enslave Goyims/Gentiles, but what about Islam and its followers who are still following their un-reformed scripture? At least you don't see other religions killing disbelievers because of their disbelief, but what about Islam with its millions of followers who all share the same agenda to see Western Nations crumble by their acts of spreading terrorism into the hearts of innocents just like Muhammad and his Followers did on their 80 battles 14 centuries ago? Therefore, Islam is the worst religion out of all religions".
Comparing the two lines of reasoning you can see they are both logically similar but in a different light. It's called 'Whataboutism' and to quote John Oliver from Last Week Tonight,
"This technique on saying What About is actually an Old Soviet Propaganda Tool. And the reason its dangerous is that all actions regardless of context share a moral equivalency. And since nobody's perfect, all criticism is hypocritical and everybody should do whatever they want. It is a depressingly effective tool."
The problem with Whataboutism is that it doesn't solve a problem, help the debate keep going or even win the argument. The point of Whataboutism is to make an issue/situation unnecessarily complicated and less clear which can make the other side frustrated. So, Whataboutism is essentially debating in order to troll your opponents. You're not debating to put forth opposing arguments and finding some truth within it. You're doing it to troll people.
No wonder Donald Trump is using this tactic, he's trolling the media along with Humanity on a global scale.
Bottom line, some Westerners should stop using their Whataboutisms against Islam and actually do some research based on whether the religion really is "The Way of Life" that all Human Beings should adhere to.
