I know that such things are hard to believe; but isn't it also believe that God created us out of 'nothing'? Isn't it hard to believe that a man was swallowed by a whale and lived for a long duration there? Or that a man's spirit was raised to the heavens and his body became that of his betrayer? Or that the River Nile parted? God only knows the truth, which is 'often stranger than fiction'. Regarding Imam Ali, we can at least be sure that he was an unparalleled warrior of his time.

We must resist the temptation to correlate Muslims and their progress/evolution to that of what the Christians experienced. This is the same trend and matching Shias and Catholics and Sunnis and Protestants, and it doesn't make much sense. There may be similarities, but there are certainly many more differences. We are not Christians and we must do what is right as per our own sources and situations.

Your question, and your implied expectation, was unreasonable. The reason is because in the early history of Islam, and much of the later history; Shias were rarely in a position to fight non-Muslim invaders. Their numbers were small and the oppression they had to deal with from Sunni ulama/kings was also very severe. Also, under the Shia concept of justice, the Sunni rulers were nothing but illegitimate oppressors, officially Muslim in this dunya, but not deserving of respect. Choosing between them and, for example, invading Mongols was a tough choice.
