To Whom it may concern:
Those who are blessed with sons & daughters, please look at these words....
If we are true servant of "Ar-Rehman", we have to be merciful, kind, careful, loving, polite while dealing with parents, kids, husband/wives or any other relatives and neighbors. This happens when we forget the presence of Allah (s.w.t), and forget who we are.
"And among men is he who serves Allah (standing) on the verge, so that if good befalls him he is satisfied therewith, but if a trial afflict him he turns back headlong; he loses this world as well as the hereafter; that is a manifest loss" (22:11)
I am glad that you are guided by this verse of Quran. These words of Allah (s.w.t) are more specific for those who are blessed with kids because one of the "fitnah" as mentioned in Quran are children. So parents must exercise precaution in dealing with their children. Allah says in Quran:
"And know that your property and your children are a temptation, and that Allah is He with Whom there is a mighty reward" (8:28)
"Your possessions and your children are only a trial, and Allah it is with Whom is a great reward" (64:15)
You have committed a mistake, but you're alive Alhamdolillah. You have the time & resources to repent on your mistakes which you have committed knowingly or unknowingly. Know what Allah says:
"Say: O my servants! who have acted extravagantly against their souls, do not despair of the mercy of Allah; surely Allah forgives the faults altogether; surely He is the Forgiving the Merciful" (39:53)

A few years.
You can see the same phrase in the following verse too:
Surah Yusuf, Verse 42:
And he said to him whom he knew would be delivered of the two: Remember me with your lord; but the Shaitan caused him to forget mentioning (it) to his lord, so he remained in the prison a few years.
